  1. There is a lake where I like to fish. This lake has a large amount of small bass. Most around a pound. The largest fish I have caught out of the Lake was about 5 pounds. I am looking for an ultra light setup that won't break the bank that will make catching these little fish fun and more of a fight. Budget $150 or less.
  2. Marriage life and soon to be family life has me wondering how much time others get to squeeze in for fishing. How much time a week do you make it out on the water? How much time do you need to make it out on the water before the trip is worth it? For me I get to fish about once a week for about 5 hours a week. I want to be out on the water for at least 2 hours. If I cannot get 2 hours out of a trip then I usually wont go.
  3. I'm not very experienced with baitcaters and my first good reel is a Shimano Curado 51e. I am in love with this reel. I am a beginner and I can still cast light baits and cast into the wind if need be. I love this reel. It is so smooth.
  4. I put my curado 51e on a redbone 7' medium action rod. This is a dual purpose setup for me. I use it for bass fishing and will be using it for trout and Redfish also. I also looked at St croix and Shimano rods.
  5. My Curado 51e arrived today. I put 12lb mono line on and threw around a buzzbait that I practice with. I love this reel so far. I'm going to keep it and just get a separate spinning reel. Thanks for all the help.
  6. I actually grew up in south Florida fishing grouper with only Penn reels. It's good to know Penn is still one of the more dominant companies. After doing a search on several other forums it seems like Shimano is still a recommended brand just no where near what BR forum members recommend. On other forums it seems to shift more to Penn. Quantum and Daiwa are also recommended.
  7. I know this topic is beat to death but what would you do in my situation? I get 40% off 2 pairs of Maui Jim's every year. With the discount the pair I want will be $110. I would order these straight from Maui Jim. The Costa's I want will be with the 580p lens and would cost $110 from Ebay. Should I go with the Maui Jim's due to knowing they will be real over the possible fake Ebay Costa's? This will be my first pair of sunglasses over $20.
  8. I am sure you are correct. How do you keep slack line out if your using a texas rig or something of that nature or does it not matter once the bail is closed? Sooner or later your going to have to reel in slack line.
  9. I went fishing today using my cheap Shimano Syncopate 2500. I had it correctly spooled up with 10lb power pro. I was fishing texas rig, poppers, and a Rapala. About half way through fishing I got a huge knot in the line discovered while I was casting and hung up on the rod. Cut the knot out. ABout 2 cast later I had to do the same thing all over again. Is this do to a cheap reel, rod, or both? If this is something I continuously have to deal with then I will take the baitcaster and just get really use to what it can do in saltwater.
  10. I guess I should sell my nib curado 51e and get a stradic then. I don't think I would need larger than a 2500 as I will be fishing flats in a kayak. If I hook on to something bigger I'll just hang on and go for a ride. Thanks for the help.
  11. If you could only have 1 of these to do all of your fishing to include some light saltwater which would it be?
  12. Has anyone used or read about using a Curado 50e in saltwater? Do you think this rod could pull double duty for Snook, trout, and reds?
  13. Can you point me to a website that has this deal?
  14. I'm glad you shot me straight. I took the rod and reel back today. I found a store around here that sells Shimano reels so I got to put hands on them. After playing with the Shimano reels I am glad I did the return. Do you all think it would be better to pay a little more and get the Saros F or should I stick with the Symetre?
  15. Went to Walmart and they had a Pflueger President 6935 combo for $80. So I picked up this combo and put 20lb power pro on it. Do you think this will be a good setup do all general purpose fishing? I bought some 12lb fluorocarbon line to use for leader and secured it to the braid using a double uni knot.
  16. If you were shore fishing and had to carry only a small tackle box on a lake you have never fished what would you bring? Let's assume where you are going fishing is an average of 3' deep with some spots that are 7' deep. The water is dark in most places but clears up in some spots. The water is in the 70's and it us post spawn. You have only 3 clear Plano boxes to fill up. What are you bringing.
  17. I don't have a boat so when I go fishing it is generally from the shore. I want a single spinning setup that I can do it all with. I will spool it with power pro and use leaders depending on the bait. My budget is $180 for the rod and reel.
  18. I just purchase a Curado 50e. It will be my only baitcast setup. I plan to get more baitcast setups in the future but for now this is it. What would be a good rod under $100 to pair this reel with. For now it will have to serve as my general purpose rig.
  19. I live in Tallahassee, FL. The closest Gander Mountain is 151 miles away. BPS is 171 miles away. DSG is 90 miles. I drive a pickup truck so none of these would be cheaper than shipping. There is a sports authority and they are building an academy sports.
  20. I don't have any big sporting good stores around me that sell decent setups. Walmart is where most people buy around here. The nearest BPS is about a 2.5 hour drive. How many people buy a reel without demoing it first?
  21. My local Walmart may have the Citica 200e in a very limited supply. If this reel is priced around $120 is it worth buying or is there better out there around the same price? What if its $100 does that make it more enticing?
  22. Roadwarrior has posted his recommended 3 setup combos that will cover all ranges of fishing: #1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some soft plastics and spinnerbaits #2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook lures #3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a variety of techniques I plan on going by this to get me started down the path. I started fishing by going to Walmart and always picking up an Ugly Stick and a spinning reel to slap on it, then hit the water. Lately I have really jumped into bass fishing. I try to wake up early to get 2 hours of fishing time before work. So I think its time I start buying quality setups. Going off of what Roadwarrior posts, what ratio would I want for the baitcasters? I heard 6.4 is a do it all ratio but wasn't sure if I should just put 6.4 ratio reels on both setups 1 & 2 or should go with a higher or lower ratio on a given setup?
  23. What I am trying to do is fill the 3 basic setups that Roadwarrior has posted a few times: #1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some soft plastics and spinnerbaits #2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook lures #3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a variety of techniques With this $400 I would like to get 1 and 2 completed. If you think it would be worth it to spend more money on just one setup then I would rather it be for rig #1.
  24. I don't understand how you all are saying $200 per setup is not enough. A Mojo bass rod is $100. Then a BPS Pro Qualifier is another $100. Is this not a good setup? Or would it still be better to get my spinner bait, jerkbait rod first then save for a crank bait rod? I say that order because I don't use crank baits as much.
  25. I am shopping for new sunglasses now. Should I go with a natural gray or a bronze lens? Sunglasses will be Maui Jim's
