  1. ... and I file most of that lead shank off the Big John jigs. oe
  2. If I might ask... what is the advantage your jig has over the existing Brewer jig selection? oe
  3. The Gopher "Big John" jighead works very well with 4" grubs. oe
  4. If the bearing is working properly I would disregard the sound and leave it as is for now. oe
  5. My opinion: Lower priced non-scented baits were added to Berkley's line when Pure Fishing was sold to a holding company that didn't understand Berkley's history or care about the direction of product development... Many good long-time products have been dropped rather than promoted. oe
  6. You don't write whether you have any other rods or not... If you don't already have a medium power spinning rod buy one. If you do own a medium power spinning rod, a medium light power spinning rod will be a nice compliment to it. oe
  7. jika rig... oe
  8. After several dives to retrieve spinning gear, I'm planning to buy a spin-cast reel for my grand kids to use (9,7,5 & 4); pretty sure braid doesn't work well in these reels so what test nylon mono is most trouble free in a spin-cast reel. oe
  9. This spot on the split ring will provide the MOST abrasion to the line. I prefer tying the line directly opposite on the ring to where you proposed. oe
  10. Been using 20lb Ultra 8 with an Abu Premier chucking spinnerbaits this summer. It needs a long afternoon of casting/retrieving >1/2oz spinnerbaits to break in, but then I found it to be a good line for the intended purpose I chose it for. I've been catching lots of <30" pike with zero bite offs... I guess this could just be due to my superb angling skills, but probably not. oe
  11. Rig it on a spinnerbait... oe
  12. OP, you're looking for more opinions, so I'll add mine... heed A-Jay's advice. I've owned my 16' aluminum boat for +30 years and nearly everyday of those 30 years there has been a plastic milk crate containing a 25lb. fluke anchor with 4' of the heaviest log chain I could find in my community and 100' of 3/4" diameter nylon rope -- bright yellow. Total weight of that filled milk crate -- 40lbs. I've weighed it. There's plenty of blood stains from my hands on that rope, but the milk crate stays in my boat. I've added a Terrova with spot-lock to my old boat, but the milk crate is still there. Its harder jumping in and out of my boat than 30 years ago, but I've never left the dock without that milk crate aboard. Don't heed A-Jay's advice on my account... heed it on Brett's account! By the way; I also carry 3 well used wind socks of various sizes and an extra coat, sweat shirt and pair of jeans on board. oe
  13. How well a spinnerbait fishes with a spinning rod/reel depends upon how heavy the spinnerbait is and how heavy the spinning rod power is. Mating a 3/4 oz spinnerbait with #6 blades with a medium power spinning rod doesn't fish efficiently. Casting spinnerbaits in the +1/2oz range is much easier with a baitcasting rod/reel than a spinning outfit. oe
  14. or... you could strip part of the Spiderwire you currently have spooled and use the rest as a backing line for the PowerPro. oe
  15. Does it work weighing bass not caught with a Senko? oe
  16. Paneling nails inserted into the fluke. Clip to the length you want and insert into the fluke. Location of insertion will allow fine tuning of bait fall. oe
  17. No, I don't think rod sensitivity is over-rated... I do think rod BALANCE is often under-rated. Why do you think that a 150.00 rod would not be sensitive? oe
  18. I'd continue to lobby your wife to accept a med. power baitcasting rod. You'll find a spinning rod in my hands a large share of any fishing day except when tossing spinnerbaits and most top water baits. oe
  19. Just to be a contrarian... I prefer fishing plastic in weeds using a weighted swimbait hook. I like the horizontal fall. oe
  20. Since you're fishing brackish water, CONSIDER lubing all of the parts inside of your spinning reel with Penn's blue marine grease... inside walls of the body, gears, bearings, (and screw threads) everything greased very LIGHTLY. Also consider removing the spool and rinsing it thoroughly under the tap after each use. I don't think oiling the bearings of a spinning reel is important if you are using a light grease in its place... just my very un-professional opinion. oe
  21. My position is, and has been, this theory is completely valid. I also hold the belief that Fireline is braided and remains the best behaved fishing line for spinning reels, and that color preference by bass is a function of visibility against the visual background, but I got tired of arguing about it years ago... oe
  22. I would argue with you about this theory being "semi-valid"... oe
  23. I love it when a plan comes together... oe
  24. I'm quite ugly... daytime, I fish from my boat solo with my hat brim pulled down -- after dark, from shore I sometimes draw a crowd while landing hefty walleye. Go figure! oe
