  1. Mirrorlure update. After reading the opening I post I got hot to throw a twitchbait the last 2 mornings, water conditions were good for that bait, caught fish from both beach and ICW before and after sunrise. These baits can be working a few ways, I like working them on the slow side, subsurface and I don't twitch hard I kinda pull thebait with forearm movements and just reel up slack on my spinning gear, in essence I work it very similar to a slow topbait. These are real productive lures, but there is a time and place for them. I don't have much vegetation in my ponds this year so I'm going to toss one for bass this afternoon, I'm optimistic.
  2. I'm not against live bait, except for me when fishing freshwater or inshore fishing. I've used it and frankly it isn't as much fun for me, the strikes aren't as vicious and time in and time out I've caught fish much faster, often times much bigger. Only my opinion but I find both freshwater and inshore fishing so similar ( similar in regards to equipment, lures, and techniques) that I lump them into one category. A bass fisherman could easily catch inshore species and an inshore fisherman could do the same with bass, I fish both venues nearly everyday and do it pretty much the same way. I'm a sight caster, at least that's my preferred method, I'll walk the beach sometimes for a mile or 2 and then back again and maybe make a cast only every 50 or 75 yds, I'm looking for bait, fins, birds, I don't like casting into empty water. I do much of the same when walking the canals or ponds for bass. Bait is not conducive for fishing this way. When it comes to catching good sized fish, I guess I do alright at it.
  3. I use a limited number of lures, spoons etc for fresh and saltwater, when I lose something I just fill in. No carries DOA 5 1/s jerk shads around here so I do order them right from DOA. My favorite jerkbait is no longer being made, I've caught more bass on it than any other, not even a close contest. I have 2 left and I'm ticked...........and it only cost $2.99. The word I inserted was a bit more graphic than ticked..........lol
  4. I can say the same thing about mono, only use it when I'm forced to. I'm braid all the way for me and I'm not real fussy on the brand, like Grey Wolf I like to buy it on sale. I use PP and fins, 10, 15 and 20#, I did spool up 2 ocean offshore spinning outfits with 30# PP not long ago.
  5. I've had charges on my credit cards several times, nothing more than 3 or $400. Bank of America clears those up within 24 hours, other banks have taken 4-6 weeks. We did have a few cards stolen on vacation about 15 years ago, charged up quite a bit of money, that took well over six months to get corrected. I have never been charged anything by the banks, so it would up being hassle without any monetary loss.
  6. @ Chris, Back in the 70 & 80's I was into photography pretty serious, both taking pictures and my own darkroom work. My specialty was sports, mainly boxing, this was the era of the Kronk gym in Detroit. One of my good friends is Jackie Kallen, she was a spots writer, then turned boxing manager ( she managed James Toney to a World Championship), she put in touch with people to get press credentials and I attended many fights included World Championship bouts with the like of Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, and Milton McCrory. Was on the apron of the ring doing my thing, I had quite a few published in Detroit local newspapers. I did my fair share of portrait, wildlife and scenery. One day my trusty Canon FTB broke down, instead of buying another match needle camera I bought a Canon A-1 automatic ( pre digital) and hated it, I was so much faster by feel with match needle than I was in manual mode with an automatic, seeing all those numbers in the view finder was distracting to me. Long story short, I got disinterested and didn't do much with my camera after that. I understand what you say about other people not knowing how to frame a picture. Being on foot most of the time a camera mounted on a tripod doesn't work for me, I may walk the beach for a mile or more casting as I walk. I'm never in one spot for more than a minute or 2. Having a smartphone with me works best, but it's very limiting, I have 1 fairly small canon digital which isn't too bad carry around, but the tripod is a no go for me. I did notice on one of your photos that you used a Fuji Fine Pix 7000( now how did I know that, lol ), I have that camera also, it does take super pictures. That's what I use for my vacations and outings when I'm just walking around with a camera over my shoulder and not fishing.
  7. Only time my fish get measured or weighed is if some else is around with a scale or tape. I estimate the length with my shoe, 2 shoes I've got a 23" fish which is somewhere around 7#, close enough for me.
  8. Everything is personal choice. For me it's spinning only with braid and I would use a swivel, leader and and a duolock. I do not change my leaders too often, and I fish everyday. I can change lures quick and I do not worry my leader getting too short. Don't over think it.
  9. Just about any knot tied properly will hold well, becomes personal choice. My criteria is pretty simple, if the knots hold with offshore fish, they will hold for inshore and freshwater.
  10. I have not used that model but I use both suspending and floating twitchbaits and the poppa dog is my favorite topwater lure. I've caught many fish on them including freshwater LMB. My suggestion ( my feeling with any lure, is not to overwork them), slight twitches and a fairly slow retrieve. I like them best in calmer water situations, not current or big surf, excellent bait with a good set of hooks on them. Below is a Jack Crevelle with a mirrorlure twitchbait.
  11. I've been in well over 50 dress parades, funeral marches ( President Kennedy ), and drill team competitions. Our uniforms, brass and shoes had to be near perfect, if not I could be spending an hour doing elbows and toes or duck walking with my m-1 at high port. For the record this was not the military but a military school, where military science and physical training were of high priority.
  12. Of course it's debatable that's why I said "may have been avoided." If a search is done there may be a possibility of discovery, simply put " an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
  13. I use both PP and Fins braid, both work quite well for me. When it comes to bass fishing I don't set the too hook hard, braided lines don't break on me. I don't know what the pulling power of 7# bass is ( your PB), is it more than 30#? If yes use stronger line or use your drag wisely, if no then a lighter line should be sufficient. Both inshore and offshore fishing the majority of the fish slam hard enough to hook themselves, swinging for the fences is not necessary. Knowing how to use your drag and letting fish take line will land more fish than trying to muscle them in, too tight a drag can result in line breakage.
  14. The Jeopardy Question No One Could Answer ARLINGTON CEMETERY Question: "How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknown Soldier 1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why? 21 steps: It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary. 2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why? 21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1 3. Why are his gloves wet? His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle. 4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and, if not, why not? He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder. 5. How often are the guards changed? Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. 6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to? For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30. They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin. The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery . A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe Lewis {the boxer} Medal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WWII and of Hollywood fame. Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.. In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington , DC , our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir!" Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson. The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
  15. I see no problem in searching the businesses, the President of the United States is the #1 head of state in the world. Had the businesses in Dallas, including the book depository, been searched President Kennedy's assassination may have been avoided. Can't comment on the parking without living there. I'm going to post something about the tomb of the unknown soldier in the everything section
  16. Break on what? Only time braid breaks if it has a weak spot, I'm primarily a snook/tarpon fisherman and I use only 15 or 20# braid, does everything just fine. I don't use anything heavier than 15# braid for LMB, no problems. I'm strictly spinning, don't really see the need for a b/c for the above mentioned fish.
  17. The bass boils I see are when I'm pond fishing, I have but 1 rod and there is no time to change lures. I seldom miss a fish when they are boiling, my answer is they hit anything. If I could pick a favorite it would be a top lure, for me it's the most fun. That is not the case with all locations. I've had many canal outings where I've casted into a boiling frenzy and never got bit and tried a number of lures.
  18. A longer rod generally will cast a little further. I think the longer rod will have more backbone to it. Shorter rods are easier to cast fishing in tight spots, like overhanging trees, some prefer a shorter rod for working a top lure.
  19. It's not like he has to run a sub 4 minute mile to compete. He has a proven track record of knowing how to fish and compete at the highest level, no question in my mind he should do just fine.
  20. I have an ugly stick you can have for free ( if you here in Florida to pick up it, lol ) I wouldn't use one for freshwater fishing unless I was soaking bait for catfish or carp. I know there are better choices for a spinning rod that size in the price range. That's a good bass sized reel, not that larger fish can't be caught with it but I would match the rod to the reel like a med 8/17 rod, assuming it's primary use will be for bass. If I were targeting fish like pike or lake trout I'd fish with a 4000 reel and mh 10/20 rod. As mentioned above Ugly Sticks are real popular in saltwater I may see more of them than any other rod ( Penn reel ), 30lb line rating for inshore, and heavier for offshore.
  21. I pretty much agree with scrutch. Imo professional fishermen make themselves thru dedication, a little luck doesn't hurt. I do not consider fishing to be a sport, to me it's a competition. Golf may not have been considered a sport in years past, but I think that's changed. The days of a *** Brewer smoking 3 packs during a round with his gut hanging over his belt are long gone. The top pros are in athletic shape and many could be athletes at other sports, I believe Tiger Woods raised the bar on that.................he won his first tournament in 2 years yesterday.
  22. I'm shivering just looking at the picture. It was 75 here yesterday and I was wearing long underwear.
  23. Wrong ! I enjoy fishing for bass ( I bass fish almost everyday) as well as many other species. I do not care to use live bait for anything other than pelagic fish, and I really prefer trolling for them. Once in a while when the bite is slow I'll soak a bait, fishing does become incredibly easier. I prefer sight casting over anything else.
  24. The responses will vary depending on generation, occupations, and personal use. For me the internet was of very little use back in the early 90's for my business. AOL was of the biggest influences then with their chat rooms.
  25. I loved Lotus 123 spread sheets and used them until a few months ago, 123 is not compatible with windows 7, using excel now and I don't care for it nearly as much. No longer being in business it's not vital anymore but I did find away to access my old lotus spreadsheets with windows 7. I did have a "runtime problem", which crippled the program but I found a registry fix that solved it( I wrote it down just in case) The cell phone was great but I thought I was smart enough to use it only when needed. I would never have it with me when meeting with an account, taking a call when you are in the middle of a conversation is not only rude but it tells your account the phone call is more important than him/her. The fax was more important to me then. Not everyone had email or even knew how to attach a file, but almost all companies had a fax. I was able to give bids or send a copy of statements and a host of other messages very quickly.
