  1. so i took the spool out and spool tensionknob off and cleaned/lubed it really well. when i put it all back together, the lure falls way too fast, which will cause backlash if i cast it. The spool tension knob is even as tight as it will go, but it still comes out too fast. i didn't take any small parts out, don't know what oculd be the cause. I put it back just like I always do. Maybe the spring is in upside down?
  2. I have 2 questions. 1) what in the world is that on the hook in picture 3? It looks like some type of insect as a trailer? 2) where did you get your round rubber and what size? I tie my own and have been suing the flat rubber but want the round rubber. Thanks
  3. if you are near hiram, definitely try nature's tackle box. they are/were the only place close you could get dobyn's rods and definitely have lures I can't find anywhere else.
  4. it won't let me put the name of the store, i'll pm you.
  5. i got them from ***. they are made by keitech. the heads are nice but the hook is not nearly as big as a standard jig head. i searched everywhere too looking for bigger hooks but couldn't find any. We'll see. I tie my own jigs and wanted to make bigger profile jigs to use fishing offshore structure and really feel everything. I'll post after I try them out this weekend. Oh, and they are not cheap!
  6. I received my tungsten football jig heads in the mail today. I'm anxious to tie me some skirts on the tonight and see how they do. I'm sure they will be really sensitive, that's the reason I got them. I am a little worried about the size of the hooks though. We'll see!
  7. I have the 7'MH for jigs, it is awesome. incredibly sensitive and Matt is a great guy. You won't be disappointed.
  8. thanks guys. i did watch the interview, he talked basically about reel setting the hook. i normally give a pretty good hook set. but zone talking about the reel hook set had me try to change BUT, most of my jigs are 3/8 to 1/2 oz. he said most of his were 3/4 to 1oz and i'm wondering if the extra weight is why he reel sets it, so the extra weight won't blow through the fishes mouth....just a thought.
  9. My next fishing trip, which will hopefuly be this weekend, will be JIGS ONLY! I spent last year trying to become proficient with jigs. I fish a 650 acre reservoir that is rarely fished, maybe 1 or 2 other boats each time I go. It is has BIG LM and is loaded with spots too. I always spent a good portion of my time fishing with jigs. When I say fishing jigs, i don't mean pitching/flipping. I mean fishing offshore humps, creek channels, points, etc. I did ok last year but still not thrilled. I even spent the winter tying my own. My next trip will be as follows: 1. Mop Jig: never caught a fish with it, really want to 2. Black/blue jig. I really want to see if this jig color gets as many bites as I hear. I did catch my biggest bass of 2011 on it (over 8lbs) 3. Standard football jig, crayfish colors/green pumpkin 4. Finess/ Flat top jig 5. Should I add another or just stick with these? I have learned a ton on this site about fishing jigs, although there isn't a ton of info on fishing offshore with jigs. Any tips would be greatly appreciated....including hooksets. I seem to lose a good many fish half way to the boat. Thanks!
  10. I've been looking for some tungsten heads to tie my jigs on. The one's from Keitech seem like they are too small, maybe geared towards creature baits and grubs. Anybody using these? I want tungsten for the extra feel on the bottom.
  11. I've been a big fan. fished it almost exlusively last year as jig trailers and produced my two biggest bass of the year. i have since been using rage craws to see what the noise is about, but i think i'm about o switch back.
  12. i would highly recommend Cashion Rods. I was a marshall for the Elite Series and two of the guys i fished with used them, one being a jig fishing afficianado. I bought the 7' MH for my jigs and I love it, very sensitive. Matt Cashion is great to deal with and will personally help you determine the best rod for you.
  13. 1. Dropshotted for the first time ever this year and caught more bass this year than ever. No giants off it, but great #'s. 2. When i thought there were good bass holding where the drop shot was working, i threw a shakey head and did well. 3. I REALLY wanted to fish jigs a lot this year. I started tying my own and used them every time out. Caught enough to get some confindence, but still haven't gotten confidence fishing jigs offshore. Don't know if I'm too fast, too slow, or just in the wrong place. I really want to get confidence in offshore jig fishing.
  14. Finally got a chance to use the sellus dropshot rod. Really impressed with it, more than i expected. The bite was way more detectable and way more sensitive than what i had been using. I think i may pick up another one for shakey head.
  15. I picked one up this weekend for dropshotting. I'm also going to try it for shakey heads. Hope to get it out this week. For $49 it seemed like a good deal, we'll see.
  16. h20, i actually have a humminbird smartcast rf15 that works great. i just got a boat so i was about to list it on ebay to sell, if you would like it, i can seel it to you. everything works great. they retail for $135-150 bucks, i'll sell it for $100.00. used it one season. just pm me if you need more info.
  17. funny you mention this. i was a bass marshall earlier this year for a certain well known pro that will remain nameless. I had been lookikng for a new rod for jigs and noticed he had a verdict with a shaky head on it. I asked him if he liked the verdict and if it would be good for jigs, he said quote "hell no, biggest piece or S&^t i've ever seen, i've broken at least 10 of them". About and hour later, he broke another one. He used the veritas for his moving baits, spinner baits etc, but not for anything requiring any feel. I asked if he liked the veritas, his reply "at least they don't break!".
  18. Wayne, thanks for the great info, I'm definitely going to try that. One of the best parts of having gps/lake maps is the contours/topo of the lake. I'm really trying to get into offshore structure fishing and without contours, you're really not at full potential.
  19. So I'm looking at buying a fishfinder with GPS to fish a local 600 acre reservoir. There are no lake maps available, and I don't even know if GPS would help me. If the lake is not in the memory of the GPS, does it show up? The lake is about 5 years old, so I don't even know if it would show up on the GPS as a lake? Of course, i guess the only way to find out would be to buy one and then take it out on the lake, but if not, i'm out some serious money.
  20. I was a Marshall for the Elite Series at West Point back in May and had a blast. I have been shpping for the perfect jig rod and thought I had decided on a Dobyns, until I marshalled the tournament. On the 2nd day, i marshalled for Pat Golden, who was as good as a guy as they come. I also fished with another well known pro the first day that used a Cashion rod for his jig fishing, but I can't give his name and he was sponsored by another rod company. Anyways, Pat fished Cashion Rods exclusively and I was definitely intrigued with the technology. I picked one up about a month ago, Matt Cashion was great to deal with. I got the 7'MH,F for jigs and texas rigs. This rod is so sensitive, it feels like a lightning rod when a fish hits. The best rod I had prior to this was a Falcon Lowrider that i thought was sensitive. But this rod is amazing. Plenty of backbone and can feel everything going on, which I definitely needed fishing jigs. The link to the rods is below, if you have any questions, i'll do my best to answer them. http://cashionrods.com/
  21. I've got 2 calcutta's and absolutely love them. i use them both for bass and saltwater fishing and couldn't be happier. Tough as hell and DVT can really make them smooth, tough, and bulletproof for you.
  22. I just marshalled the elite series at West Point, and one of the guys I marshalled for was Pat Golden. He wan an absolute stand-up guy and a great fisherman as well. He fished Cashion rods exclusively and I just ordered one for jigs/texas rigs. I'm hoping to get it in the mail today and will let you guys know what I think. Anybody else try them?
  23. I finally got my hands on the dobyns rods and was really impressed. I handled the 703and 704C in the store. The 704 really didn't seem that "heavy" of an action. My question, for light cover jig fishing, mostly 3/8 oz and T-rigs, which rod would be best? It's so hard to tell in stores and i don't know a soul that has one to try on the water. Any help would be appreciated.
  24. i actually purchased a white jig, with some light blue in it. i haven't fished it. I could see where a swimming jig would work, would you think a white bottom jig would work?
