I grew up on the Louisiana Gulf coast and spent many a day as a deck hand/first mate on charter fishing boats. I have a good friend that has 2007 Hatteras 77 Convertible She features a length of 76' 10", a 22' beam and a shallow draft of 5'3", easily the best in her class.

I'm sitting here watching Beat Charlie Moore & remembering how much respect I've lost for this guy. His show starts off saying how Charlie will fish against anyone, I mean anyone; pro anglers, weekend anglers, pro athletes, brothers, sisters, anyone. Avid having considered your requirements I would suggest something in aluminum with a 40 HP. Given your physical condition I would also recommend getting one with console steering since a tiller steer is hard on shoulders and elbows. Since you mentioned 5,000 acres or less the 40 HP will offer plenty of speed to get you off the lake in case of foul weather. Don't buy a flat bottom either but go with a modified bottom instead, this will provide a smoother ride I choppy water. Don't let anyone convince you that some thing larger is need, I fished Toledo Bend for years out of an aluminum boat and have won tournaments out of one. My last boat was a Alweld 1652 V-Nose Modified V bottom with a tunnel with a 40 Tohatsu, rigged with a depth finder, trolling motor, carpeted, running lights, and bilge pump for under $8,000. There are many to choose from Alweld, G3, Tracker, Xpress and others

Y'all got this catch & release thing backwards; the state or world record bass are the ones you want to release. Y'all need to do some serious research on Selective Harvesting; releasing 100% of your bass can be worst than keeping them. I would suggest y'all do some reading over at Texas Parks & Wildlife and try to understand why this state is producing such numbers of double digit bass from such a large variety of lakes. With programs like the Share-A-Lunker program and others TP&W has convinced angles to keep smaller bass while giving the 10+ bass to them for breeding in captivity insuring the gene pool. Yea on occasion I'll keep a limit of small bass and anyone saying it's a shame clearly doesn't not understand Selective Harvesting and are doing more harm than I am.

Your main objective is to keep the jig in contact with the bottom at all times, something most anglers fishing grass fail to do. When the jig stops falling many anglers believe they have reached bottom, but from an underwater view with scuba gear the jig has only settled on the thick base stems of the Hydrilla. After making a pitch strip about 3 or 4 arms lengths of line letting the jig fall near straight down. Then shake the jig to make sure it has not stop on the grass stems. With the jig now resting on the bottom, pause several seconds, the shake the jig once or twice with pauses between each. If no strike is detected simply reel up & pitch again moving locations about 20 ft from the previous. Once you get bite quickly kick or toss a buoy marker over board, fish in grass flats tend to school up so when you catch one there is usually more. Circle the buoy in increasing diameters & depths working the jig slowly (I once caught nine 6 lb + bass in an area the size of your living room). You may work 70 yards or 700 yards to locate the fish but when you do hang on!

Monte Ne Branch: An entire village has been inundated within Monte Ne Branch. Some of the foundations and stone walls are at or above the surface, while others are in 20-foot depths or more. This is a good region to look for largemouth and spotted bass nearly all year. South of Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area: This is an excellent area to cast 6-to 8-inch plastic worms for largemouth and spotted bass. Two prime holding areas are the old pond dam and the outside point of the shallow gravel hump. Sugar, Falls and Esculapia hollows all have standing timber that holds largemouth bass, spotted bass and crappie. Areas where chunk rock changes to pea gravel tend to concentrate most of the fish. Cedar trees can be more productive than hardwoods, as well. In spring and fall, bass can be taken on white or chartreuse spinnerbaits, crankbaits and Carolina-rigged 4-to 6-inch plastic worms. Productive summer bass lures include jigs n' pigs and 8-to 10-inch plastic worms. Black spinnerbaits and stickbaits work well at night.

Kick some bass

I use attractants for two purposes first as a lubricant because I fish in grass a lot and the attractant helps my plastic baits slide through easier. I use Fish Formula II or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of pure anise oil added; this is to mast any odor my plastic may have pick up.

I use Cap Lights in white not worrying about it harming my night vision since I'm fishing not flying a fighter jet; the effects on your night vision will only last for a couple minutes.
