I just purchase a Curado 50e. It will be my only baitcast setup. I plan to get more baitcast setups in the future but for now this is it.

What would be a good rod under $100 to pair this reel with. For now it will have to serve as my general purpose rig.

I stuck mine on a 6' 10" M Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rod. Loaded it with 8 pound fluoro. I've been using it for light to medium jigs and wacky rigged 3 and 4 inch senkos. I also used it in a pinch to fish some lighter lipless cranks where I was ripping them hard and pausing. I like the setup.

Right now my 51E is on the same rod except with 8 lb. Big Game. Lure range is 1/8-5/8 oz. Not a bad place to be. You might want to consider a MHF that has a lure range of 1/4-1 oz. if you want an all-around rod to start with. The Smallmouth Medium Fast will make a good all-around rod as long as you don't plan on heavier than 5/8 oz. Haven't thrown anything above 1/2 oz. with mine yet, so can't say how well it handles the 5/8 weight. Some rods are capable of handling heavier than their rating with no problem. However, I tend to take the manufacturer at his word until someone else says different through experience. :) Some Medium rods (Falcon for example) only go to 1/2 oz.

Here is a link to the 6'10" MF Fenwick. Price is a bit more than I payed, but still within your budget. It is a pretty nice rod. I picked up a MH Daiwa Jupiter (Wal-Mart exclusive) while in Florida a couple months ago. Got to fish it for 1 day before heading back. (Rod stays there for next time.) It is rated for 1/4-1 oz. Throws a 1/4 oz. pretty good. Only read one review on this rod, but it was enough to sway me to make the purchase. Didn't want to spend much on a rod that will only be used a few times a year.

EDIT: Yesterday was my 2nd day out with the Fenwick. Mostly threw a couple shallow running crankbaits and a topwater jerkbait. Made a long distance release on the one hit I had. Man was it hot. Felt more like Florida. :)

EDIT2: Smallmouth rod review.

I'll say the BPS Carbonlites are very nice rods, and are only like 80$ on sale. Which is often. I would pick up one of those. Very light and crisp rods. Oh, and while your at it get some Yo-Zuri hybrid 10# Thats some great stuff

My top 2 choices would be either a MH veritas or a MH elite tech smallmouth rod.

There are a number of decent rods within your budget and the 50E is a nice little reel. You want to match the rod to the intended application rather than to the reel itself. For an all around baitcast rod I'd look for something 7' MH/F. You can stretch the budget even further if you consider something lightly used.
