First Bass Boat!
Get what you can afford and get what fits you best. I agree with simplejoe, if you've never had a boat before, start of smaller. I had a 14' jon with a 25hp tiller steer for three years. During that time I saved up and bought a 20' G3. It really is imperitive to get something that suits you and you are comfortable with.

Do you travel to the lake with boat key in ignition?
When I bought my boat I was lucky enough to get 3 sets. I have one set in the ignition at all times, one in my glove box, and one set at home.

losing my job...
No I do not work at a private school, an as I said I am not trying to get other people let go just to save me. All of the teachers that are non-tenured, which are the ones losing their jobs, all agreed to taking a pay freeze or a pay cut to stay. That didn't work. I will have my Masters Degree in May and I told my district I was willing to stay at the level I am at an not get a raise. So the point I am making is that we have made sacrifices. Even the teachers losing their jobs offered a pay freeze to save us. Our school board and superintendent are not willing to make these decisions. I am also NOT by any means saying my situation is worse than anyone that has been laid off either.

losing my job...
I just have to rant and left off some steam...... I am a teacher in Illinois and have been informed I will be losing my job at the end of the year due to budget cuts. Our district is over 1 million dollars short of what the state should be giving us. Now, I understand times are tough. Here's what really gets to me..... 1. The middle school and high school are in one building with approximately 300 students total. There are two principals who make over $75, 000. Why in the hell do we need to principals for 300 students? A lot of schools have 2,000 students and only have one principal and a dean of students. 2. Our transportation director makes almost $80,000 dollars. At one point, the principals were responsible for this position. Why do we need a transportation director? 3. None of the three district principals or the superintendent are taking pay cuts at all to save teachers. Now I want you to understand......I dont want other people to lose their jobs so that I can keep mine. But honestly, how can you educate children by cutting teachers and keeping unnecessary administration? Thanks for listening.

Did anyone else read the article in the lastest Bassmasters mag about Gerald swindle?
Just read it this morning....it definitely makes you think about how easy life can be taken.

De-winterizing your boat
One thing that I think is often overlooked is the trailer. Check your lights and brakes. Check the tire pressure and see if they are in good shape. Re-pack your bearings and grease the heck out of them. One way to have a disappointng first day of the spring is to not even be able to get the boat to the water.

boat anchors?
I have a 20' G3 and I fish a lake very similar to the one you describe. I really like my River Anchor. I have a 30 pound anchor. Might be a little overkill for my boat but doesn't budge. I'm guessing the 20 or 30 pounder would be good for you too IMO. Here's the link to check it out. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_45253_225006001_225000000_225006000_225-6-1

Boat size: 18' 8" vs 20'
Moral of the story is, buy what you like. Buy what you can afford. Buy what works for you. After all, the fish don't care if you're in a $50,000 Ranger or a beat up ol' Jon, all that matters is gettin' them in the boat.

Superstions?
My partner/cousin and I have a couple: - always have a 12 pack (unless tounry rules prohibit) - I'm always in front, he's always in back no matter who's boat we're in - Always stand, never ever sit (unless runnin of course) - I always have an orange Gatorade and sunflower seeds on board

Pimp My Ride
I agree with KL. My cousin has a 16ft jon and he put a floor in. It makes movin around in the boat so much easier. Your gear doesnt get stuck and you actually make the boat seem more stable. I would also recommend sealing the edges of the floor with some type of spray in foam. It keeps water out from under the floor and things like weights and sinkers from going under too

Boat size: 18' 8" vs 20'
You're talking 16 inches. If you like it and its a good deal, get it. I have a 20' and my buddy has a 19' and I honestly can say it isnt a big enough difference to really notice.

Horse power rating
I would have to agree with not changing the decals. While its only 15 horsepower, it is still illegal. The question is this, when is any form of cheating considered "OK"?

Successful fishing shows
I like shows that kinda bounce all over the place. To me, watching Bill Dance fish (on his private stocked lake) one lure for 30 minutes just doesn't do it for me. I want to see info on new products, new ideas/techniques, news, info on all aspects of fishing like boats, non-tackle equipment and etc. I guess what I'm saying is give me 5-6 five minute shows at once. Watching one person fish one lure in one location puts me to sleep faster than tennis.
