fishing a soft bottom lake
Bass are not free-spawners like pike & muskies, therefore their eggs require at least marginal oxygenation. The reason buck bass sweep away muck and mire is to reach the firm subsoil beneath that gives the eggs better circulation. Lakes that appear to have mud bottom throughout will generally have sections of firm substrate beneath the mud. If these areas can be found, you'll likely be dealing with lake sections with the best population density. The easiest way to find firm subsoil is indirectly. Look for places that support bulrushes, lily pads and the like, which do not thrive in poor soil. Sand is the preferred soil for a bedding flat, but if need be, bass will spawn over bottoms of clay and marl. However, when forced to settle for silt or muck, the nest will likely fail. Roger

Questions for Manabu
Monetary gain is the underlying goal of "spectator sports" such as football and baseball. With respect to "participant sports" like hunting and fishing, money moves in the opposite direction, where our rewards come from the thrill of the hunt and victory. Fortunately, being the holder of a world-record fish is a reward that money can't buy. Roger

what line do you prefer
I've used monofilament line for about 50 years, but since 2006 I've been hooked on braid :-[ Roger

Question: Spinning vs. Baitcasting
I agree with Randy. First decide on the tackle you prefer (spinning or casting) then select the tackle-class required. Roger

color c lector
It's fair to say that most anglers believe that 'lure color' brings up the rear. As a result, the importance of the "Color-C-Lector" really hinges on the importance an angler attaches to color. To my mind, color is important only inasmuch as it adds or subtracts to lure "visibility". In other words, once a fish sees your lure, the importance of color falls through the cracks. To that end, the Color-C-Selector was designed to select the most visible color shades under the current lighting conditions, but I'm not aware of any study that confirms its accuracy. Roger

Snaps? Anyone use them?
Though it would be nice, the "most" lure action does not automagically equate to the "best" lure action. The best lure action hinges on seasonal period, temperature trend, local weather, et al. In any case, I try to keep a snap on one of my fishing outfits at all times to satisfy the emergent need for quick-change and to encourage lure experimentation. Roger

Unorthodox techniques?
I'm sure that most of my bass fishing techniques could be pigeonholed as "unconventional". The beauty of our sport is that nothing is carved in stone, where heterodox is the norm. (Stay flexible and experiment). Roger

The Girl That Saved The Day
Hi Chris Lois and I moved from Lake Walk-In-Water (Lake Wales, FL) to Lake Pierce (Lake Wales, FL). The move had nothing to do with fishing (fee simple vs. lot rent <> excellent net access vs. marginal net access) As luck would have it, our home base is now more strategically located, and is kind of midway between Kissimmee, Toho, Walk-In-Water, Crooked Lake and others. More importantly, it's great hearing from you again Chris, I miss your positive presence on the boards. Roger

The Girl That Saved The Day
Thank you fellows for your kind words Matt, I know your plate is already full, but I'd love to see you introduce a soft swimbait for the Atlantic-side. 6-inch Soft Swimbait Weedless Shiner-Profile 8-) Roger

Questions for Manabu
Kudos Matt, you are certainly an 'IN' fisherman! I'd be curious to know about the most productive water depth and vegetation in Lake Biwa. Roger

Can't decide on new reel
[quote author=67373536040 link=1271947696/15#15 date=1271999944You are correct, the Revo is linear magnetic with 6-pin centrifugal I should've said centrifugal-only versus dual-braking. This reminds me of Burleytog's comment on the need for hybrids, he called them "Training Wheels" ;D Roger

UPDATED 5/5/2010 Shad poppin, bass jumping, can't get strike?
Assuming they are bass and assuming they are shad, the bass have plenty of food at their disposal. We read a lot about matching the size & color of the prey, but that's rarely worked for me. IMO delivery is the key, and as others have suggested, try working the lure so it looks slower and easier to catch than the main school body. Roger

river musky help...
I'm not too familiar with the musky fishing in West Virginia, but read that the stockings in Buckhannon river & New River have been highly successful. Based on the musky clubs in New York (St Lawrence Area), "big musky plugs" have been the top producers. However, in the Hayward District of Wisconsin, "in-line bucktail spinners" have yielded the most pounds. The musky is an apex predator, so "trolling" is generally preferred due to the coverage it offers. Read everything Larry Dahlberg writes on muskies, he cranks them up like their gumdrops. Location of course, depends on seasonal period. Roger

Can't decide on new reel
Though it gets very little use, I own a Shimano Citica and like it much (like the Curado better). Revo makes a fine drag system, but I personally prefer centrifugal brakes to magnetic brakes. My only beef is max drag: Revo 22 lbs / Citica 10 lbs Roger

Anyone still using their older equipment?
When I was about 5 yrs old (mid 1940s), I cut my teeth in saltwater with a metal fishing pole and rusty baitcasting reel. In freshwater, dad beamed me up to a green glass Shakespeare rod with an archaic Garcia baitcasting reel (just a rudimentary revolving drum). My fishing world really didn't begin until my first spinning outfit which I purchased with allowance money. I choose a blue Conolon rod and a black Mitchell 300 cap...I was in Heaven! No, I'm not using any of that equipment today, and haven't the slightest idea where it's gone. Roger

Fighting Bass. Tip up, or down?
I'm with you. Maybe I'm sick, but everytime the bass wins I feel a sense of calm and equality. Roger Haha really?if I have a little one come off i laugh and don't care, if a good 2 and a half to 3 pounder comes off tis like awwww man, and if a pig comes off its **** *** ****************! and then i start making really fast casts and my mind replays it about a thousand times That being the case, I'd suggest that you keep that rod-tip DOWN to maximize water resistance. ;D You will notice that Mister Dance holds his rod-tip around 12:30 o'clock, because his sponsors prefer to see aerial acrobatics, and Bill delivers. Rod Sensitivity
This may fly in the face of convention, but my judgment is usually off-base in a store-setting, and prefer to base my decision on the tensile modulus specified by the manufacturer. Sensitivity comes at a price, and if the price isn't there, neither is the sensitivity. Though rarely mentioned, one of the cheapest ways to enhance sensitivity is to move from monofilament to braid ("mono" includes nylon, fluorocarbon & copolymer). Roger

Wacky rigged Fluke?
Haven't caught anything on it yet, done it a few times, but man oh man you should see that magnum when wacky rigged it just screams eat me! Hook the bait in the upper two thirds, closer to the head, stick the hook through the back and make the point come out the side. The falcon k-wacky weedless hooks fit it pretty good too. The Falcon K is one hook I had in mind along with the Owner SSW short-shank (model 5180). Thus far I've done reasonably well with a "nose-hooked" 7" magnum, but must admit that most of the takers were lesser bass. I believe that Florida is at the crossroads right now, as spent cows are beginning to feed again (best is yet to come). Roger
