  1. You could plunk some Kwikfish, K5 or K7 I like. While you kwikfish wait for a bite you can float or drift fish roe, skein or artificials. That is the reason the guys use the long rods 8-10 feet, so they can mend the line easier.
  2. I am from Batavia, NY. Have you checked the DEC's web site? They have a lot of information about Lake Erie and Ontario and their tributaries. There is a lot of good fishing in those areas. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/fishhotlines.html
  3. So up here in western New York it's about time for the salmon run. Over the last two years I have gotten to fish it about 10 times with no luck. The local bait shops have suggested Little Cleo Spoons, salmon eggs and skein. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience fishing for them and the techniques used. I would really like to make this the year I catch one. Thanks.
  4. Sinking cranks.
  5. Welcome fellow New Yorker. Great to see another person enthusiastic about fishing.
  6. Congrats, I feel the same way. I'm glad I have the internet to learn. Makes learning a whole lot easier.
  7. I am not familiar with the area, but usually local bait shops can provide good information. Check area bait shops and see what they have for bait fish around and find ways to imitate those. Also I have never fished a place where soft places won't catch.
  8. Reeling in the bait and letting it swim out will cause the fish too tire quickly. I would recommend just casting it out towards some type of cover(stumps, weeds. lay downs) and let the bait do all the work for you. From experience when I let bait get tired the bait seems too lose its appeal to the fish. If you want to increase your chances and have a second pole and it is legal where you fish maybe fish 2. Where i fish I am aloud 3 freshwater poles at a time. As always know the rules and regulations though.
  9. I love braid but not for trebles. I use fluorocarbon for cranks and heavy mono for top waters. I find I set the hook to quick with braid even with a fiberglass rod.
  10. At Caleb, post-frontal is referring to after a cold front has passed. You can find this looking at surface maps. Often a cold front is followed by a high pressure system leading to bluebird skies. Pre-frontal often is overcast and wind picking up as the front moves closer. Pre-frontal conditions the fish tend to feed more aggressively, post-front the become a harder bite. It is usually thought after a cold front passes to fish tight to cover with slow presentations to trigger a strike. This is a good article on cold fronts. http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/cold_front.html

  12. With a little slack, snap the rod tip back a bit. Do that once and let it sit for a few seconds then repeat. Vary your cadence up like 1 pause 2 pause 1 pause 3 pause and the fish will lit you know what they want. I have had a lock of luck with the on the outside of weed edges and over submerged trees/logs. Also remember not to hook set when you see the fish break water, wait until you feel the fish.
  13. Doubled check I guess it is ten feet with gate down. Would it still be ok to do?
  14. It's an F250 super duty but I will double check.
  15. Is weight really that much of a problem? I always fish with my father or a friend. I'm 180# and my dad around 230. So was hoping two people could carry it. Where we usually fish doesn't have a place to back up to the water. We travel pretty light when we fish. Just a small tackle box each and 2 poles a piece. Other than that would mostly just be a couple waters, no cooler need as we don't keep fish. And obviously oars not planning on a TM.
