Zoom fluke questions
My best success has always been with an unweighted, T-rigged Super Fluke on a lightweight hook. A lighter hook (15-grain area) allows the Fluke to sink very slowly during each pause. In other words, it helps the Fluke behave more like a suspending jerkbait. It seems the Fluke has lost press to the maze of new upstarts, but is still the killer it's always was. Roger

Lure color experience
Whenever I hear how much one color dramatically outperformed another color, the same thought enters my mind. If anglers were colorblind, it would force them to reach conclusions based on more important variables. Roger

Net storage while fishing?
We stash the hoop in the slot formed between the seat and gunwale, which holds the hoop edgewise and out of the way, but exposes the handle for a quick grab. Roger

Lure color experience
It's almost impossible to compare lure colors, because the most important variables, are the least visible. > John shakes his rod-tip lightly as he retrieves, but Bob adds no action...Is anyone watching? > John is using lighter line than Bob, and his lure runs a little deeper...Is that visible? > John is using a slower gear ratio than Bob, and his lure moves a little slower...Is that visible? John outfishes Bob 3 to 1, but the reason is blatantly obvious! John's lure is 'black with red flakes', but Bob's lure is 'brown with green flakes' DUH Roger

Benefit of a Fast Taper?
The faster the action, the stiffer the tip The slower the action, the softer the tip FASTER TIP > Greater Sensitivity Finesse retrieves - Non-crank intervals > Quicker spine access Hauling fish quickly out of cover > Quicker Hook-set Mat-punching, Flipping ~ SLOWER TIP > Longer casting distance (more blank-loading) > Reduced line-slack when fighting > Reduced tear-offs when fighting Roger

Do you think fish know how big they are
The most extreme examples I've seen of fish attacking oversize prey involved Yellow Perch. I've caught many perch on large pike lures; little fellows with big egos. It's tough to prove whether large baits attract more large fish, or large baits discourage more small fish. In either case, the result would be a higher mean weight Roger

Craw modifications
Long ago, I heard the notion that some bass are intimidated by large mandibles, something I dismissed as a silly human reaction. Since then however, I’ve watched a number of underwater videos of standoffs between a bass and a crayfish. In a surprisingly number of cases, the craw either outmaneuvered the bass or counterattacked with formidably positioned claws, ultimately causing the bass to abandon chase and concede to an easier meal. In the bass's world, I doubt that fear plays much of a role, but it makes you wonder about the fence cases...bass that were previously engaged in a similar bout. No big deal of course, but we're always trying to play the odds. All that said, I agree with the long antennae concept, particularly as a substitute for oversize claws. That might explain the success of the 'tube', in essence a clawless craw. Roger

I'm just a big kid, so that's right up my alley. Anyone who believes a Beetle Spin is too small, has never met the Ned Rig. Roger

Run&Gun or Low&Slow
I didn’t elaborate in my post above, because there isn’t enough time nor space Realistically, it doesn’t matter whether you approach your fishing spots at 3 mph with oars, or at 70 mph with a Yamaha 150. You might spend 2 hours at one spot, but only 10 casts at the next spot, that's a flexible variable based on current conditions and current events. In my opinion, the most important variable is HOW you select your fishing sites (i.e. paper route). Roger

BIG FISH ON TOP, NO BITES
It's an excellent bet that they are not bass, and a good bet that they are carp. Roger

Run&Gun or Low&Slow
Before an outing, I spend a great deal of time studying bathymetric charts & satellite imagery. When I'm on the water, I treat every trial site as a holding site, and have no interest in scatter-gunning. This is always the case, even if the lake is 1000 miles away, and I've never fished there before. Roger

Abu ambassadeur 4600 being used for musky?
So many vintage musky records have been proven fraudulent, that the World Musky Alliance wiped the slate clean. In 2006, the World Musky Alliance formed a new organization they named the "Modern-Day World-Record Musky Program" (MDMWRP). Six years later, the first musky was finally entered as the Modern-Day World-Record Muskellunge. The serpent weighed 58-lbs, measured 58" long, and was taken from Lake Bellaire, MI on Oct 13, 2012 by Joe Seeberger. Here's the best part. Joe Seeberger was not fishing for muskies, he was fishing for smallmouth bass. After a grueling ordeal, the 58-lb beast was finally landed on a Med Power Spinning Gear with 8-lb line. Let's hear for Spinning Tackle Roger

Reaction Innovations
Assuming that "Sweet Beaver" got its name from the owner's success at "Beaver Lake"; the owner had a 2nd remarkable success, when he hired a sales manager who baited a myriad of fishermen. Roger

Is it true that after June Smallmouth move to 20-25 ft of water?
In the Great Lakes, bronzebacks commonly range from 15 to 50 ft deep. In your shallow brook, those depths are probably divisible by 10 That is: 1.5 ft to 5 ft Roger

Dead Weeds?
I don't believe that mobile weed patches should be too threatening. However, stagnant mats of deteriorating vegetation would deplete dissolved oxygen in that spot. If oxygen levels were to reach critical levels, the bass would then be forced into shallow water, especially where green vegetation may be found. In any case, good luck with that. Roger
