Year Review
Kevin, drop me an e-mail at owf_2002@hotmail.com. I'm from Port Dover, about an hour south of Hamilton but I know Toronto Harbour/Credit River hosts a variety of fishing opportunities.

Year Review
SirKevin what part of Ontario are you from?? Perhaps next spring we could do some carp fishing? I know a lot of good carp areas in Ontario. And no special equipment is needed, thats why I love them so much!! Most times I use my ultra light, just for the heck of getting a huge fish on light tackle. I also made up a special carping rod which is really a fly reel with 20lb test on a 6' spinning rod. You wouldn't believe the fight you get with this outfit!! njvbass I most often use corn or worms for carp. Don't like bread it doesn't seem to stay on the hook. When I get really serious for big carp I use french fries. They are HOT!! That big carp in the pic was caught on a five diamonds spoon while fishing for trout, on my ultra light. I saw him come up and inhale it - it was insane! He must have been hungry. It was buried in his throat, but I managed to get it out with relatively little harm to the fish before releasing him.

Year Review
Had a good fishing year this year, lots of bass caught unfortunately nothing over 4lbs. Caught my most trophy fish of other species though! Including an award winning carp, pike, bass and walleye! Not to mention my first ever coho salmon. Can't wait for next year.. hopefully it starts off with some ice action!

Quick Questions.
1. Would you be interested in something like this? Yes, always interested in things that will give me a good deal! 2. What is the maximum you would be willing to pay to join? Depends on what I'm getting out of it. If I buy the lures/tackle all the time, then I'd probably pay a lot even up to and over $100. 3. Why do you think a club like this would/ would not benefit you? I think it would benefit me because I would love to get lures that I use often at a wholesale price. What a deal it would be if I could get all my spinnerbaits at that price! Even with the membership fee I buy so many of them that I would make it worthwhile in the end.

Defining Success
Success: Having fun and accomplishing a goal you have set for the trip. I set a goal for every trip, it may not be a big goal - maybe something like "I will learn to fish a crankbait in shallow brush" and by the end of the trip I have accomplised this goal, making it a success. If I catch a few bass, it's a bonus.

Not just a forum
Have always used the entire resource. Probably the most informative and easy to use bass fishing site on the web. I love it!

Name a lure thats a fish catching machine
3" White Mister Twister grub with a black jighead. It's a fish catching machine for sure!

New spin "Bassmaster, a day on the lake with
njvbass, if you gave them 3 lures - I bet they would show you a whole bunch of new ways to fish them! And fish them in areas you wouldnt expect. They would certainly make due. Thing is, so many rely on electronics nowadays, I wonder how well they would do if you just took the sonars off their boats! Or GPS! I think that would be quite a mess to deal with for them. Not to say they still wouldn't beat my arse in a fishin' contest, just saying it would sure make it tougher on them.

not sleeping
Depends where I'm going/who my partner is. If I'm going trout fishing on the creek for instance, I can get more than my fair share of sleep. haha And if I'm going with somebody who is full of bores the whole day, I can get lots of sleep. But if I'm going to a new lake, fishing a tournament, or going with a really good friend that makes it fun whether you catch fish or not - then I have troubles sleeping! When I'm camping with my friends we usually end up staying up all night talking about fishing anyway.. then 5 in the morning comes around and the sky gets a little brighter, and we say "alright lets get fishin!"

You have one cast...
Yeah I agree with Pond Pro, a little ultra light with a tiny hook, a tiny split shot, a trout float and a quarter of a nightcrawler... that'll catch something, just about everywhere.

State of Bass???
New York is my pick. It's pretty diverse as far as species go plus there's 2 of the great lakes to fish, PLUS the St Lawrence PLUS Finger Lakes PLUS The Niagara River!

Favorite fishing Location
Hmm good question but it's really hard to choose.. I love Lake Erie, but my favourite spot is probably any of the Canadian Shield lakes. Gotta love the rocky, open atmosphere of the near north and the calm fertility of the lakes, not to mention usually being alone or not hearing the passing of cars at night, just seeing stars and hearing nature!

Catch'em and Eat'em
MMM I love smoked catfish, steelhead & salmon!! I also love fried crappie, perch, walleye, pike and yes even bass.. I keep fish quite often! If you catch some and the livewell's empty, and you're just out there for fun anyway, why not stop and grab a snack for later!

Does lure advertising effect what you buy?
I'd like to say none but that's not technically true. If I see a lure in an ad that looks interesting or new to me I'll go out and buy it. But flashy ads don't really affect me, it's just if the lure looks appealing and I happen to see it.

Is bass fishing the same big or small?
I think somebody mentioned the year class fish schooling together. I think this is true.. but big bass can be in the same areas as small ones. You just have to remember that the biggest bass in the lake or river will usually take the best structure/cover there is. Sometimes this means they are in the most obvious spots... but they are conditioned to all those lures that people are throwing at them. Or they feed at less pressured times (like night time). That's why night anglers do really well for monster bass on areas that are pressured in the day time. That's just my opinion anyway.

Fiberglass & Aluminum boat tournaments
The issue with aluminum vs fibreglass used to be mainly speed.. but with new innovations in the aluminum boat world that problem has been solved. It's all personal preference. Aluminum boats are a little lighter and don't handle rough water as well as a deeper fibreglass boat, with the exception of Deep V hulls that are made for big water. Aluminum boats also produce more vibrations or sounds underwater, especially if uncarpeted. Some believe this affects fishing.. I'm not too sure about that personally because I've caught fish from 3 ft away flipping plastics in my old aluminum at the cottage. Basically price is the only difference.. Personally I think that if you can get away with spending the $10,000+ LESS on an aluminum and not compromise performance/fishability, go for it! I can't do that here, living on Lake Erie unless I go for a deep V hull, because those bass boat style aluminums just can't take the rough water as well. That's just my opinion anyway..

What is your favorite fishing show?
I used to love Bassmasters when it was on up here, but now in my small town we don't get it anymore. I've never seen the FLW shows. I used to like In-Fisherman and Hank Parker as well. Nowadays I only get the Canadian shows and Bob Izumi's Real Fishing is the best one on Canadian TV!
-
What new technique are you going to try?
I'd like to master going fishing more than twice a month!
-
Are you loyal to a brand?
I don't think I'm intentionally brand specific but around here tackle shops are scarce so I basically just have the big chain stores like Wal Mart or Canadian Tire for tackle.. so my plastics are usually Berkley, Yum or Matzuo and my jigs are always Strike King, lol. Stuff like crankbaits there is a big selection and spinnerbaits I have to drive at least an hour to even get any! And it's usually Stanley or Strike King. I've begun to order online for most of my tackle, but I try not to stay loyal to just one company unless I'm sure they make the best of something.. like for fishing line, it's Silver Thread for me!

End of season
I ice fish, or fish whatever rivers aren't iced up for trout. Even though bass is closed for insane amounts of time up here I keep busy and keep my skills sharp by targetting multi-species!
-
crunch time!
I find the nearest docks and chuck a 3" grub around or if too weedy a texas rigged tube jig. This seems to always produce a few fish for me.
-
Smallmouth Questions
Not much to add to what everyone else said, besides smallies love jigging spoons. Give them a go on drop offs and humps and just watch the results! The best part of this tactic, is it works pretty much all year and it's easy to do. Drop your jigging spoon, and jig every few seconds. Have fun and good luck.

Bass games
My personal favourite is Trophy Bass 4 for the PC and EA Championship Bass for PC or PS1 I think.

where are you from
Yep, I'm from Port Dover, about half an hour south of Hamilton. Where in Ontario are you from?

Scent or no scent
I make my own dough type scent, it goes on the hook rather than anywhere else, and since it's a dough it will stay there all day. I also make a liquid scent for lures where the dough would hinder action/appearance. Garlic/strawberry has been a killer flavour! I also have some Yum shad scent which I put in my pastics bags to keep them fresh.
