Protocol For Buying From A Private Individual
i don't know how to buy a boat or a bulldozer so if i was going to buy i would make sure to get one that was less that 5yrs old. chances are its going to be more mechanically sound. ie the 'T4000 model' i want/can afford is 8yrs old. i'd settle for the T3000 model that was 3yrs old

Protocol For Buying From A Private Individual
great advice. i wouldn't mind agreeing on a final price up front. "can we agree on a price now? if it passes inspection and a test drive on the lake will you take $5,xxx? whats ur bottom line?". it lets him know ur serious buyer and he's got to back his words via a mechanic that it's a good boat. the transaction is less stressful and you can negotiate any repairs the mechanic might recommend from that starting point.

Oh What The Heck
if the doctor recommends a lobotomy, go find another doctor. on a serious note, i hope you feel better. don't ONLY do what the doctor says. do more. do the hard stuff that doesn't come in a pill. take good care of yourself. get to bed early and get plenty of sleep each night, eat more healthy foods..and less junk/fried foods/cigarettes/booze/hookers, sleep or eat a cold away instead of taking medicine, find a low stress job (one that is within your mental capabilities vs overwhelming), surround yourself with good people.. and fish more .

Slow Fall Jigs
do you really need a special jig for that? you def don't need a weed guard at that point. why not t-rig a naked craw w/ a small bullet weight or split shot

A Quick Poll
thumb break all the way...with every bc technique. just like an olympic diver, the angler who enters the water with the least amount of splash will reap the rewards. perfect 10...set the hook!!!!

Anyone Have A Carrot Stick Last Past A Year?
i had one but sold it in under 2 months. i liked everything except the tip...too stiff like a cheap rod. (nice hardware, balance, lightness, backbone). there are better rods for the money. spend a few more bucks and get a powell, duckett, st croix, dobyns savvy etc.

Johnny Morris Carbonlite Reel

Random Question About Fish Care & Handling
most tackle can handle just reeling dinks in w/o worry of breakage. they don't fight or wear themselves out so they can be 'tossed' back in. larger bass put up a longer fight/make more runs, and you have to worry about breaking line if you put too much pressure on them. they can wear themselves out to the point of exhaustion so its better to revive them b/c a musky could blindside them while they are trying to catch their breath/come to. the terms 'dink' and 'bubba' are relative to where you live but it's probably better to measure them against ur equipment. ie dink=anything under 3lbs on a MH rod w/ 15lb fluoro. you can reel them in quickly and toss'm right back. basically if the fish is exhaused, revive him properly. if the whole battle lasted 15 seconds, no need to.

Braid To Fluoro
wrap the braid around the fluoro. the braid is pliable and can be easily wrapped. it woundn't make sense to try and bend the fluoro around braid. that would be like trying to wrap a coat hanger around a shoelace.

Hook Removal Tool Help
try pinching the barb down. many very experienced members say it does not lead to lost fish. if the eye of the hook is outside the fish, use the palm of ur hand to pop the hook. you'll see tons of guys using this method on youtube while removing jigs w/ stout hooks. this works great if they swallow it: http://www.electric-bass.org/throughTheGill.htm

Dobyns Champion 762 Spinning
TW has a sale on the rod and I'd like to pick one up but I'm worried about it having too short of a handle b/c of a review. It's listed as 12 3/4" from butt to top of the foregrip. By looking at my other rods I'm going to subtract 2" to put the center of the reel seat at 10 3/4"....which would indeed make it too short for my preference (probably wouldn't mind on a 5'5" rod but I think it would take away to much casting performance on 7'6"). Can anyone verify this?

What's A Major That Lets You Stay In The Fishing Industry?
Go with Marketing. it doesn't matter what job you end up with in life, you always need to know how to 'market yourself' (on job interviews, for a raise, for a promotion, to change jobs, to change industry). you're safe if you know how to do that...if the market crashes, if ur hurt on the job, if ur company goes bankrupt etc. You can always market yourself into a new position, in that industry or the next. Keep in mind: less than 25% of people work in the field of their bachelors degree. most people have college loans and are willing to take any job they can get out of college. even if you work in that field initially you most likely won't in 10 yrs. Moral of the story is don't stress yourself out about a few college courses. And don't let teachers/counselors stress you about getting 'accepted' into college. Its YOUR MONEY and there are tons of colleges that want it.

Lure X
What's a trick you use to become a better angler? I insert 'lure x' into any good information I come across on a specific technique. IE Use a jerk-jerk-pause when retrieving a jerkbait. The length of pause time depends on water temp/time of year. The colder the water=longer pauses and less violent jerks b/c fish are lethargic, don't chase, have a small strike zone. The warmer water, the shorter pause b/c fish are aggressive, have higher metabolism, respond to violent burst of energy/lure, have a larger strike zone. I'll transition that info. to all lures b/c it helps me experiment on the water. I get more bites b/c I focus on lure retrieve and cadence rather than constantly changing lures every 5 mins. Improves my jigs, worms, t-rigs, tubes, lure x. Share a tip and help make everyone's winter less painful. Taking your wife on her favorite weekend getaway so you can attend Pickwick 2013 counts.

Fd's Fishmas Official Loot Thread
Thanks for the great loot Chris! I had to wait open it today as per Santa McAlpine's instructions. It just so happens i'm putting in a TW order in a few day's for a 7'6" spinning Dobyns for lighter lures. Now I have tubes and Gulp's for it. And thanks for taking the edge off my winter withdrawal with the BPS DVD. And many thanks for organizing the Fishmas exchange FishinDaddy. Its something I really look forward to. No only b/c you get cool stuff but b/c it kicks you out of ur 'lure comfort zone'. You get to try things you wouldn't have normally bought. Merry Fishmas everyone!

Is It Ok To Go Above/below Lure Size On Rods?
cast away my friend. that weight is insignificant. depending on the rod you will start to see backlash issues when 1/2 oz over the limit. breakage issues should require 3/4oz+ over limit.
-
Is It Ok To Go Above/below Lure Size On Rods?
yes. but the real problems are: 1-using too light of a lure means you need to whip the rod like Hercules and will only achieve a fraction of the distance as using the right rod/lure combo. you tire out very quickly. your cast will 'hook' hard left (if right handed). you will have no accuracy. 2-using too heavy of a rod means LOTS of backlashes. you will probably jam the reel 3-4 times and give up. you can get away with it if the rod has a very stiff tip. a softer tip means trouble for sure. you will most likely give up b/c of backlashes before breaking a rod tip. every beginner fisherman tries to maximize his rods for multiple techniques. after you get tired of 1 & 2 you buy dedicated rods.

Okuma Big Bait Rod 7'6" Heavy, And A Cardiff A Series Casting Reel 300
I bought a few set ups but haven't used them much b/c of time and a short season (You will most likely have more success and a much longer season in GA than in PA). I liked my XH Okuma much better than the H b/c it has a stiffer tip which means less backlashing when tossing 8" Hudds. Braid cuts like butter when backlasing a 4oz lure which means a $25-80 swimbait sailing into the abyss. (I do use braid on all my baitcaster b/c it doesn't kink during a backlast like flouro will). It doesn't cut near as easily w/ baits under 1oz). The slightly stiffer tip and mono line will save you time and money. I use 80lb braid backing with 30lb CXX main line. 65lb braid will be fine esp if you already have it sitting around. Plus you can use it for other applications like punching/flipping/froggin. I also have the 300A reel which performed awesome. You don't need a special set up for 6" Hudds. Just use a regular/heavy baitcast rig you have.

St Croix Triumph - Xtra Hvy
you could use it to beat off would be muggers. in all seriousness that is a beast of a rod better for salt water. it would be total over kill but you could use it for punching heavy mats or thick milfoil weeds. the problem being you won't have alot of sensitivity to detect a bite. the good news is if you did feel the bite you could have 80lb braid on and wench out the new FL state record.
