  1. Awesome location!! How did a shopping cart get stranded there?.......lol Back in Michigan my winter fishing consisted of just daydreaming, you guys have more heart than me and thicker blood. ;D
  2. Agree with Tallydude. I've heard stories about people catching them in North Palm county and maybe so. I'm in South Palm Beach county and it's getting mighty tough to catch them here now. We have had a very cool November. I'm catching a few in Broward county, but not like last year.
  3. Golf courses hold some big fish with little or no fishing pressure. Only problem I've had is either parking or once I'm there getting run off. I did find a closed down course in Boca with no fishing signs and so far the the couple of times I've been there have had no negative expierence. Peacocks in that pond too.
  4. Nothing wrong with stripers great fighting fish, wish we had them here. If you ever make it to south Florida for peas, you should try spillway snook, that will test your ability and equpment as well. I can show you places to catch lm, peacock, snook and tarpon all in the same place.
  5. My son in laws were in town so I took them down to Holiday Park xmas day. Zippo, nada, zilch, 1 strike in 4 hours and tossed the kitchen sick at them. Shiners, live nightcrawlers, senkos, raps, etc. Came home hit my canal and killed them. Go figure, lol.........no place like home! Hit the beach sunrise next morning and the jacks were in, they had a big thrill catching those bruisers.
  6. Seems to me dye may make the cork slick, can't understand the reason for doing it in the first place. I clean my cork grips with denatured alcohol, makes em like new.
  7. Peacocks are great, but if unable to drive south for them, try the beach. For my $ nothing beats a jack crevelle. Try an hour before high tide and hope there is bait around and all you need is a spoon or a jig. Most jacks are in the 1-3lb range, but they do go 30-40lb +.
  8. A modification of what I did when i was kid. I rowed very slowly barely moving along the dropoffs with a nightcrawler harness, was very effective.
  9. for the last couple of weeks i've using flukes rigged weedless with moderate results. i went to my pond yesterday afternoon 45 minutes later and catching only 1 bass i then put a senko on for the first time in 2 years and probably had a strike every 3 or 4 casts. a method i use sometimes is what i call "shore trolling", cast the senko(rigged weedless) and walk the bank slowly just letting the bait float behind you nothing fancy just basics. only reason i gave up plastic worms is that i target peacocks not largemouths and peacocks don't hit them very often.
  10. I agree with fishdaddy. i use braid both in salt and freshwater and many times my leader lasts all day without retieing. i only use 10# or 15# braid and my leaders are 20# and 30# mono leaders, i saw no increase in fish production buying expensive fluro leaders. this serves me well from peacocks to bass all the way up to tarpon. i check my knot after a substantial fish is caught or if the line is scraping over rocks, timber, etc. the knot is vital and most of the time if you lose a lure it is because of knot failure, we all tie bad knots sometimes. i use my own version of a loopknot and i will singe it after i've cut it down, helps to prevent the knot from pulling thru.
  11. Too many reasons, and so many memories to list them. now my biggest thrill is watching others catch one, especially a young kid. very often while out on the pier i will hand my rod to a kid telling him this snook is too big for me to handle and i need help. then i give him my rod to reel it in. makes my day.
  12. Crappie jigs.......good success with a gold spoon single hook
  13. Freshwater........xrap08, repalce hooks with vmc #4 saltwater Blaze minnow, if you can find them, $2.99 sports authority bargain bin, work as well as xraps, they make a great top water popper as well. Saltwater...........Xrap10, repalce hooks with #2 mustad, xrap 08 on calm days, when fish are running 5# and under. Yozuris. Soft plastic, hands down DOA cal jerkbait on a DOA 1/4 oz jig head.
  14. Nothing big, but a lot of fun and not bad for 90 minutes of fishing. 8 runners, 1 jack and 1 bluefish at Boynton Beach, Florida, considering a lack of bait and the fall mullet run about done. Picked up about 7-8 lb bass in a canal on the way home, I estimate them on how easy or hard they are to drag up the side of the canal.....lol.
  15. Nice report..............now that's fishing!
  16. If I were a high school teacher I might use an ugly stick as pointer on a blackboard, other than that I'd toss in the garbage. I've got one here you can have for free, used once. So many good choices out there for the same kind of money.
  17. NIGHT&DAY Must be a reason why very few combos don't come with 1 piece but 2 piece rods. I can't think offhand of any 2 piece saltwater inshore rods, at least a quality rod. The only 2 piece rod I would buy other than a fly rod, would be a 10-12 surf rod.
  18. I own 1 conventional reel that I only use for sailfish & kingfish. I don't like to "muscle" a fish in with baitcasters & 50# braid. Tournament fisherman want the fish in the boat fast, they aren't there for fun, but for money. Spinning allows me to play the fish and that's what I'm there for. I never would pass the opportunity to get the ole fly rod out, for me that's the ultimate.
  19. I'm originaly from Michigan and my family was in the fish business for 40 years. Easiest to catch and great tasting........yellow lake perch. Walleye, walleye, walleye !!!!!!!!!!!(Pickeral and walleye are similiar but not the same). Seeing as you are in N.C. I'm not the most familiar with the species availble to you, perhaps trout, not hard to catch and they taste great. On a trip to Mexico, we had tiliapia prepared by the locals. They just gutted the fish and cooked them over an open flame, one of the best meals I had down there. It's a mild tasting fish.
  20. Re : Tierra 2500. I would send it back to daiwa for cleaning and maintenace if you are unhappy with the performance. The reel should either come back like new or they may just send a new one, they often do that. As you are in Michigan ( i'm originally from Birmingham)you won't be using now anyway. My advice...........NEVER TAKE IT TO REEL REPAIR SERVICE, they don't always have the parts you made, always go back to the mfg. Specify that you want your line back ,if they send a new reel they will keep the old spool. I "smooth " up my reels with corosion X or corrison block. It has the consistancy of light syrup. I put a drop or 2 on the spindle, the handle bearings and lube the bail area with it. I think it's terrific stuff and won't eat your bearings like pb blaster. I also do this to a new reel right out of the box before I put it on the rod.
  21. i use a shimano soujourn 25# rod and 5000 pflueger medalist for dolphin, bonita a kings ) it's really my cuda rod for throwing surgical tubes), but what you have is superior.............stronger lighter rod with lifetime warranty and comparable reel but yours is lighter. I have a buddy that casts small rapalas a respectable distance with his 15-30 redbone 7' and it will handle 1 - 1 1/2 oz spoons and jigs with no problem. I think yours is a sweet outfit for those species, I'm excited for you.
  22. I absolutley agree with Wayne. I use a short leader 18-24 inches at most, gives me better casting control and I replace it often. I even gave up fluro leaders. I mostly fish for snook and tarpon every morning(we get them in freshwater too) average being 5-10# and many go 20#+, my personal best this year was 35#, caught on a 8/17 spin rod with 2000 reel and 15# test........hard for me to understand why bass fisherman use 50# braid for those little fish. I do fish bass & peacocks every afternoon.
  23. I don't want to rain on your parade but it sounds like overkill. Nice outfit if you are fishing kings or bonita ( 15-30 rod is even heavy for that). I'm a real big fan of redbones rods, I own 6 of them, a lot of bang for the buck, you can't go wrong with them. As far as the reel goes, if you are fishing mostly freshwater do you need a reel with that much weight and line capacity? Bass do not run like a snook or tarpon. I like what you bought, but I think it is better suited for the pier or surf. Latley I have been using 7' 8-17 redbone with a pflueger 8035 supreme reel 15# braid, manhadles 10# snook, then I use it on on the way home in canals for bass and I think it's on the heavy side for that, but ok if I don't have a freshwater setup with me. With that said I believe you have purchased a beautiful mid pirced outfit and best of luck with it. There is no right or wrong, it's what you like.
  24. I'd like to see regional programming as we fish year round in Florida. Jose Wejebe, The Spanish Fly, is one of the few programs I enjoy.
  25. Why not.............the fish are already wet ;D
