  1. Welcome, I live in Frederick myself. I don't know anything about fishing for Walleye, but I think they can be had on the Potomac up around d**n 5, I'm sure somebody here can correct me if I'm wrong. As for Smallmouth on the Potomac, Lander, Brunswick, White's Ferry, and Point of Rocks are some good spots. If you are a wader Point of Rocks is excellent. When the river level is down below 1.7 ( I prefer 1.5 myself) at Point of Rocks, you can park on the VA side at the boat launch and wade over to the MD side. It's nice a shallow access on the VA side as to where on the MD side it's a lot more rocky with bigger holes to fall into. The river won't be low enough to wade at Point of Rocks until Mid summer. My brothers and I just went out on the Potomac from the Mouth of the Monocacy and thats about 15 - 20 mins from Frederick down 85. We just got our outboard working on the Jon boat so I hope to explore more of the Potomac this year. We got the boat last year from a friend and were stuck with a not working motor. For the rest of you, my brother and I did make a trip to Black Hills yesterday evening. We threw everything we had at the stick ups and came away with not even a hit and left some more spinners back there. I swear I'm going to take the yak out there without my fishing rods and just go collect every lure I see hanging in a tree. The water level seems down though, about a foot more shore line is exposed. We then ran over to the backwash. It's still stained like crazy though. My bro caught a little pounder on the backwash side and I had one on, but he jumped and got off. I was on the lake side. Had a few take a run at a lipless crank but didn't hit it. Both were caught slow rolling plastics. Seemed to be holding about 2 - 3 feet out from the rocks. Basser89 - a friend of mine saw a little girl pull a 4 pounder out of Baker Park over the weekend. Unfortunately, he said she kept it. He said she was opposite side of the little shack.
  2. Has anyone been to black hills lately? I'm thinking about going down there after work today. I'm guessing they have to be close to sitting on their beds. I've never had much luck when they are just protecting the nest.
  3. I just left a brand new crawdad colored lipless crank near the beaver d**n on a tree just under the suface, you can't miss it. I really need to get my Jeep bought so I can get the kayak out there and retrive my stuff.
  4. The lure floats on top of the water, now give it back. Just kidding. The only high dollar, if you want to consider it high dollar, I have is a $10 popper I bought with a bass pro gift card. The way I contribute lures to the fish Gods, I'm not spending big bucks.
  5. Hit BlackHills today from about 3 to 6. Got one one my 3rd cast, just a small guy. Missed one about 30 mins later. Then managed this 4 pounder just as I was about to call it a night. I did leave some lipless cranks on the bottom of the lake to pay tribute to the fishing Gods. Looks like I need to grab some more before I get back down there.
  6. hit black hills tonight with my brother. My brother managed 2 right away, nothing big. he caught them on a 4 inch zoom lizard. I threw everything in my tackle box and didn't get a hit. Fish were breaking the water all over the place though.
  7. I'm glad to see I set the standard for todays fish. Awesome catches. After not being able to get into Black Hills on Sunday I'm itching to get down there, looks like things are really starting to pick up. The soonest I'll get to go will be Friday if we don't get the rain, if not then, I'll try for Sunday afternoon again. I'm going for some smallmouth in a creek up in Frederick, my brother checked it out today and caught one. I'm going to show him how it's done tomorrow. You need to wade to get to the hot spots in the creek, and I'm sure the water is way to cold for that.
  8. I hit up Baker Park on my lunch hour today, and only landed my personal best largemouth. 21" and had to be close to if not a 5 pounder. Of course I got a digital scale for xmas and the batteries were dead, so I couldn't even weigh him. He was nice and fat
  9. Ken Penrod has a weekly fishing report for the Potomac - this sunday he said the upper potomac at Point of Rocks was 50 degrees. http://www.penrodsguides.com/fishingreport.htm
  10. no problem, I just learned the hard way too, I checked out over by the bridge but it was packed so I just called it a day. it's going to be nice this week so I'm going to try my creek after work on wed. I'll probably hit baker park up Monday and Tuesday on my lunch hour
  11. Tried Middletown pond Friday night, didn't catch anything. Today I tried to fish Black Hills but they had the park closed for some Iranian festival, I couldn't even get into the d**n park.
  12. I haven't been out lately, but plan on sneaking over to Black Hills Sat afternoon. Basser, have you been fishing the stick ups? I was suppose to hit d**n 4 with my brothers Sat, but the wife is working and nobody to watch my kid.
  13. I made it out to Black Hills Sat for about 2 hours. Hit the stick ups and didn't get anything. I tried worm, jig, and jerk bait. I'm getting jealous of you guys posting pictures!!
  14. A different topic, has anybody fished the Potomac at Lander? My bro's and I have a 14' Jon boat and I was thinking about hitting that place. I don't know how the current is, and right now we are stuck with a 36lb trolling motor until our 9.8 outboard is fixed. We were debating hitting d**n 4 this weekend depending on how cold it's going to be in the morning, but Lander would be closer. I'm just not familiar with Lander.
  15. I've never seen that body of water by Walmart. I don't know how I missed it, I've taken my kayak on the Monocacy up there a few times last year. FisherHuntress - there are some ponds around Frederick, Baker Park, Middletown park. There is a nice sized one right by Whittier Elementary school which is off Rosemont. I'm sure all these ponds hold bluegill which should be easy to catch with some worms and a bobber (but we all know fishing is never that easy). I think most of the people here fish for Bass, and those should be in all the above mentioned ponds. The Monocacy river is good for smallmouth bass and it's very easy to wade around in the river if that's your thing. Pinecliff park is a place I go to a lot, but it was horrible fishing there last year for some reason, the year before I was crushing them there. As a beginner the best thing I could recommend to use there are rebel crawfish crankbaits, you'll catch bluegill on those too, but I'm no pro so take my word with a grain of salt. If you want to be adventurous the Potomac river is an awesome place for smallmouth. Easy wading if the Point of Rocks river level is under 1.7, I prefer it to be closer to 1.5. You can park on the VA side of the river just over the bridge and wade out from the boat ramp. Don't wade out on the MD side, it's deeper and more dangerous. Another go to spot around this area is Black Hill Regional park in Boyds, people have a ton of luck catching some nice bass there. Basser - I know you fish Middletown but have you ever seen that small pond near the highs on the left on the way up there? I drive past it twice a week picking my kid up from day care and keep telling myself I need to check it out, never see anybody fishing it, and it looks to be on public land. At least I can assume it's public until somebody chases me away from it with a shotgun. Also, once it warms up if you want I can take you to my secret creek over by spring ridge, it was very good to me and my brothers last year. Easy wading too. You gave me some very good help/info last year and I don't mind sharing my "honey hole" with you. There are some LMB in there as well. I've only seen a handfull of people back there in the 2 years I've fished it, and they were fishing in the wrong spots.
  16. Basser I live right near you, we should meet up at Baker park sometime. I only managed 1 out of there last year. I need to learn from the pro.
  17. Got out Sat morning at Blackhills with my brothers. Put in at 7:00am and fished to about 1:30. Water was pretty stained and it was cold! We took the boat past the bridge and way back to the right and worked our way back. We didn't even get a bite, but we also don't have any clue about cold water bass fishing. We've yet to get a depth/fish finder and thought would have helped us if we had one. For the most part we were using jigs and I was going back and forth between a jig and a jerk bait. Later in the day I tried worms on a shaky head. I really didn't expect to catch anything, but it was fun being out there anyway. In 2 weeks we are heading up to Dam 5 since we should be getting our 9.8HP outboard back and fixed this week.
  18. Will do Baser, I've been watching youtube vids for winter bass fishing this week. I went out and picked up a few jerkbaits and added a few more jigs to my tackle box. We'll be putting the boat in at 6:30am and will fish until about 1:00. It's suppose to be 29 degrees at 6:00 in the morning, YIKES!!
  19. My brothers and I are hitting Black Hills Sat. morning in the jon boat. I've never fished this early in the year there, doubt we'll catch anything, but hey, I just enjoy being on the water. I have a baitcaster that my father in law gave me and I've never used one before, so I'm sure I'll be spending most my time fixing the birds nest all day long.
  20. Wow Sean, I've tried the pond at Baker Park a few times and really didn't manage much out of there. Looks like I better try again! I'll have to try and hit that thing at lunch tomorrow or Thur. Now that you are in walking distance of my house I'm going to have pay you to take me out, do you take beer or cash?
  21. Hey guys, I'm heading out to Dickerson for my 1st time. I plan on hitting the river for smallies. Any thing I should know about going down there?
  22. So I'm thinking about hitting up Black Hills after work tonight, but have never really fished it in the fall. Is shore fishing still viable or have the fish moved to deeper water? I'm thinking of either stick-ups or the back wash.
  23. I have no idea what "popper weather" is but before I went on vacation I was at the creek and for the heck of it put on a mini torpedo and tore it up until I caught a tree with it. I only had 1 of those. Need to get some more. So last night I worked up the creek with a 4" zoom lizard which never seems to let me down, and then came back down the creek with my popper. It's pretty crazy, I fished the creek with my brother last year and I don't think either of us caught a largemouth, all smallies. This year, there seems to be a ton of largemouth in there. The creek is a feeder creek into the Monocacy river that flows out of Liberty reservoir. We've managed to pin point some pretty hot spots around Spring Ridge that hold some nice fish. In the 2 years we've been fishing it, we've only seen maybe 3 or 4 people fishing down there, and never in any of the "hot" spots.
  24. Been out on vacation last week, so I hit my creek last night. Got a 2 pounder and this nice 3 pounder on a top water popper
  25. Hit the stick ups tonight from 6 -8, nothing. I'm renaming Black Hills to "Soul Crusher". Man that place can make you feel like you have no idea how to fish. I'll be hitting my honey hole creek Thurs night to actually catch some fish.
