  1. I would say shimano calais or Quantum tour if you dont wanna spend 400
  2. Down here on the cape, the lake has been open for a week or two now and i figured i might give it a shot. Casted out a bill lewis rattle trap in crayfish color, and brought it in as slow as i could manage while still maintaining a good wobble and as i got it about feet from the dock a BIG rainbow just demolished it. After a good fight, i pulled her up and she weighed in at just a hair above 3 pounds. Absolutely beautiful fish and pretty surprising considering that i was fishing what is generally considered to be a warm, weed choked kettle pond where i cant imagine a trout surviving. I'm guessing this one had been holding over in a deep section of the pond after a past stocking. Pretty sweet though.
  3. If i'm gonna be dropshotting and in general finessing deep clear water for smallies but still wann use braid as a main line, how long should my flouro leader be? Also whats the best line for medium sized cranks, lipless cranks, and jerkbaits?
  4. Late august on a weightless yum dinger in shad color. 9 pounds.
  5. Are there any bass clubs in Eastern Mass or cape cod?
  6. What are your favorite early season/ice out tactics for largemouth?
  7. Put you're braking on all the way. Depending on what kind you have, this means turning the side knob down as tight as it goes or puting all of the brakes on inside. Continue to do gentle side casts and just keep a very light amount of pressure on the spool with thumb, making sure to press down hard just before your lure hits the water. As the line shoots out of the guides, follow the lures path with your rod tip. Good luck and omce you start baitcasting you'll never go back.
  8. Ya I know. I took my baitcastin rod along just in case, and I was very surprised considering that it's 31 degrees outside!!
  9. During this time of the year when the water is cold an vegetation becomes scarce, how should I fish? The pond I'm fishing on still has a few scattered coves which are iced over, but the area I'm fishing in is about 5-6 feet deep with plenty of bottom debris such as sticks and leaves. Due to school I'm rather inexperienced with fishing at this time of year and am more used to fishing in the warmer months. Any advice would be appreciated.
  10. This reel looks sweet and i've been savin up a ton lately and almost have enough. is it really worth the $400?
  11. I'm trying to get into deep dropshotting this summer and have come to realize that i will do much better if i can get a sonar system. I dont own a bass boat but do have a rowboat with a trowling motor which i want to hook a fishfinder up to. What's the best bang for my buck?
  12. thanks for all the replies. btw it's a DSR 822 because i plan on fishing up to 50 or 60 feet and the DSR 820 is rated for up to 25.
  13. probly a stupid question, but im looking into buyin a g loomis drop shot rod to match my new quantum energy pti a spinning reel (which everyone should probly check out on ebay considering i got it for $80 and its sweet) but i dont want to commit to $250 worth of JUST drop shotting....do you think this rod would do well with other finesse techniques as well? texas rig? weightless plastics?
  14. I've used braid my entire life and am wondering what is the best flourocarbon to use for dropshotting and finesse fishing in cold clear lakes? im going to be using 8 lb test on a new spinning outfit and i am willing to spend as much as needed.
  15. i've actualy tried these guys not only as shakey worms for smallies, but also weightless on heavy surface vegetation. the strikes are explosive, especially when you let it just dangle in the surface film. I would keep 'em
  16. has anyone used the g. loomis drop shot spinning rod? i have just learned that i can get it for $180.00. is it worth the money?
  17. i can't say that i've ever seen squid looking things in freshwater, but there is a pond in littleton, massachusetts that sports a very large population of some rare kind of freshwater jellyfish. they come out in the warmer months and are about 2 inches in diameter. its pretty cool.
  18. thanks for the advice, we've also got big brookies and browns where i fish for smallmouth so i might end up pulling some interesting stuff.
  19. I'd like to learn how to dropshot for smallmouth. When is the best time of year? Where and how should i fish a dropshot rig?
  20. try strike king's 3x finesse worm. its made out of this really cool material that stretches out to like 3 feet long and then compresses back into the original position. also zoom finesse worms
  21. first of all, the smallie fishing gets better as you go north, so u might wanna try some cold maine or new hampshire lakes. but where ever u choose to fish for them, rockpiles are key as well the edges of pads and grass beds. during late summer i tend to catch them at areas where cold streams empty into the lake. My favorite smallie lure is by far, the classic senko rigged weightless. Either fish it VERY slow on the bottom (line watching is a big part of this because a lot of time youre not in direct contact with the senko as it falls and this is when most hits come), or i like to fish one high in the water column or on the surface with a lot of movement and splash. I use bright silvers and whites the most to mimic a baitfish in distress. but i have caught big fish on just about any other color as long as its kind of subtle. salamanders work great to when fished just off of the bottom on a texas or carolina rig. Smallmouth are probly my favorite fish and they pack a ton of fight when they get to 3 or 4 pounds. Good luck with 'em
  22. I'm not sure about bass, but are there trout in the area? I've heard of some monster brookies and browns coming out of old beaver ponds.
  23. a white or silver senko rigged weightless and jerked over the surface as a topwater with frequent pauses. i like to cast to the edge of pads or structure and make a ton of splash as i rip it towards the boat. hits usually come right at the pause as i let it rest for a second or two, and THEY ARE TREMENDOUS!!!! i've caught numerous 5+ pound smallies in the 22-24 inch range doing this.
  24. I fish on a lake with cold, clear water and plenty of rocks. The place is crawling with crayfish. I generally catch plenty of fish using chub and shiner imitations, but i would like to start trying to imitate crayfish. What are the best imitations and how should i fish them?
  25. I'm from eastern mass and and have been fishing since age 4 in western maine for monster smallmouths. My preferred techniques are soft plastics (especially senkos), topwater, and any type of fishing involving light finesse baits. I've also been flyfishing for mainly trout for about 2 years now. I'm looking to get into cankbaits a little more considering that that is my weakest area. My largest fish to date are a 6 1/2 pound smallie out of the rangeley region in western maine, a 9 1/2 pound largemouth bass from my secret cape cod pond, and a 23 inch rainbow from up north.
