  1. When I used flouro I really liked the berkley 100%. It handled great and was plenty strong. That being said. ....I couldn't really find a significant advantage to using it in MY fishing- and I went back to 15# yozuri. *shrug*
  2. Do not buy a kayak and then buy a trolling motor for it. IMO that defeats the entire purpose of a kayak to begin with. If your going to go that route- might as well get a gheenoe and be done with it. Or better yet. .. spend that money on a 101# trolling motor and batteries for your existing bass boat. Demo- ing a kayak in the waters you plan to use it is really the only way to answer this. Find a local kayak forum for your area and ask them about the water you plan to fish. See if any others do it or if they consider it a bad idea. Also see if anyone can take you out on a float trip with one of their spares. If the water you're looking to fish is as swift as you make it out to be. ....you don't want to go out there alone anyway- espicially being a novice.
  3. I've caught lots Spanish mackerel on yo zuri #15 ultra soft. *shrug* Ymmv
  4. Gulp is really good at what it does. That being said. .... if your fishing for inshore fish like you listed, then stop acting like a catfish fisherman ( live/stink bait) and start fishing like a bass fisherman! Lol. A gold 3/8-1/2oz spoon, a topwater of your choice, and a quarter oz jig head with your choice of plastic will catch almost any inshore fish.... IF you put the time into it and FISH. If your going to just drift the flats, throw a popping cork, drink a beer and catch dinner- well. ...invest in berkley/pure fishing because you're going to be feeding alot of gulp to pinfish and catfish.
  5. Yeah. .... I wasn't expecting to catch them in Melbourne ..... I was just hoping to not have to go all the way to Miami- for both time and safety reasons. It appears as though lake osborne is right off a main hwy. Easy to get in and out. I don't know where to even start in Miami or how to get there once I do. It will be me and my fiance in kayaks. Not trying to thread jack here. .... just also interested in areas to catch peacocks this winter.
  6. ? Just go by line diameter and not advertised breaking strength. 12# yozuri breaks just under 20#. You'll get plenty of that on your spool. ...
  7. Acedemy and amazon have them listed at 89-120 bucks respectively. Good deal either way.
  8. I'm interested in this as well as I will be coming down around Xmas to Melbourne and really want to sneak south to catch a peacock. Bucket list and all that. I'm a little nervous though about going all the way to Miami and not knowing the area at all. Was hoping to find some farther north...
  9. It wasn't mislabeled. They just don't gouge people on their fishing stuff. They don't make their main profit off their fishing dept, and so when something has become out of season or out of date. ... they get rid of it. They don't try and get full price for a discontinued model like most places. That being said, they're still a business and are always going to be making a profit. For them to price some of their stuff at 75% off and more- it makes you wonder about what these stores pay wholesale for this stuff. And that train of thought should make you hate Walmart even more. ....
  10. Ha! I LOVE fishing in the fog in my kayak! Topwater is on fire! I sneak up into a cove or creek and try to avoid areas of boat traffic. Some people just want to run their boat- it doesn't matter if they can't see!
  11. I had one in my kayak for inshore fishing. It has handled the environment and abuse admirably. I've caught some pretty monster fish on it and it never has given me a lick of trouble. I've had it a few long years now and the foregrip cork is starting to go. Still 100% functional. Not bad at all for $30. It is a tiny bit heavy though and I recently got another $30 rod- the field and stream inferno- to replace it. ....and it is performing well also! And much lighter!
  12. Yup. 12# yzh on all my cranks- deep and shallow. If I spent more time below 18' .... I'd probably step down to 10# yzh.
  13. They are two separate things to me. I don't find myself using a lure often where weighted or unweighted is a decision I have to make. Like. ... unweighted I'm throwing flukes, floating worms, horny toads, maybe a senko. These baits and presentations are generally an unweighted deal. So while the hook is technically "t-rigged", I don't really consider it an " unweighted t-rig". In my mind a t-rig is a plastic with a bullet sinker rigged weedless and generally fished on the bottom. If I tell you that I caught em on a Texas rigged worm. .... you can bet I'm not talking about say, a paddle tail or speed worm where- its the same rigging set up - but you cast and wind it in. I don't consider that a t-rig. That's how my mind classifies it- right or wrong- so I have to say weighted .....always.
  14. Jfr - I went out and threw a spook all day yesterday and caught multiple species of salt fish- lady fish, jack crevelle and my full limit of spotted sea trout including this over slot 25" sow. ... all on that bone spook Jr in the bottom of the pic.
  15. ^ I doubt it was the saltwater. I use a spook over 80% of the time I'm in the saltwater and I have had no finish issues- ever. For that matter, I'm heading to the salt in my kayak this morning and the spook that's tied on is one I have had for about a year and a half. I go inshore fishing about 3-4 times a month. That's alot of salt. And alot of reds and trout that thing has caught!
  16. I don't think its easier at all for me really. In fact, the more I know. .... the less fish I catch. Hahahah. No I think I know more about the locations and conditions I am familiar with, and how to adjust in some situations. But I find that even though I "know" what to do in other scenerios- without actually experiencing them. .....I find that I faulter and don't do as well.
  17. In your specific situation, I would use a t-rig weighted with a very small weight. Like a 1/4oz or smaller tungsten. This will give you enough weight and control to cast and work the lure, but still be light and compact enough not to bury itself in the grass too thick. Either that or just throw a weightless senko and be done with it.
  18. X2. I don't even buy any other color of spook. A bone Jr or one knocker is my #1 producer for inshore fish and my first choice for bass as well. Edit: there are two different. ....actually three different bone colors. I like the bone with silver insert. Then there's regular bone and bone with an orange throat.
  19. X2 on the trokar t130. Also. ....I picked up some vmc flipping hooks on clearence at DSG a few months back and they have performed really well. They may become my "everyday" flipping hooks since they're considerable cheaper than trokars. Ill keep the trokars for tournements.
  20. Glad you're OK! I wear my pfd at all times in my kayak. Even in 80° Saltwater less than a foot deep.
  21. I've caught quite a few fish on it. Decent sized too. I find the bite on it to be super finicky though, and I've never been able to connect the dots on why somedays they will crush it and then other days in similar conditions and exact same areas- nothing. I honestly haven't thrown it in a year or more. ...maybe longer. I had completely forgotten about it! Thanks for reminding me. .....it gave me an idea!
  22. I wish I could talk myself into tungsten Carolina rigging. I know it is superior to lead in every way. Except price. And I lose a fair amount of c-rigs each year! Hmmmmm Decisions. ..
  23. I agree with all the advice above and I will also vouch for the convergence ( sort of) I have three convergence rods that I have had for many years. One was passed down to me. They are great sticks. I use one as my redfish rod and it has never even hinted at letting me down- even in the saltwater- in a kayak! That being said. ....all of mine are over 5years old or much older. ...so i can't SPECIFICALLY speak about the one you're looking at in the store. I will say that price seems a bit steep. Again. ..I haven't bought one or even looked at a new one in a while- but when I bought my last convergence- it was $89. It is typically under the clarus price wise.
  24. No need for a stringer through the gills or a hole through the lip. Buy one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002L96JG2?pc_redir=1411889889&robot_redir=1 And stop needlessly harming your fish. Once its clamped on their mouth- trust me. ....its not coming off. I've tied 4ft sharks to my kayak with one of these. Need to weigh a fish? Clamp this on and put the weigh hook through the lanyard. Want to keep them in the water while you get your camera ready? Clamp them on and tie them off to the boat. ....they can swim around freely while you get your poo together. You can handle the fish without actually HANDLING the fish if you want to. Also come in super handy for things you don't WANT to handle- catfish, bowfin, pickerel. ..etc. They're cheap. They're reliable. They float. No excuses.
  25. Agreed. If you're having troubles with the weightless senko- put on a light bullet weight and a trick worm or ribbontail worm of your choice. Having the weight on there makes knowing what's going on ALOT easier. Fwiw- I haven't thrown a senko in years. I have three boxes of them collecting dust. Lol. All I ever seemed to catch on them was dinks, and I got bored to tears waiting on a weightless one to fall. They're pretty good on c-rigs and dropshots
