Will this fish be ok?
As we're all always trying to learn more about how fish think, let me pose four possible scenarios that may be unfolding on that ledge at this moment... All the female bass are making a big todo about his injury and offering consolation. All the bass are shunning him for mistaking a hooky thing for a meal. All the other bass are checking out his new piercing. He's swimming around proudly, flexing his gills and boasting of how he "took one for the team".

Zebco 20/20 question
I remember the old saying "There's one in every crowd" referring to wise-cracks. You guys proved that there might be multiples. Hey. It was $5 and there's a monkey on my back. As if there aren't monkeys in Oklahoma? And, no, it's a 20/20. Reel Mech - you are the one I had most hoped would reply. It is indeed the ProStaff model with gold-plated bearings and titanium drag star. In all seriousness, guys.. I know about quality BCs and Spinners but have no problems with Zebco cheapos. I grew up with them. My question remains unanswered.

Zebco 20/20 question
I bought a Zebco 20/20 reel and rod combo at a garage sale yesterday for $5. I've never had one of these but own a few 33's that have a lever to select Anti-Reverse On & Off. This 20/20 doesn't have that and line just spools off. Was it designed this way or do I need to dig into it? If it has no anti-reverse, I'll put a 33 on it and call it another panfish rig for the grandson.

Music Poll
I had to go with Classic Rock because the term is used so loosely these days. Where do you put Bob Dylan (after going electric) and Kris Kristofferson on the shelves at the record store? Charlie Daniels, in his formative years, could rock your butt off. Still can if he wants to but he's called Country. Jimmy Buffett kinda defies the 'lable' thing, too. Pure Prairie League? Amy! My head hurts.

How do you store your spinnerbaits?
Yea, its on the side of the box lid that does not have carpet if that helps, the inside of the box. when you shut the lid they just dangle freely but dont fall off. I got some eye hooks that at home depot, and just opened them about 1/8" so you can get the wire of the spinnerbait in there. Thx Brian! Now I have another 'project' that gets prioritized after my honey-do's. LOL. It looks like a 3/8 x 2" firring strip. Did you use rivets to attach it? I've often thought that there was wasted space under those lids and now you've solved a problem for me. Or created a new one! Either way - good idea!

How do you store your spinnerbaits?
Brian - it's hard to tell from the pic but, are those stored on the underside of a rod-box lid? If so, that's ingenious!

Wizard of Oz / Darkside of the Moon
This thread has devolved to the point where it is not only clear that it is not a Music Forum but, you guys don't have Quad Stereo systems with 8 Tracks in your boats, either! The 'art' of back-masking started with the Beatles on thier 'White Album'. Listening to the song Revolution # 9 backwards (on an LP spun backwards on a turntable) hinted that Paul had died. Certain lyrics in the song, when played (faster) in reverse, appeared to recite "Paul is dead man". Who discovered (or leaked) this remains unknown but, it's intrigue prompted the Beatles to attempt it in a more accurate manner on the 'Sgt Peppers' album. What the listener needed was a big imagination. Other bands, including the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, also made attempts at back-masking with frail results. In the early '70's, Black Oak Arkansas released a live album where Jim Dandy repeated the word "Natas" over and over at the beginning of a song. It was intended to say "Satan" when played backwards. That gig didn't go over too well, either. The grooves on an LP are intended to hit the needle from only one side and from the other direction, the word was distorted as 'Na-tasheeee'. Soon after, Pink Floyd surmised that perhaps content could be buried in the mix at a low enough volume that it would register as being heard but, not loud enough that it would be audible. This experiment also failed, even though those with expensive equipment CAN extract the message of calling Pink at the Funny Farm from the forward played music. While Black Sabbath was rumored to have dabbled with the idea, they probably just said it outright. Ozzy, going solo, took it to another level but, still, 'In Your Face'. The song Suicide Solution held no back-masking or hidden messages. When Judas Priest was dragged into court in the early '90's, the prosecution had no credible evidence and the case was dismissed. The young men that took thier own lives were not instructed to do so by some 'subliminal suggestion' on a heavy metal album. They did so of thier own accord. The music of thier choosing was simply a reflection of thier own thoughts. If I want to hang myself? I might choose one of David Allan Coe's more sinister albums. If I want to go fishing? Maybe Jerry Reed or Dolly Parton.

Birthday rod and reel =)
Happy B-Day, NA! I don't know much about bay fishing but, I know that Shakespeare makes some good stuff. How about you get it wet and give us a report? Don't use cake for bait.

Travel distance to nearest lake
Eight miles Eastward puts me on Lake Norfork. Twenty miles NorthWest on Bull Shoals. Five to the West on the White River. 100 yards finds me on a 2 acre pond. Right across the hall from my computer is a 120 gallon bathtub where I sometimes check the action of lures. Is that as strange as my wife thinks it is?

TOPO MAPS???
Busy mentioned USGS maps. I like these and order them at a local bookstore. There's also a company called DeLorme that sells topo CDs. I have an old version from about 10 years ago but it's still quite good. You can even change the viewing angle on these.

First
I remember it distinctly even after 35 years. I was 8 yrs old and my uncle Bill Fletcher and I were fishing Lake Norfork at night. He had rigged me with a 7" grape Jelly Worm. I pulled in a 3 pounder! He even bought me a little stick-on patch from Panther Bay marina the next day. The kind where you write on it the size of the fish. I wore that patch proudly!

Fishing Superstitions
Not a superstition but a word of advise... Don't use a worm hook to pick corn-on-the-cob out of your teeth while traversing choppy water. That sounds like an ancient Chinese Proverb, huh? LOL You should find toothpicks in your tacklebox. Somewhere.

what is backing?
I used to use backing line when I would put on fresh line after the first loading of a reel. I tied it directly to the backing (older) line. Like Cart said, it's a waste of line. You will feel the knot slide across your finger or under your thumb when you start getting low on fresh line. Something that I've started doing, though, is wrapping a strip of leather around my spools. It takes up the amount of space that I used to leave for backing. I get scraps from a buddy that does leather-work and it comes in various thickness'. I apply it with upholstery glue. One advantage is that if you use a line conditioner, the leather will absorb it and let it 'leak' back out.

D-A-M spinnerbaits
I was at my local BPS annex today and they had D-A-M spinnerbaits in the closeout section. I had never tried one before so I bought a 1/2 oz with nickle and gold dbl willows and a 'shad' skirt for $2.25. It came with a trailer hook and looks to be as nice as the StrikeKing and Harts that I prefer. I'm planning to test it tomorrow morning once the crappie stop biting. My question is why these are on 'clearance'. Is DAM going out of business? Thier website wouldn't come up for me. The new BPS catalog doesn't have them. Were they over-priced? If this feels/works as good as it looks, I may be tempted to clean up at that price.

Hi from AR
Hello to all from north-central Arkansas. I live near Mtn Home and fish mainly lakes Norfork and Bull Shoals. I also spend a bit of time on the White, Norfork and Buffalo Rivers. I'm 43 and have been fishing since I was old enough to walk, I guess. It's great to be here!
