topwater rod suggestions needed
I know this wasn't one of your choices but Cabelas has the All Star ASR topwater rod on sale for $60. It's a 7'2" M/M and might be worth a look. Good luck with whatever you decide on. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20372&id=0053504122679a&navCount=1&podId=0053504&parentId=cat20372&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&hasJS=true

When YOU go out...
My days start out the night before since I usually fish on Saturday and Sunday morning. After me and my brothers have decided which lake we are going to hit I start trying to get my rods together pretty much based on what was successful the last time out. I usually start with a shallow diving crank on one rod. On the other rod I carry it is either a swim jig or some form of t-rigged plastic. Lately its been the strike king space monkey in green pumpkin with a 1/8 oz weight, 2 glass beads and a 5/0 EWG hook and the tips of the claws dipped in chartreuse. Since I'm fishing from the shore I really only carry the 2 rods and they are either 2 spinning rods or 1 baitcast cranking setup and a spinning rod. The bodies of water we fish on pretty much vary in size from small park ponds in the 1-4 acre range to bigger bodies of water. Most of the success I've had this year has been on the smaller lakes and ponds fishing the shallow diver crank over the tops of the weeds just under the surface. Lately with the heat we have been getting to the lakes between 5:30am-6am and pretty much done by 10 or 11am. Thats pretty much my day on the lake.

Cabela's sale.........
I picked the Prodigy up instore and it was marked down to $59 but I would take a printout of the page for whichever rod with me just in case. I have had to do this before with something that was on sale on the web but wasn't marked down in the store and they gave me the web price.

Cabela's sale.........
Got my Prodigy rod during the sale n picked up the PDC705-1 MH/MF to use as a crankbait rod. It's a very nice rod at that sale price point and works great with shallow to medium cranks.

SUGGESTIONS!!!????
The Quantum Kinetic PTi-B is a great reel. Nice and smooth and lightweight with a nice drag system. I have one myself and no problems with it at all.

if you could....
Tim Horton, Jason Quinn. Skeet Reese, KVD are some of the guys I would like to spend some time with on the water.

How long have you been fishing?
I remember my dad taking me and my brothers fishing once in awhile when I was younger but then as I got older and got into sports fishing went by the wayside. Then getting into our late 30's early 40's my brothers started fishing again and I used to laugh at them bout doing it and getting up so early. One trip out of town I decided to join them after picking up a cheap rod and reel at target and I was hooked...lol. It was so peaceful early in the mornings on the dock just of fishing and talking amongst one another. Now its a hobby I truly enjoy. I went from the cheaper Walmart, Target rod n reel setups to Bass Pro and Cabelas setups and getting the best I could afford. My brothers once said I made the biggest step up in equipment from one year to the next by swapping out all the cheaper gear. The bait monkey is alive and well at my house and Cabelas is like going to the grocery store for me...lol. Like the Bass Pro commercial says "Do you plan your days off around weather patterns?" Yes I do and love it. Greatest Hobby in the World

Deciding on my new combo
Good choices and sure you will be pleased with them both once they arrive.

Deciding on my new combo
Nice combo and I would go with the reel and either the Quantum Superlite PT or maybe one of the other rods Cabelas has on clearance.
-
Quantum Smoke Pt
Guess that is why the Superlite Rods are on clearance at Cabelas
-
Quantum Smoke Pt
Looks like the Quantum bait monkey will be knocking on my door again in april :)

Re: Reels on sale at cabelas.com
I saw the same sale last time I was in Cabelas in Hammond and they had 6-8 of the Quantums left about a week ago and didn't see any of the Pflueger reels.

Frogs with mono?
I made one of the comments about "Sure you can" and true it worked once and I was successful in bringing the fish in "that time". I wouldn't want to try to land fish on a frog with mono on a regular basis and after catching that one added 30# Power Pro to the extra spool for the next time I try a frog.

Rod length for shore?
I have a couple of 7' M and MH/MF and also several 6.5' M rods that I use depending on how much space I have for casting.

crankin rod suggestions?
The KVD tour crankin rod is very light and I can't test to how it would perform as I only handled one at BPS. I just picked up a Cabelas Prodigy 7' PDC705-1 MH/MF for $60 to use as my cranking rod and it's been fine so far for shallow cranks. Cabelas also has the Quantum PT Superlite QTC665F M/MF and the Quantum PT Superlite QTC705F M/MF for $80. They also have the All Star ASR series ASR845C 7' M/MF Crankbait rod for $60. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20372_TGP&id=0071465123855a&navCount=12&podId=0071465&parentId=cat20372&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20372&hasJS=true http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20372_TGP&id=0080523125341a&navCount=15&podId=0080523&parentId=cat20372&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&hasJS=true http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0053504122679a&navCount=17&podId=0053504&parentId=cat20372&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20372&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20372&hasJS=true

Frogs with mono?
Sure u can, the fish in my signature pic was caught on 6# Cajun mono on a spinning reel setup. She put up a good fight but I got her in and it wasn't in open water.
-
only spinning rods
like what? you can't cast heavy lures or use heavy line like baircasters and also i have found spinning rods dont do well in heavy cover Sure you can on anything above a 40 Series reel but of course the weight of the reel goes up quit a bit as well.
-
only spinning rods
I've done it for years with just spinning rods even with having 4 baitcast setups which have pretty much just sat except for the occasional usage. I have 6 spinning setups that I have used for everything til just recently but they are still my primary fishing rods.

Need Help deciding reel rod line combo
My suggestion would be the Daiwa Exceler and any decent rod from BPS. You can probably get a good deal on ebay for the Exceler. I have one I recently purchased off ebay for $40 paired with a Cabelas Prodigy Rod PDC705-1 MH/MF for $60 which I'm using at my crankbait setup. I have no problem with using 1/4 oz crankbaits with the reel and it's my new go to combo for crankbaits. The AllStar ASR series of rods is also on sale at Cabelas for $60 and they are specific technigue rods and normally $100 as well. I know u mentioned BPS but of course anything can be ordered online and Good Luck

Spinning reel for around 150
Being a Quantum fan myself I would say go ahead and get the new Quantum Energy PTB 30. I have the Quantum Catalyst PTB20 and Kinetic PTB20 and they are great reels. Lighter than last years models and great drags and very smooth.
-
First decent spinning reel?
I have an older Quantum Incyte as well that is still in service and a newer Incyte would be a nice reel. I would also suggest the Daiwa Exceler or Daiwa Regal XiA or the New Quantum Kinetic and then the Newer Sahara. Ebay would be your friend for all of them if there isn't a sporting goods store nearby.

Experimenting With Braided Line
Point the rod tip at the bait, reel down, hold the spool, pull straight back (or walk backwards if you are on the bank). It should break at the knot. Many times that will dislodge the lure as well but be careful, sometimes it will come flying back at you. I also keep a work glove in my bag to put on and wrap the braid around the glove and just pull on it line til the jig either pulls free or the line breaks at the knot.

Need help with choosing line.
I took RW's advice and added the 12# Ultra Soft to my Daiwa Exceler Baitcaster to pair with my Cabelas Prodigy 7' MH/MF rod.
