Ive never used a cork handled graphite ugly stick before, and to be honest wasn't even aware they made them. I think this thread illustrates the point of Bass Resource, there is an incredible amount of knowledge and experience on this site. Its fantastic that a group of people who are by their very nature competitive, are willing to lend advice to others.

This is a fairly common problem with braid line beginers. You must use mono backing on the spool because the braid is so slippery.

Ok, forget the ugly stick, I thought you wanted to spend less than 100. Check out some of the browning combos, or a Pflueger reel, bps rod combo. Thay will find something decent in your price range.

I would recomend an Ugly Stick, they're inexpensive, tough, and will last forever. They are not however, known for their sensitivity.

I dont view it as confrontational at all. I looked up the record by the fish name "white amur". I would post the link, but I found it on a commercial site and did not want to violate the rules. I know they get up to 100 lbs, but everything is smaller here in Illinois.LOL!

Here in Illinois, guys legaly bowfish for them. The state record is 47-3.
