  1. Using the 7'ft medium reaction cara, am I going to be undergunned if I choose to throw a DT16? I guess what I am asking is how deep, and how large can I go using this rod? Thanks. Jake
  2. Some of my favorites are the Rapala Skitter walk, Heddon Torpedo and zara spook. The zara spook comes in several sizes, some with a single knocker, some with multiple and some with none. I believe this allows be to be more versatile. Topwater is my favorite way to fish so I like having options like this.
  3. Im about to buy several Cara T7's for various techniques and I'm stuck on what would be best for cranking. I'm not looking for a "do-all" crank rod, rather something to throw shallow to medium depth runners with. I'm torn between the 7'med reaction Cara which is a die hard crankin rod, or their AOY Cara casting rod which is a 6'8mh/mf. I really like the split grip of the 6'8 but I'm wandering if the moderate fast tip will be too much and I should opt for the reaction series for my cranking. I plan on getting at least one of the former for walking topwaters, and like I said maybe a second to take care of most of my cranking. I appreciate any advice yall might have. Thanks, Jake
  4. Hey guys, both of these rods are comparably priced but I havent used either. Im looking to pick up several and either series have what Im looking for as far as length, power and action for several techniques. My only gripe about the Bucoo is that the handles aren't made of cork, and to date my All Stars haven't let me down. Im open to opinions and suggestions on either of these two sets of rods and I appreciate any help. I plan to pair around 4-5 of them with some Curado E5 and E7's and see how that does. Regards, Jake
  5. How does the E5 version do for larger, deeper diving crank baits? They have some great deals on ebay for these reels and Im just curious if they are stout enough.
  6. Hey guys, I am looking for a set of the FLW rain gear, parka and bibbs. For the life of me, I cant find any. I dont have any color preferences but Im looking for a size large. Id really appreciate any advice. These seem like a good deal as opposed to the bass pro geat that I plan to buy if I cant find any of these. Thanks for any help.
  7. Thanks to both RW and BigRick. Hey Rick, do you just prefer a faster tip on all of your rods? Or do those simply run a little softer? Thanks again.
  8. X2 on everything. Its a lot easier to learn on something that works right. After you have made your investment, tie on a medium-heavy wieghted lure and set the breaks on a higher setting. When you feel more comforable, reduce the lure weight and break setting. It just takes time. Jake
  9. RW, For spinner baits, shallow cranks, and topwater, why do you prefer a faster gear ratio? And by fast do you mean a 6:1 or 7:1? Is it a personal preference thing?
  10. Over the holidays, Im lookin to add several more technique-specific set-ups to get ready for a busy spring. Im not necessarilly looking for a specific brand but feel free to throw that in as well. Heres what Im looking for. Spinnerbait Shallow-Medium Cranks Deeper Cranks Topwater Flippin/pitchin/frog Id really appreciate it if someone would tell me what power and action they prefer for each of these setups and if you prefer a slower, medium, or faster gear ratio. Right now I have a medium/x fast rod and Im not exactly sure as to what it is best suited for either. If anyone could shed a little light on what your preferences are for any of this and why I would greatly appreciate it.
  11. Hey guys, I live in southern tennessee and fish the elk and surrounding creeks fairly regularly. Just recently I have started throwing jigs because the the YUM craw bugs just dont last that long with how fast and hard these fish hit. I picked up some strike king bitsy bug jigs today at gandermountain. I started with watermellon, green pumpkin, black/blue and a crawdad brown in 1/16th and 1/8th ozs. Im looking for some opinions on what jigs yall use for river creek smallies and what size/color they might be. Ive been using netbait pacachunks and crawpappis for trailers and they seem to be working ok. But the trailer does seem to be very important in triggering strikes. have I started out on the right track? Im hoping to hook up on a few here this afternoon and let the fish tell me how they work. But any help would be appreciated. Jake
  12. My dad has a pair of the Black Max combos. He doesnt use them often I dont think. But I think you have the right idea. It is an inexpensive way to introduce yourself to baitcsting. However I think you will find yourself wanting to upgrade fairly soon. For around 60 bucks out the door its not a bad deal I just think you will find its more or less a functioning piece of plastic.
  13. The Curado is an excellent reel. However, after having used the Chronarch for the last 6 months all I can say is that it is a dream. The Curado leaves little to be desired and the Chronarch even less. If you find a deal grab one..or two...
  14. There has been some great advice given here and I plan to use some of it myself. However, on the creeks I fish you cant beat the YUM Craw Bug. If fishing meant surviving it is the one lure I would tie on. Hope this helps.
  15. Thanks I appreciate the good info. I have an All Star M/XF and its a little too stiff for what I want. Ill be looking for one of those Avids to go on sale for sure.
  16. Wow, they are rally pushing Vicious down south and especially in Alabama. I thought about trying some after my experience with Vanish. Maybe ill look elsewhere
  17. Alright well more specifically, what power/action do you prefer for crankbaits spinnerbaits and topwater?
  18. Hey guys, I am looking to add another set up to my arsenal. I am in dire need of a crank/spinnerbait rod. All of my other setups have far too stiff of a tip and it is beating me to death. Im looking to add a topwater rod as well. So tell me this. Can one rod cover both techniques? Either way, I'm looking for some reccomendations or info on what you use or are thinking about getting yourself for around 150. I appreciate all your help.
  19. Im not even close to Ohio, but I have my best luck with Yum 2.5 inch CrawBugs rigged weedless with a 1/8th oz. jighead. They rarely hit like largemouth and usually hit it on the fall or as the current brings it to them. I usually cast it up river/stream 10-15 feet of a piece of structure and as it falls they just pick it up and run. I rarely ever "feel" the strike but its evident when your line is making its way across the water.
  20. I catch a lot of bass that look like that when they are on their beds. I think that is the cause.
  21. We call those red eye down south. They dont get big but are great eating.
  22. rickyterry, do you have any advice/tips as what to fish with at Tim's?
  23. Thanks for the advice about the jigs ^^. Ive been reading and trying to find some recent reports on the lake. I'm still undecided on my line choice but I will have to give the Ultra Soft a try once I can get my hands on some. Ive heard way too many good things about it on this site and others to ignore. Not a bad price tag either. Jake
  24. Whoa..I wish I could find that deal ^^^. I was at Gander Mountain today in Huntsville and was specifically looking for the Ultra Soft and wasnt able to find any.
