Transmission Oil
i borrowed the special pump to change the oil on my bass boat.... but on this small motor, i dont think i need the same tool.... i just took apart the lower unit to replace a seal, since the oil had a little water in it.... you say "Quickest way in the world to ruin something is to not know what you are doing and try to do it anyway" but i prefer this quote: "what we need to learn how to do, we learn by doing it"... i do all my jeeps maintenance, electrical, mechanical, cosmetical..... all i have done to it, i had to learn while doing it... sure, sometimes i would ruin something, but at least now i know how to do it, or how NOT to do it.... so hopefully tomorrow i will get the seal and put together the lower unit, and have the boat running by the weekend....

Transmission Oil
thanx. thats the way we did it with the big motor, but we used a special pump. with this small motor, can i turn the motor upsdide down, so i can fill the oil from the bottom hole, wich now will be the top hole as the motor is upsides down?? i mean, i know i have to put the oil in the hole close to the propeller. if i turn it upside down, this hole will be the top hole, so i would be able to put the oil without a special pump, just by gravity. when the oil starts coming out of the hole closer to the motor (top hole when the motor is upright) i will close both holes. is there a problem if i do this?? and, what grade oil do i need??

I want to change the oil, but im not really sure how to do it.... on our bass boat, i used a special pump that i borrowed from the local fishing shop. but on this small motor, i think i can just turn the motor upside down and pour oil in it?? also, what oil should i use?? 90 transmission fluid??

Fishing As A Team
thanx Tallent. from what i have seen, local clubs make tournaments but they invite the other clubs, and they also invite people who is not in a club... so basically, there are 5 tournaments this season, each one of them organized by a different club... we have 3 major lakes relatively close (2-3 hour drive) so, 2 lakes will host 2 tournaments, and 1 lake will only host 1.... but they 5 will be organized by different clubs.... the lake i am fishing right now is only 20 minutes from my house... its small, and doesnt really has a lot of big fish, but i think its a good way to learn, since i can go every weekend, and even though i havent done it, i am planning on going after work too... i caught a 1.5 lb bass this saturday, and i know there are bigger fish there.... not really trophys, but fun anyways.... and i am asking about tournament fishing because theres a tournament on the last weekend of july, and we would like to go, most of all to know the other people, and learn how tournaments work.... but, if we can have a little advice, i think we could make it much more enjoyable....

Fishing As A Team
well, maybe when we become more proficient fishing and get used to the lakes around here, we will have a pattern established... and Grey Wolf, how do clubs work?? we are not even in the US, i know there are fishing clubs in my city, but i dont know how they work... since we have a lot of other things to do, right now we plan on fishing every saturday morning, and sometimes sundays too, and by 10 am we are back home to do some other things....

Fishing As A Team
thanx. since we are both learning, i guess we will learn more or less the same at the same time... so, for instance, if you are looking for fish, does each one uses a different lure of the same type (like 2 spinnerbaits in different colors) or is it better for one to use a spinnerbait and the other one a crankbait, and then when one begins catching fish, the other one switches to the same lure??

Fishing As A Team
hey. this season i want to learn how to fish. so far i have been going out every saturday morning since the season opened, 3 times so far. i go out with a friend who is also learning. when we go, we have a friendly competition. however, we plan on entering a couple of local tournaments. so i want to know, how do you fish as a team?? i mean, maybe one uses a lure and the other one uses another thing, and if one starts getting strikes, the other one changes to the same lure?? or, do you do it just as if you were fishing on your own?? is there really a difference?? we are fishing out of an old bass boat, im driving from one point to the other, he drives the trolling motor when we get there...

Bass Or Carp??
thanx!! i think ill try to catch some of them next time... i just got home from the lake, i caught my first "decent" bass today... around 1 1/2 lb.... last week i decided to bring corn or dough next time i went out, and that time was today, but i am just so determined to learn how to catch bass, that i dont want to loose time with carp.... so today, i didnt bring any dough, but i saw a lot of carp jumping again... some of them jumped close to the boat, and i could see they were carp... a lot of other fish jumped too far to recognize them, but i am assuming most of them are also carp.... maybe next time i will try to catch one... how is the fight compared to that of a bass?? and how do you fish them, just throw the hook and wait for them to bite? thanx!!

Livewell
thanx, ill clean them with bleach and see what happens....
-
Livewell
hey. i just got an old bass boat and i am just setting it up... it has a couple of livewells, but i dont know how to prepare them to make them safe for the fish. one of them is full of charcoal, and the other one was used to store the anchor and a couple big metal bolts, so it has some rust spots. so, after removing everything and cleaning them, what else should i do?? is there a soap i should use/avoid?? any other chemical i should use to clean them, or stay away from?? btw the pumps work well, i already tested them... i just need to clean the tanks... thanx!!

Small Hooks??
i dont know what size they are... im a beginner fisherman, so, i think ill try them the way they are, assuming, as someone mentioned, that the designer considered it was the optimal choice... then maybe when i get more experiece and knowledge, i will be able to determine if that size is what i need/want... thanx!

Bass Or Carp??
thanx. i heard of making a dough with white bread and coca cola, and then add smashed fruit loops... i just confirmed with a local fisher that there are a lot of carp in the lake... so, how do they fight? i guess fishing for them is not as fun, since you just throw the dough and wait, but i think ill try it next time im there...

Bass Or Carp??
thanx for the responses... i really dont want to fish for carp, but i thought if i throw something for them, i will be able to tell if they are carp, or bass and i just dont know how to catch them....

Questions On Roof Racks And Cargo Boxes.
well, i dont really know how to attach a rack to a car.... if you are willing to drill the roof, its easy =) otherwise, what i would do is check for commercial racks for the car, and then copy the system they use to hold it in place... dont be afraid to do it, metal is metal, even if it has the Warn logo in it, its still metal, theres no reason why you cannot do it yourself... if you dont weld, you can always learn! i got my welder for about $250, with what i have done for my and some friend's jeeps, it has payed for itself several times now....

Bass Or Carp??
thanx. so, how do you fish northern pike?? i dont even know what they are.... BTW, im located in Mexico, 3 hours south of El Paso, Texas...

Bass Or Carp??
hey. i went fishing yesterday morning. at 5:30 am i was leaving my house, and at 6 am we were already on the boat... the sun was just rising, and we were the first boat in the lake... after a short ride, we stopped at a shallow shore.... as the sun rose, a lot of fish were jumping... sometimes we would see the entire fish, sometimes they just got their heads out of the water, sometimes we just listened to them... i think we saw about 50 fish... at about 8 am, the jumping stopped... we would see an occasional fish jumping here and there, but it was not so frequent, until it stopped completely at mid morning... however, we couldnt land (or boat) a single fish.... we began using topwaters, then mid depth white crankbaits, then yellow spinnerbaits, plastic worms in different colors.... but we didnt catch a single fish... this is a hard lake, being so close to the city, it has a lot of pressure, and there are not so many bass in the place.... so, i began wondering, maybe the fish we saw were carp?? i know some of them were, because we saw them, but a lot of fish we couldnt identify... so, is there a way of telling based on how they jump?? i mean, maybe carp jump all the way out, while bass only raise their head to catch something with their mouths.... im going there again next weekend, or maybe during the week in the afternoon, what should i bring to try to catch a carp?? i used to fish when i was about 12, but i am trying to pick it up again... this is my third time out to the same lake, and i have only fished one 5" bass last weekend... so, any advice will be greatly appreciated!! thanx!!

Small Hooks??
hey. i just got some of these: http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Tourney-Crankbait/product/10225050/-632862 and they seem to have really small hooks, way smaller than other lures i have... is that normal?? or should i change them to bigger hooks? i dont want fish to be able to spit my lures, so i dont know if i should use them as they are... thanx!

Storing Plastic Worms
hey. how do you store your plastic worms?? i used to leave them in the bag they came, and put the bags in my tackle box. but i just replaced the box for a tackle bag and some Bass Pro 370 storage boxes. im using one box for spinnerbaits, one for crankbaits, but i dont know how to do it with the plastic worms. right now i have one box with worms and the other one with lizards, but all of them are still in the bags. also, since i had some space left in both boxes, i also have hooks in both boxes. i bought 2 packs of hooks from 3 different sizes (6 packs total) and placed 1 pack from each size in each box. this way, when i decide to use worms or lizards, i have the hooks and the plastics in the same box. does this makes any sense?? should i keep the plastics inside the bags? or should i put them directly in the compartments of the storage boxes, just making sure the dont mix with eachother?? and should i use a single box for hooks and sinkers?? im new to this bag thing, i had always used tackle boxes, and im returniong to fishing after a long time, so basically i have a lot to learn....

Questions On Roof Racks And Cargo Boxes.
i forgot to add. some vehicles have different ways of attaching the roof rack.. in a jeep for example, some roof racks have posts that come all the way down to the bumpers... this makes them stronger than one bolted to the roof.... so, in what vehicle do you plan on installing the rack??
-
Questions On Roof Racks And Cargo Boxes.
if you have any welding skills, making a rack is really easy, and really cheap.... it depends on what vehicle you are installing it, but you can always look at the original and then copy them.... in the end, any rack is just welded steel... i have made racks, bumpers, tire carriers, for jeeps, and they hold just as well as any factory made product... for a fraction of the cost... last rack i made was only $30 and materials and an afternoon in the shop.... and i have been using it for 2 years without a problem....

Transmission For A 77 Johnson, 85 Hp
what do you mean by more notches?? the clutch dog seems to be tsymetrical... and we are not changing the gears... front gear will still be front gear, only the clutch dog, the part that previously contacted the rear gear, will now contact the front, as we turned it 180 degrees in the shaft.... and NBR, we could do that, but i think it would be expensive.... if thats the only way to go, we will have to do it, but we are looking for other options first.... how much does a mid 80s, 85 or so HP costs??
