Berkley flicker shad shallow
Nope, they're walleye baits, don't bother. If you bought it already though, just send it to me and I'll let my kids fish with it or something. I just got about 20 of them in a few weeks ago in preparation for winter time fishing. They were more productive than a regular shad rap for me last year by a long shot.

Frogs taking on water
Softer frogs take on more water it seems, but those are the frogs that are easiest to get a good hookset with also. The Savage Gear Lily Walker and FishLab Rattle Toad are 2 that I've fished that don't take on water bad. Both are a little tougher plastic.

Nice fish! Did you get a length and girth? That's about the only way you could get anything to point you towards your scale being off. I picked the wrong lakes this weekend, both were showing early signs of turnover with cloudy water that had lots of suspended particles blocking visibility in their normally clear waters. Friday I went in search of a big spotted bass, which are very few and far between in Kansas. I did not find many, but I did get one that was about half the state record. They shocked a state record in this lake and the biologist told me there's "several", state records in the lake, so that's what I'm hoping for ever time I go there. Saturday I took the oldest out for a windy morning. Last time I was on this lake I could see 8-10 feet down, but it was cut to maybe 2' despite having very little rain. We caught some dinks, which is mostly what I expect to catch there anyways, and he had a good time, so that's what matters. Lake caught the first fish of the day before we'd hardly left the ramp, and he let me know about it.

Gut Hooked Fish
Try to hold your breath for 2 minutes after strenuous physical activity... Also, some of them aren't going to make it no matter what you do. If it's a keeper and you like to eat them, keep it, or find someone who does.

FIRST TIME FOR ME
I agree it's likely an infection that took hold, possibly from damage done during the spawn.

Do smallmouth always go crazy for shiners/minnows or was the bite just strong today?
You caught those shiners in your crawfish trap, so there's probably a bunch of them around, making them likely to be a food item the smallmouth are keying on, or at least one towards the top of their list. If you put a prey item a fish is keying on in front of it, it'll probably eat it. Make sure you know what kind of baitfish it is though, I know some of the smallmouth rivers I fish have baitfish species that are protected and not allowed as bait.

Residential lake with disgusting water. Their grey water use to go directly into the lake. I wouldn't anyways, but not a chance I'd eat a fish from this lake.

Got catfished twice yesterday morning.

For Us KC Area Guys - Fishing Reports
Wyandotte. Those fish are very much the exception to what you can expect to catch there. 90% of the bass in that lake are under 15", probably less than 1% are over 4 pounds, but they are in there. @Dirtyeggroll I hope you're happy, I ended up buying a KGB crappie because of you ?

The New Bunks Are On
If you unhook before backing down or pull up the ramp without cranking it up with the bow strap with those Ultimate Bunk Boards, you're just asking for trouble.

Bait Popping.. reach for the topwater?
Tons of bait with nothing around it this morning. A case of too much of a good thing I'm afraid.

Lure trendiness...
Remember when Teckel Sprinkers were selling for $80 each?? I stumbled into 3 of them for retail and kept them because I didn't want to miss out. Man I'd love to hit rewind and do that over again, I'd love to have the new rod or reel I could have bought for the money I'd made selling those 3 stupid frogs. They work, but what was I thinking??

Manhattan KS area fishing
Welcome! Not a ton of bass in the River Pond but it does have a lot of crappie. Pott 2 gets a lot of pressure but it has a bunch of fish if you can figure them out. We don't have anything like that for the farm ponds here. Make real sure you have permission to be on someone's property. There are some people who sign up their ponds/lakes/stream accesses for public access through the state. You can see the map of listed properties online or pick up a FISH atlas at Walmart and other stores for free. https://ksoutdoors.com/KDWPT-Info/Locations/Hunting-Fishing-Atlas/Fishing-Atlas http://ksdot.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=3e0ba6a852d2479aa6e384b4f87a0c2b

So, who makes the BEST Tubes?
My favorites are made by V&M, Strike King, Big Bite Baits, and YUM.
-
Beetle spin - anyone use different bodies?
I don't use the actual Beetle Spin, but I buy separate jig spinner arms (#0 or #1), and put them on a 1/16 or 1/32 ounce ball head with a 2" crappie tube. Fished on an ultralight and 4lb test, it'll catch about anything that swims.

Rod power and action for chatterbaits
This part of the quote is really confusing to me. What does having a glass rod have to do with keeping slack out of the line when a fish bites close to the boat? FWIW, I use a 6' 9" H/F and do alright with it.

When did green pumpkin become a thing?
I'd guess right around the same time the Senko blew up.

Hunting or Fishing?
I love going hunting, but I'd rather go fishing.

Large capacity baitcaster, but not a saltwater reel?
Okuma Citrix or Komodo have the capacity and major, lockdown drags to handle big fish.

Rage Menace or Rage Menace Magnum?
I've been commenting on their Facebook page since they came out with the regular Menace asking for a magnum version. Then they come out with a magnum and it's just a little fatter ?♂️ I was so excited thinking it was going to be like a 5.5-6 inch Menace with big flappers, disappointed is an understatement.

Am I the only guy who doesn't replace hooks?
My findings (literally, from the dozens of baits I find), show that most people roll with the stock hooks and they're in pretty rough shape a majority of the time. Some is obviously from weathering, but in the cases of baits that haven't been lost for long, I still find hooks that I wouldn't use for catfishing on hard baits. I don't trash the hooks I remove. Instead I save them, sorted by size. Every winter when I decide it's time to move all the baits I've found, I clean all the baits up and put new split rings up and whatever hooks I deem appropriate from the piles of hooks I've removed from other baits. They're brand new still, and someone who doesn't care if they're the best or sharpest hook out there, gets a new to them bait, with new hooks on it. I get why people don't change them, I never use to. I'm just at the point now where I spend too much time and effort into catching fish and trying to catch larger fish especially that I want to give myself every advantage possible. Those are great little baits. I love that smaller size for a finesse jerkbait in cold water, especially for ponds and clear water. I can't imagine trying to handle a redfish on those tiny treble hooks though. Wonder if you could find inline single hooks and replace them with those? They'd be a lot stouter I'm sure.
-
Fogy vs. Chatterbait Action
Yes I do. The trouble with double split rings is the issue with binding and getting them started after the cast. The rings will tend to twist and bind on each other during the cast and splash down and it can take a little work to get them started. They still work, but it's not my preferred method by a long shot.

Could have caught all these guys I wanted if I wasn't guiding Saturday morning. And this guy, what was he thinking? I mean, he's big for what he is, but come on.

Rage Menace or Rage Menace Magnum?
Regular Menace, the mag is more just for a stand alone bait IMO.
