ACTUAL bad experiences with quantum reels
A few years ago I had a Quantum Accurist and I would say that It lasted a little over a year. Out of the box it was butter smooth. After that year had passed though the drag system completely failed as did the braking mechanism. Im not going to bash them because of it because i didn't invest 200 dollars in the reel like I do now. I more than got my moneys worth in my opinion. But for longevity I fish Shimano.

Shimano Reels
As the numbers get higher so does the spool capacity and consequently so does the entire reel. All "D" models are from 2008 while the "E" models are 2009. If I have missed something someone correct me. Hope this helps. Jake

Line
Hey guys, this weekend will be my first chance to get out on the water for the year and the first time I get to use my a few of my new toys . I haven't spooled my stradic with any line yet so my question is this: what suggestions to you have about line for smallmouth fishing? I plan on mainly using some Yum Crawbugs and small jigs. As for the water, its Tim's Ford in Winchester Tennessee. Very deep, occasional gravel bars, not too clear. Most of my success in the past has been around docks. So if you have any suggestions Id appreciate it. Jake

alabama.
Huntsville here. Ive fished Guntersville, Logan Martin, Decatur, the list goes on. The fisheries here are simply fantastic as is the weather for most of the year. WAR EAGLE!!

Spinning rod for frogs?
A medium heavy rod with a fast action is the bare minimum in my opinion. Also, a reel with a high/hyper gear ratio comes in handy. Because of this I would seriously consider baticasting gear for frogs. As lunkerfever said, you are going to end up with more fish in the boat.

Baitcasting soft plastics?
kickbasskid, 95% of my jigging/worming I do with baitcasting equipment. The exception being when there is a need for more of a finesse approach or when fishing lures 1/4 oz. and under. This is just my personal preference. As for the rod, I would go with a 7' medium heavy action with a fast tip. Possibly even extra fast. I would suggest taking your Citica with you to wherever you are considering purchasing your rod (or any nearby store if you buy online) and mating it with a few rods and see what balances and feels best to you. Daiwa Advantage153hsta or Quantum energy pt?
Congrats on the new reel. I hope it brings you tight lines for years to come 8-). And yes this is a great forum.

Daiwa Advantage153hsta or Quantum energy pt?
BassBandit35, In the past I have fished with many quantum reels. Just not the particular Quantum he was referring to. And yes, they ALL tore up. I have never owned a Daiwa but I have fished with them many times. Like I said I have many friends who own them. I was honest to say that I own neither but I have fished extensively with products from both companies as many of my friends use them. So yes I do know what I am talking about. I couldn't care less what someone else says about a product if it works for me personally. I dont just go on what other people say. Hence the comment I made about fishing what you have confidence in. RW I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that Jaheff might have a preference on one of these two reels even though he asked for advice on them. Sometimes I like to know what others think even when I have my own ideas. Thats all that comment was meant to convey.

Daiwa Advantage153hsta or Quantum energy pt?
I have neither so take this for what it is worth. Daiwa all the way. I have several buddies who fish seriously and they swear buy them. Every Daiwa I have ever picked up felt solid, well built and Quantums just dont. Of all the reels out there today Quantum's seem to have more problems than any others. I keep hearing that they have done a lot in the way of quality control but I havent fished any of their products recently . I seriously considered Daiwas before going back to Shimano. Fish what you have confidence in and let what everyone else says just fade away. Jake

Stradic $?
I just paid full price for one and have no regrets. For 40 bucks cheaper I would get two ;D. Cant go wrong with the Stradic. And as was already said the FI is the new model.

Good, cheap baitcaster?
underwraps1, There is a fine line between good and cheap and its awful hard to walk it. If you have the mindset that 80-100$ is still acceptable then you will have a much easier time. I invite you to look at the Shimano Citica. They can be almost stolen on eBay. All this is just my opinion. Many will argue that there are reels whose price is much less than what I have just quoted while not suffering quality. So please take this as advice only and just one mans opinion but I would have to disagree with them. Having the "problem" of picking out a new reel is a great one to have so good luck Jake

How far south?
We've got some great smallie fishing at Tim's Ford in southern Tennessee. I realize they can be found even further south but that is the southern most place where I personally have had good success.

New Year, New Reel ...
Generally when I use spinning tackle for bass fishing I'm fishing light jigs and t-rigged plastics. Also great for jerk/slash baits IMO. The power and action of the rod will determine more specifically its purpose but as a general rule spinning tackle is used for lighter lures for more finesse type purposes. Hope this helps.

Chronarch B vs. Curado E5
No experience with the 50MG but it is usually spoken of in the same breath as the Chronarch which speaks for itself. Short of handling them in the store I haven't had much experience with the e5 however I just purchased the Chronarch B and everything I like about the Curado I like even better about the Chronarch. For the price I think you get more with a 50MG/Chronarch. However the quality of the Curados has increases dramatically and even into the realm of past Chronarchs. Its impossible to make a bad decision either way.

Which Pole to Buy?
x3 on the lightening. Great price, great rod.
-
Your favorite reel brand
I remember when i was 12 or so I got a Curado and a Spirex. My dad got for himself a Quantum (cant rmember the exact one). At that time the thought of "taking care" of reels was a foreign idea to me. Nearly 7 years later the Quantum is long gone, the Spirex was given to a friend, and I just put the Curado on yet another rod ( cant seem to find a rod that will keep up with it ). Ive never fished with anything but Shimano, just got two more, and I probably never will buy any other brand. Whats most important to me is that when Im on the water, Im fishing with what I have confidence in.

Bass Pro Shops.........are you kidding me?
Ive noticed that on a lot of gear especially anything fishing. Im sorry but the BPS name doesn't justify throwing money just to say that your bought it from bass pro
-
which would you use
Here in the south where I normally fish I would say that its a toss up between a jig or a deep diving crank/rattle trap. I know I combined two of your choices but the two are similar I am a fan of noise. Jake

Scored a Daiwa Sol for $159 Tonight
Those are some great deals on both reels. It pays to shop around and keep track of whose sells what for how much. It sure paid off for you. Congrats

New here quick question about spinning rod/reel upgrade
For fishing small ponds and for the lure sizes you mentioned a medium action will suit you just fine. A medium heavy wouldn't be overkill especially if you decide to start throwing bigger, heavier lures. However, that is better suited to baitcasting setups. I don't have any personal experience with Carrot Stix but I know a lot of guys who love them. A 7'M would be an excellent choice. Just a few days ago I purchased an All star 845STR and paired it with a Stradic2500. The rod is a 7'M with a fast tip. For light t-rigs, light jigs and maybe some small spinners and cranking M/F is the way to go IMHO. I know the Stradic was already mentioned along with the Symetre. Both are great reels and you can find them for well under retail on ebay and still be under your spending mark depending on what rod you go with. Im still figuring a lot out for myself but I hope this helps.

2009 Bass Pro Shops catalog is here!!!
I got mine just a few days ago. I was surprised to see that the Chronarch D didnt make it in there. Great stuff though. Its already been read over cover to cover too many times to mention.

What new rod and/or reel did you get for Christmas??
3 All Stars. The 846C, 845MC, and the 845STR. I paired two of them with a Chronarch 100B and a Stradic 2500FI. Couldn't be happier
