What Brad said I do not like long rods, because you've got more power with a short rod. Be that as it may, a long MH rod is an asset when frogging. During the hookset, moving a lot of line quickly is even more important than power. As for braided line (i.e. PowerPro), it's almost cheating. Roger
  2. > Milk is more expensive than gasoline Well, you just have to adjust to a situation. No more milk...Now I'm burning "gas" in my cars 8-) Roger
  3. Dogs can detect odor that is FAR beyond human perception, yet some odors that are offensive to humans, are not to dogs. Bass are sight-feeders, and their absence of chin-barbels is evidence that they lack an acute sense-of-smell. After a liberal application of commercial scent, assuming that a bass smells anything at all, it may be totally unrelated to the applied scent and to the angler's intended illusion. Roger

Birds fly. Rabbits hop. Squirrels rustle. Deer tip toe quieter than an assasin. Come to think of it, the only thing that walks is people :-/ ;D Kudos to you hookemdown. For starters, that phrase isn't even mildly humorous, but what's even worse, it casts an ugly light on a beautiful sport! Roger
  7. Thanks Raul By the way, most people know that Jackie Robinson was the first black man in baseball, but not as many know that Elston Howard was the first black New York Yankee. In the 1950s, there was a very popular kids game in Jersey we called "Shooting Cards". A simple game, you hold a baseball card between your thumb and forefinger and flip it against the baseboard. The idea was to get a "leaner" that rested between the wall and the floor, or to get a "topper", a card that lands on one of your opponents cards (okay stop laughing, this was the pre-computer era). Back then, a pack of 5 baseball cards and a slice of gum cost a buffalo nickel. The goal of us kids of course was to collect the whole set of baseball cards. Between what I bought and what I won "shooting cards", I had the entire set of 1952 baseball cards less about 5 or 6 cards!! After I was married a few years, I was visiting my mom and went downstairs to rummage through my old hunting den. Though I found a lot of stuff that I'd forgotten about, I could not find my "valuable" set of 1952 baseball cards. You guessed it, to my mother it was just a cardboard box full of old baseball cards :'( (Oh The PAIN!). Roger
  8. Bassn Blvd, you make an excellent point! After a 3-day blow out of the eastern hemisphere, the Gulf stream, sargasso, plankton & prey fish have all been pushed closer to the beach. Following the good stuff eastward will be most of the pelagic fish like dolphin, bluefish, sharks, tuna & mackerel. In any case, you are correct and I agree with you, but not every salter would be out in that stuff Roger
  9. That is really a golden shiner Roger
  10. In my opinion, the "pointer", "rattlin rogue" and "X-rap" are the three best Suspending Jerkbaits. They're so close in fact, that depending on the situation they're all Numero Uno Roger

  13. Muddy, During the mid-50s (I was about 12 years old), Phil Rizzuto was the greatest shortstop throughout HIS era in baseball. What came later is a whole other ballgame. BTW: Ozzie Smith was born in 1954, so if he made the Big Time by 1959, he was only 5 years old! Roger
  14. Tuesday 2:15pm Phil Rizzuto lived across the street from my brother George in Hillside, New Jersey (Westminster section). Moments ago the press was over at my brother's house asking him a barrage of questions about his neighbor Phil. When I was young boy living in Hillside, NJ (during the 50s), there were "THREE" New York baseball teams: New York Yankees (Yankee Stadium) - Brooklyn Dodgers (Ebbets Field) - New York Giants (Polo Grounds). I've been to all of them of course, but I was a dyed-in-the-wool New York Yankees fan. When the Dodgers and Giants pulled out of New York I stopped following baseball. Phi Rizzuto was a little Yankee nicknamed "Scooter" for his ability to steal bases. He was the uncontested greatest Shortstop in baseball, and for all I know, he may still hold that title. The Scooter played alongside the greatest Yankee team ever, Just for kicks, I'm going to try to re-create the Yankee team of the 50s (any help is welcome): JOE DIMAGGIO Center Fielder PHIL RIZZUTO Shortstop YOGI BERRA Catcher HANK BAUER ? JERRY COLEMAN First Baseman JOHNNY MIZE ? GENE WOODLING ? VIC RASCHII Pitcher ALLEY REYNOLDS Pitcher BOB PORTERFIELD Pitcher WHITEY FORD Pitcher ELSTON HOWARD MICKEY MANTLE Center Fielder BILLY MARTIN Second Baseman Roger
  15. I Totally Agree. My wife's fillets are larger and neater than mine, and nary a bone. Yet, at the end of a crappie outing, she says the same thing everytime, "I'll empty the boat hun, because you make nicer fillets than me". Yeah, Right! Roger
  16. Black Shad - Red Shad - Watermelon - Green Pumpkin FLAKES? I know what colors "I" prefer, but I'm not convinced they serve any useful purpose (that is, beyond the manufacturer). Roger
  17. I find it easier with a spinning setup. LOL!!!!! I have no opinion on that, because I've "never" tried walking-the-dog with baitcasting gear....Can That Really Be Done? :-/ Roger
  18. Sorry, but when I looked at that striking image of milfoil, my very first thought was MUSKELLUNGE!! There are plenty of lures that can get inside a milfoil weed-bed, but that's not exactly where you want to be. Unlike hydrilla, which provides a labyrith of caverns, milfoil is a feathery, unbranched plant growing in single strands. Milfoil is reminiscent of the Christmas garland we hung on the tree, except that milfoil "collapses" when it's removed from water. In my opinion, the key to fishing milfoil is working the "periphery" of the weed bed, here are four approaches: 1. First Choice: Work the "deep weed-line" (in clear water the milfoil weed-line may be 15 ft+ deep) Work just outside the W/L 2. Work defined "pockets" in the milfoil even w/o the deep weed-line (points & fingers are okay, but funneling pockets are best) 3. Work the "open corridor" between the top of the weed-bed and the water surface (Zoom fluke, Rat-L-Trap, Swimbait, Spinnerjig) 4. Milfoil loves to form surface canopies. In this situation the Gambler cane toad will do business. (Lots of fun, but a last resort). Roger
  19. I might buy that, if you lived on the Pacific coast, but you said "on the Atlantic". Either you never made it out of the bay, or you've got a fetish for waves wearing White Hats ;D Roger
  20. The key to walking-the-dog is making certain that there's always some slack in the line, except during the instant of the jerk. You must have slack line immediately "before" and immediately "after" each jerk...that's all she wrote. In my opinion, the Super Spook Jr. is the King of walkers This might sound obscene, but I do not like the LC Sammy at all. It costs more ($5 vs. $15), but it is not as good. The tail-weighted Sammy was supposedly designed to simplify walking-the-dog, but in reality it loused it all up. During each pause, the Sammy assumes an unnatural vertical position....to me it looks like a Minnow Float. From that ridiculous submerged position the Sammy generates too much water resistance to get a clean skating action. Just my $0.02 Roger
  21. There are three major variables: 1. Subspecies (northern-strain or Florida-strain) 2. Latitude (Florida or Ontario?) 3. Forage Base On balance, it'll take 7 years to grow a 5-lb largemouth bass (10 yrs in northern U.S. <> 4 yrs Florida) Roger
  22. My boat only has one side! Not a problem though. After boating a fish, I always rotate the boat 180 degrees before the release : Roger
  23. Johnson Silver Minnow 8-)
  24. You know, that Cencoe thing
  25. I don't believe that Catt alluded to any specific study, but what he stated about the plastic worm is true. In fact, in every large-scale, long-term comparison that I have ever read, the "plastic worm" was the undisputed King. As an outgrowth of their unparalleled success, manufacturers have done many things to the plastic worm. It all began with a straight rubber worm called the Creme Scoundrel (~1950), but now we've got stick worms (stocky straight worm) floating worms, shaky worms, worms with ridges, with ribbontails, with paddletails, with tassel-tails, you name it, you got it. They're not fooling anyone though; any long, slender, cylindrical soft-plastic lure is still a "worm". During Florida's heyday, I was still living in Jersey but I was a very nosy kid to put it mildly : With the kind permission of several lodge owners in Florida, I thumbed through "many" registers and photo logs (taking notes). The story was the same on Lake Lochloosa, Rodman Pool, Salt Springs Run, Lake Jackson, Withlacoochee River, et al. The plastic worm was the clear winner on every water. I spoke with Chet Westergard, then owner of the world renowned South Shore Fish Camp on Orange lake. Chet told me that during winter and early spring, minnows were "thee" bait, but throughout the summer he said, "plastic worms" routinely outfished live minnows! Some things never change Roger
