Anyone Use A 5'6" Rod?
You need to talk to Grampa1114. He has two that are like wet noodles, one ultralight. But, he sure catches fish with them. A two or three pound bass bends them double, but he has no trouble getting them to the boat. He's got me into fishing 1/16 ounce jigheads with various baits. So, I just got a six foot light Browning, Saros 1000, spooled with four pound InvisX. At his suggestion, I'll load the extra spool with six pound InvisX. I'm so used to 6.5 foot rods I got the six foot Browning. The 5.5 felt a bit small. Nonetheless, Grampa does very, very well with his 5.5 St Croix.

Tennis On Tv
Let's consider. To attend a sporting event, you have to contend with traffic, parking, the travel costs, the ticket costs, and the ungoshly sum for food (snacks), and beverage. Then, you may have to contend with unruly drunks, and the commercial timeout stoppages in play. I'd rather watch from the comforts of home. Having said that, we do attend two or three NASCAR races per year, beginning with Daytona. But those are getaways, not just for the racing. Funny thing is, All of the major stick and ball sports, and auto racing have better television ratings that fishing, and that includes the biggest tournaments. But, fishing does not lend itself to live coverage broadcasting. It would take way too many cameras to begin to cover it. Too spread out over many square miles. The other sports are contained to small areas. I do enjoy golf and tennis on television.

Why Is Fluoro Preferred For Drop Shotting?
Since you and I see eye to eye on the InvisX, I'll overlook your derogatory comments about senkos. The other thing I like about fluoro is that it does stretch. I tend to fish too fast, and the stretch of the line and the bend of the rod make the action of the bait more subtle when drop shotting.

What Do You Do If You Don't Have A Livewell?
You should not have a problem as long as the water drains. On draggers, they put a layer of ice, a layer of fish, a layer of ice, as needed. On some boats, such as the longline swordfish boats, they make slush ice from seawater. The seawater ice is colder than fresh water ice, so it keeps the fish better. Because it's seawater, the fish don't soak it up.

What Do You Do If You Don't Have A Livewell?
In the case of any saltwater critter, be it fish, lobsters, crabs, scallops or whatever, their flesh will soak up the freshwater and render the meat nearly tasteless and mushy. I remember reading about why saltwater fish do not soak up saltwater, and maybe the same for freshwater fish not soaking up fresh water. I remember it was very interesting, but do not recall the particulars.

Consider yourself lucky. It's been four or five days, and I'm still having problems.

Fishing Jargon
Good for Nike. They don't let public opinion push them around, regardless of its impact. The top honcho also stood by Tiger Woods when that scandal broke. I remember him saying in an interview that the scandal would not be a blip on the radar screen in a year, and that Tiger would be back to dominating the PGA. That has worked out well for Nike. It's an admirable thing for a person to stick to their convictions, but it sure isn't wise for a company that depends on the public to buy their products to deliberately offend others. While a part of me finds political correctness offensive, It's never wise to offend existing and potential customers over controversial language.

What Do You Do If You Don't Have A Livewell?
I'm with the ice in a cooler suggestion. I'll add one more thing. Get a cooler with a drain and leave it open. It might not be a problem with freshwater fish, but it sure ain't good for saltwater fish to sit in icy fresh water. Either way, the cooler with ice is a more practical than a livewell. You don't need all the plumbing, a pump and wiring.

Considering A New Tow Vehicle
The number one consideration for any towing combination should be, does the vehicle have brakes up to the task? If the tow vehicle struggles to haul it, you've got an aggravation. If the tow vehicle lacks adequate braking, you've got a serious problem when you need to stop quickly.

Old Timer
Many of the current sounders will display in the circular flasher mode. However, flashers leave no history trail of the bottom. Depth changes appear instantly on the display in the "chart" view as well. On some, there is a flasher bar at the side of the display. It is nothing more or less than a straight line version of the circular flasher. When ever there is a flash, it is displayed instantly then moves across the screen. The moving display of the bottom is a recording of what you have seen on the flasher. You can see the flasher bar to the right of the screen and the "history" of the flasher which scrolls across the screen. The speed of scrolling is adjustable to suit your preferences. If you don't like the fish icons and depth feature, that can be turned off, and the fish will be seen as arches.

Problems Accessing Forum
That's great. But there's one minor problem. If they (and I was one of the they) cannot access the forum page on the site, they cannot see this fix. There is one other thing that needs to be done along with the "dump". Any bookmark in favorites needs to be deleted. I performed the dump, clicked on favorites and the message popped up. It wasn't until I deleted the favorite, then dumped the dns resolver, then typed bassresource.com into the url bar, opened the home page, then clicked on forums that it finally worked. It was very frustrating. Since the problem only affected the forum page, there needs to be some type of flashing message on the home page regarding this fix. I have no idea how many have experienced this problem without a clue as to how it can be resolved. Another suggestion. A contact feature would be nice. I don't begin to understand computers, but I've never had to "fix" problems with my computer, and this problem affected all three of mine, to access any other forums or web sites. If not for being able to contact Alpster by email, I'd still be wondering what was going on since the "try again later" would never have been successful. Since each of us must provide a valid email address for joining, isn't it possible to send the fix for this problem to all members with the pushing of a few buttons?

Jackass Actor Ryan Dunn Dies In Car Crash
Karma is an interesting topic. I wasn't going to participate in this thread, but the comments about Roger Ebert and karma brings up an interesting possibility. How can you be sure that Ryan Dunn's death in a car crash is not the working of karma? What about John Belushi and the other celebrities who were done in by their lifestyles, or was it karma?

Two Questions...
The marine rule of thumb is three times the depth. But, that is for anchoring in the ocean, large bays, etc. It takes into account strong wind, currents and waves. It also depends on the type of anchor and the type of bottom, as well as the circumstances. In one place I fish, if the wind whips up from the north while I am fishing, I need to use the anchor in the process of getting the boat loaded onto the trailer. There is no place to safely dock or beach the boat while getting the trailer into the water, so I have to use the anchor. I set the anchor about a hundred feet from the beach, and let the wind blow the boat into shallow water where I can then secure it, so the bow faces into the wind. I get off the boat, back the trailer into the water, then get into the boat, pull it to deeper water where I can run the engine and get it lined up with the trailer. I've got a twenty pound river anchor, and it will drag along the bottom without plenty of scope. Keeping the line neatly coiled is not a problem. Once coiled, I use three ball bungee loops to keep the coiled anchor line orderly. I use these things for all sorts of things on the boat and around the house. They work great on extension cords as well, and to secure the cover onto my Humminbird 898 while trailering.

Tundra Owners Please Step Inside...
Air filters are mainly a performance benefit with the computer controlled engines. Years ago, a dirty filter would make an engine run rich because it boosted manifold vacuum and sucked in more gas from the carburetor while getting less air into the engine. Today, sensors measure how much air volume is taken in, and meters the appropriate amount of fuel for optimum efficiency. A K&N or other better flowing filter will enhance performance, but have very little if any affect on fuel mileage. From what I've read on google searches, even K&N only claims better performance while remaining mum about better mileage. Injectors can dramatically affect mileage if they are spitting droplets of fuel rather than injecting a fine mist.

Buying Trailers With Expired Registrations?
I don't know about that. Aren't you concerned that if you are stopped by a cop, or involved in an accident, they may discover it isn't homemade? Sounds to me like you may be opening a nasty can of worms. There aren't many "homemade" trailers that look like name brand boat trailers. If you cannot get a clean title, or an acceptable bill of sale, the trailer is not legally yours, no matter what you call it.

Didn't he share them with you? I've got one spinning rod set up with four pound test. Six pound is ok, but the four is much better.

Whitehall is fine by me, but not the weekend after the Fourth. Wife and I will be away. Any weekend after that should be workable.

I Am Now Retired!!!!!!
On weekends, I fish here. No jet skis, no wakeboarders, hardly any other fishermen. The most boats I have seen on the pond is two or three others. Most of the time, I have it to myself, as it appears in these photos. Best of all, it's five minutes from my front door. And no, the last photo is not a Northern. It's a chain pickerel.

Eastern Mass Get Together?
Let's hear some suggestions for dates and places. I'm flexible as to where and when. Since it will likely be a weekend to accomodate those not yet retired, I'd suggest avoiding anything near Cape Cod. Weekend traffic from July 4 through Labor Day is usually horrendous, and the ponds are clogged with tubers, jet skis, water skiers, joy riders and fishermen. Let's hear some suggestions. Maybe grille some burgers and dogs at noon (or at the end of the outing) and compare notes on the morning's fishing. Anyone with a tailgating grille? I've got room for a non-boater.

Thoughts
If my wife spent three hundred bucks on anyone's jersey, as a gift for me, I'd rush her to a doctor, or more likely, a psychiatrist. But, that's just me. Having said that, those who attended the wine and cheese soire at the Road Trip saw me in an official, worn by a team member, bright yellow Pennzoil, Dale Earnhardt Incorporated shirt from the Steve Park era. We won it at a fund raiser's raffle for one of my customers. It's been in the closet for years, and the Road Trip was the only place I've worn it. That was to be a wise guy, poking fun at Road Warrior and Steve "Big O" Parks (note the "s", not the racer) who always look like they just stepped out of the pages of GQ magazine. Next year, I'll spruce it up with a flags of racing necktie that I got years ago. Maybe a top hat, white gloves, and formal walking stick to round out the ensemble.

Eastern Mass Get Together?
I can make it pretty much anytime. The only exceptions are the weekend around June 18th, and the week following the Fourth of July. Grampa and I talked about it when we fished together last week. We wondered if everyone else lost interest or what. As far as the time, that is up to you working stiffs. The place can be determined by consensus. Let's hear from all who are interested, and we'll go from there.

Eastern Mass Get Together?
OK guys, what happened to all the rah, rah, sis, boom, bah about a bunch of us getting together? Two showed up for the first roundup in April. Is that the end of it?

It's About Time Florida Stepped Up To The Plate!
Why do I smell a lawsuit challenging this "law" by the ACLU? Though I'm wholeheartedly, maybe coldheartedly, in total agreement with the intent of this law, I doubt it will stand.

13Ft V Hull - Making Complete Deck Pros/cons
If you are determined to do it, I'd suggest making your casting deck in the center of the boat. In the type of a boat you posted, there is very little buoyancy at the bow. I had to row a boat like that using a paddle, and standing in the bow, the stern was clear out of the water. I had no choice but to do this since a couple had capsized a small boat and were thrashing in the water. Using my canoe would have been risky, and there was a twelve foot round bottom boat on the shore, so I used it. Before you do anything permanent, put a piece of plywood across the seats, take it out in shallow water, and stand in differen places to see how it handles the weight in various places. Find the most stable spot possible, and put your casting deck in that area. Bass boats are built with casting decks for two reasons. First, you can move around more easily, and second, for what is the most important factor, you can store plenty of gear out of harms way, while it is still readily accessible. I fish from my canoe, and my bass boat. There is a slight advantage casting from a bass boat vs. canoe or other small boat. The tradeoff between decreasing stability and a slight casting advantage is not a good bet.
