  1. I grew up in a small town in upstate NY right on the Oswego River. Upstate NY is known for it's record snowfalls and HUGE spring runoff and HIGH, raging water levels in the river. On a quick melt year, all of the riverside fenced walkways we would fish from as kids ended up completely submerged under raging torrents. I was about 12 years old, a year with an extremely bad winter and incredibly high river levels. A buddy and I fished whenever we could but certainly knew the dangers of the high water levels and our parents were very aware of where we fished as well. One morning, we were loading up our gear to fish and were told by both of our parents, "Do NOT go to the river. If you do, you won't be fishing for a long, long time." "Of Course", we replied. Well, being 12 and full of p i s s and vinegar, a little high water wasn't going to scare us away from our favorite fishing spot! We'll just go where we told our parents we were going and then after a bit, head for the money hole! Great idea, no one will EVER know!!! Well, that plan worked great until about 24 hours later when my dad showed up from work and unrolled the newspaper. There we were, in all our glory on the front page of the newspaper in about an 8x10 color shot fishing near the raging torrent. The caption below reads, "Two local teens braving the dangerous waters for a chance to land a big one! Turn to page 10 for more photos!!" Turn to page 10 for 6 more shots of me and my buddy, posing with our rods, tackle and a couple fish happier than pigs in slop that we were going to be in the newspaper. Funny how at 12 years old, you don't really think of the consequences of posing for a full spread of glamour shots in the local paper when you're fishing in a place you've been forbidden to go!! Well, after a nicely reddened rear end, a good tongue lashing and a couple weeks of no fishing. I "think" I learned my lesson. I *never* did anything dangerous after that (I swear)!!!
  2. To the Pfleuger point, I have two Supreme XT's and they're pretty hard to beat for the money. You can find them on sale often and they are just well built.
  3. A few more tools of the trade.......Is it spring yet?
  4. The new arrival needed some glamour shot love....I can't wait to fish this thing!!!
  5. I have two S-Glass crankin' rods and I love them. Not sure I'd buy any of the other models as the feel isn't there IMO but the S-Glass cranking rods are perfect for small to medium sized cranks. Paired with a Curado E5 or E6 they are fantastic.
  6. If you're talking about spinning reels, I have two XT's and they are awesome. Smooth, cast a mile, light and with the right rod offer a perfectly balanced setup. Nice smooth drag too. I'd buy another in a heartbeat if I needed another spinning setup.
  7. I was in BPS this weekend and picked up 2 new rods. One, a new Carbonlite 6.4:1 with a 7' MH Microguide Carbonlite rod. One word: LIGHT!!!! I mean, so freaking light, i almost couldn't believe what I was feeling (or not feeling for that matter). The reel was smooth in all areas and seems to be built like a tank. Great materials selection and the textured finish makes for a nice feel when palmed. I am stoked to get out and pull in some hogs with it!! I'll post back when I get some time on the water with the new setup. The other pair I grabbed was an old faithful spinning reel, a Pfleuger Supreme XT, with a 6'6" MH Carbonlite rod. This one was the kicker. I was at the reel counter looking at reels and had done my homework before I came in. BPS will give you the online combo price on any pair as shown online, regardless of whether or not it is shown as a combo in store. This combo was shown for $199 online (not bad for a rod that's normally $99 and a reel that's $159). When I asked the girl at the counter to confirm the combo price she said "No, this is in our computers at $229." So I said, "You do match the online pricing in store, right?" "Of course", she said. So great, $200 it is. Well, I get to the counter to pay for everything and another fella rings me up. $159!!! Not sure what happened there, but thanks BPS for making my weekend!!!!!!! Basically got the Carbonlite rod free! Got a chance to throw it a few times in a small pond nearby and man, what a beautiful setup. No complaints from me!!
  8. I always have had great luck with the Blue Back Herring either lipless or sqaurebilled. Also Strike King's sexy shad seems to pull em in too....
  9. Who stops fishing when it gets cold? That's what they make jackets for!!! Get out there and get after it!!!

Spotters. It's an australian company, but the glasses are available from many online sites. Expensive, but maybe the last ones you'll ever buy. Incredible lenses.
  11. Hey all....new member here from North Carolina. I have been fishing all my life for different species and have just recently really regained my love for bass fishing. Things have changed an awful lot since I last fished seriously as far as technology and techniques go. I have a good buddy here in NC who is an awesome fisherman and has taught me an awful lot. I'm looking forward to all the knowledge and info on this site. Cheers- Matt
