Kicker Strategy
This, this, and this!!!! I still have trouble understanding why people get their limit then change there mindset to, "lets go get a kicker and win this thing!" Why in the world is your mindset not like that from the get go? If your goal is to get a limit, then a kicker, then you have wasted half your day to get that limit that isn't going to help you in most cases. The guys that win and win consistently come in with numerous big fish each time they hit the scales. Why? Because they are "fishing for the kicker" the second they start calling boat numbers. I realized at the young age that this mentality of "getting 5" was how I was going to donate my money week in and week out. As soon as I changed that to fishing for quality fish the whole day, my results improved dramatically and I started taking the money from the guys running around like a chicken with it's head cut off to get their 5.

Scrounger Jig
The 1/4oz Scrounger with a pearl colored Original Fluke fished on 8lb line has been dynamite for me this year.

Fliping Frogs
The Zoom Horny Toad with a 1/4oz weight and 5/0 Gamakatsu EWG is N-A-S-T-Y flipped in and around shallow grass or wood. I also like trimming it up and putting it on a light weight jig. Something about it's leg action that gets em' to commit on some days.

Top Water Frogs
A lot of people think they are missing strikes on their frog because they set the hook too soon. From my experience, I think this is wrong. On days where the fish are really on the frog bite, they basically hook themselves. I really feel that the fish aren't fully committing to your frog when your missing a good percent of them. Try changing the color, leg length, retrieve cadence, basically anything to mix it up until you find what they will really eat. Also, sometimes when your missing a lot of fish on the frog, it means you need to change to a different topwater or maybe even a shallow, subsurface technique like a weightless soft jerkbait or shallow swimbait.

What are the smallest lures you use to catch bass?
Love the 1/16oz Bitsy Bug with a small Uncle J's Pork Trailer. My PB fell to a BPS Finesse Craw w/ a 1/0 EWG and a 1/16oz weight with 8lb line.

Lizards Vs Brush Hogs
Chris, I use the brush hog every time with one exception. Spring. I love a junebug colored lizard in Spring when I found shallow, dirty water. If it were me, I would stock up on the hogs, and leave the lizzys at home.

snaps and spinnerbaits
I use snaps all the time with my spinnerbaits. Take a split ring and slide it over the line tie. Never lost a spinnerbait doing this.

what would you throw?? help..
This time of year is awesome for a lipless crankbait. If I was fishing behind a guy throwing a lipless, then I would tie on something like the Yo-Zuri Drum or the Excalibur One Knocker. They both have different sounds than your typical lipless crankbaits and that can make a huge difference. Also, if after a few hours neither of you have caught anything, try mixing up your retrieve. A yo-yo'ed lipless crank can tear em up sometimes, especially with the water still cold. Good luck man.

Annoyed with soft bodied frog tails: Only buying cheapies
I know Gene, it sucks. We would probably do better if we switched to Snag Proof or Koppers. Cwen, try keepin them out of the sunlight all day. Makes the rubber legs break down and either dry out, or just straight melt. That should stop your problem.

How would you approach this?
And OP, to answer your question..... If I pull up on a lake without any previous knowledge, the first thing I do is look as previous notes I have in my fishing log. Bass are bass and most of the time I will have faced a similar fishing condition in the past. If you don't have a fishing log, just read up on fish migration and where the majority of fish tend to be at certain times of the year. Water clarity would then dictate if I thought the prespawn fish were shallow or deep. I live in GA, so at this point, I would be trying to find any potential spawning area with the closest deep water access. I would start out on the shallow side throwing out into deeper water in the morning and as the day warmed and I felt the fish could potentially move in toward the flats, I would set up my boat in the deep water and cast in. If I couldn't find them there, I would look at some of the major points on the lake and eliminate them until I started hitting the secondary points. If all else fails, go find some real shallow cover and pound the hell out of it with jigs and shallow crankbaits. This time of year is great because you really can catch them with anything you want. On my boat, you'll see a bunch of jigs, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and crankbaits tied on. Don't forget about topwater either. Good luck man edit -- I didn't see the part about not having electronics. If I didn't have my sonar, I would put on some old school sonar.......Carolina rig and a Spro Little John DD

How would you approach this?
I highly advise you not to follow this little tidbit because in my experience, nothing could be further from the truth. To dismiss a piece of cover because it isn't on "structure" is foolish. Take a lake like Toho in Florida.....not much structure there seeing as it literally is a cereal bowl, but man, you sure can find fish on the cover (grass), even though no structure is present. Also, cover in a way is like structure. Just because there is one tall stump on a flat, doesn't mean fish won't relate to it. They will hold on the stump because in a way, it acts like a small drop off or shelf that they can suspend next to. Gotta think outside the box, kid!

Get a Grip
I'm not so sure I agree with this. What exactly should you get in return for performing well at a good level? What exactly is a "good level"? To say you deserve something out of fishing because you did well in a couple "good" tournaments just doesn't sound right to me.

What kind of tennis shoes do you wear?
I actually liked the shoe and could not figure out why I have not seen it... -The Nike LunarGlide+ is the most gender-specific shoe in the Lunar Series. From the inside out and the bottom up, it is built for a women's foot and body. It also includes an ultra-light, ultra-strong Flywire upper to provide a lightweight, snug yet flexible fit. And while it offers the most plush cushioning, it is also the most supportive of the three shoes. Ha. You would have never guessed it was a women's shoe, would you? I have extremely flat feet and I roll my ankles bad. This shoe was recommended to me and since I've had them, I haven't rolled once. It's also made it so the insides of my knees don't hurt when I run. So far wearing a women's shoe hasn't effected my modeling career too bad
