  1. I usually say " There she is" as I set the hook so my buddy knows I am out fishing him again. lol
  2. Sometimes a second man in the boat determines which way you have to swing to keep everyone safe. I am a righty and usually set across my left shoulder to about an 11 oclock position it seems.
  3. We are fishing mostly grass beds if that matters and using mostly paca craws on 4/0 gammys.
  4. Years ago I would let a fish run first but getting back into fishing the last couple years I have started setting the hook on first contact with the fish when possible. My partner lets his fish run first and gut hooks about 20%, I have had 2 GOOD fish pull off I think from not being hooked as deep as I would like them to be. Anyway do you let the fish run with it or try to drive the hook in as quick as possible???
  5. Love me some jig fishing!!! The best advice I have gathered for jigs, or any other bait, is to learn what it feels like when you are not getting a bite. Anything different, swing away. You will jerk on grass or brush on occasion but that is just part of it.
  6. I have a buddy that knows our local lake very well. He can go into a cove with 300 trees in it and point out the 3 that we will catch fish off of. Around here they like cedars and I would have to assume the best trees to fish have something different underwater but I am not sure what it is.
  7. Somewhere close to a double digit bass, 8 or better at least. Learn to slow WAY down and use jigs. Jigs are doing me pretty good so far this year and I have lost 2 that would break 8 lbs so I am on my way.
  8. Usually 2 evenings and try for a full day on weekends if I can.
  9. I have 4 kids from 3 to 15. They can be a pain but it is always worth it to take them to the water. My 3 year old is always an echo of I got one yet? You got one yet? I got one yet??..................
  10. Just ordered the revo s and 7'3" veritas. Be the best I have ever owned I hope. Thanks guys.
  11. I am a poor boy but got a little cash to spend and want opinions on whether or not a little extra is worth it. Looking Revo s versus sx and the vendetta versus veritas. I like flippin and pitchin and fish WAY more jigs and plastic than anything else. I like the sx having more bearings and the veritas having more eyes. Will get a 7' mh fast action rod or maybe longer in heavy if you guys recommend the vendetta. Opinions appreciated. Hope to order in the morning. Actually I can get veritas longer if no micro eyes.
  12. I lost a big fish that would have won a $100 jackpot lat week. I let out 1 word that I won't put on here, gently laid my pole down and took a seat and lit a smoke. My partner looked at me and said you can't quit. I told him I would fish in a minute but I needed to throw up first. lol Would have been my biggest ever by about 3 lbs. probably weighed 9 or so.
  13. Ok now this post has me wondering how many lbs of pressure is required for a solid hook set on a good sized large mouth bass. I figure with drag at 6 lbs I am gonna give up some line when I set the hook. Will this prevent a solid hook-up????
  14. just wanted to add that every time I set the hook there was a fish there. I did not jerk 40 times on 5 bites.
  15. I hung a good fish yesterday and my partner asked me if she hit it hard or just picked it up and I replied I really don't know. I know it may sound weird but I can't remember feeling anything and I set the hook before I realized what was happening. Some advice I read on here was that it is more important to know how it feels when you are not getting a bite and anything different set the hook. It is kind of hard to explain but I can't remember feeling a bite yesterday and boated 5 fish on plastics. I think more important than equipment, and obviously I have cheaper equipment to say that, is time on the water.
  16. Santa Claus (UPS) made it here today!!! These jigs look awesome and I am thinking will probably be ordering more premiers in the near future. Ready to stick one of these in ol' cross-eyed Betty!!!
  17. I have never owned a rod that cost over about $40 but I nearly feel it is too strong (not enough flex). Confident on the hook set but losing faith in ability to land fish. I know it is probably me doing something wrong (over pressuring) and the fish was hooked so that I could see my bait when she jumped. I wish she were hooked deeper. I was fishing for $100 pot and weighed in 7-8 and lost to 8-2, would have won enough to buy a better rod. On a brighter note out of 5 boats only 2 of us caught fish so at least I am on fish, just wanna catch at least one monster in my life.
  18. The first thing I did after losing her was loosen my drag a few clicks. I am using 7 ft m/h lightning rods and this has sure got me wondering if a better rod with a faster tip would help or not.
  19. I hung a fish that would easily break 8 and probably 9 and lost it. I wanted to puke over the side of the boat. I am fishing with 50 lb power pro and am used to bringing my fish to the boat pretty quick. I have lost the 2 biggest fish I have ever hooked this spring and I think it is from putting too much pressure on them. How do you guys fight bigger than average fish in less than 6 foot of water?? Slow or fast?? I think it is kinda like buck fever when deer hunting and I need to let the fish wear down instead of trying to horse them in. Fishing grass beds so I have to get them out of it but I am talking once they are in open water.
  20. Yeah I plan on swimming flukes.
  21. Any of you guys use flukes for trailers on swim jigs??? I plan to give it a try just wondering if anyone does any good like this. On my local lake a white fluke does good at times so I am thinking a shad colored jig and a white fluke trailer may be just the ticket.
  22. Have been trying to fish about 80% jigs so far this year and really not doing to bad. Anyway I have been unable to find swim jigs that I like anywhere so yesterday I broke down and ordered some North Stars. Pickings were pretty slim but here is what I got. 2 premier flipping jigs in watermelon candy 2 each of swim jigs in following colors: bull gill, perch, sexy shad, silver shad and purple sexy shad. I just about bought 2 of everything TW had left. When NS gets the store back open I plan to purchase some other colors.
  23. Posts just like this one cost me nearly $100 yesterday!!! :hangloose:
  24. If any of you guys live near a Walls you need to check them out. One here that carries a lot of BPS stuff and all is marked at 75% off retail. Lots of plastics for about $1 a bag and jigs are about 60 cents. My brother bought a Rick Clunn set of crank baits (6 in the pack) for $22. Some pretty good deals at times.
  25. Same problem last year and gama super line hooks solved it.
