Bass Anglers In Arkansas
fry when you are better, i'd like to hear what works at degray. i usually fish from the spillway ramp in the cove there and around towards the lake but distance is limited in a canoe with a trolling motor. i also fish the lower lake off channel road at the ramp below the bridge there. i try to fish there 2-3 times each month. thank, get well soon.

Show your ride...
war that is a dandy...grew up in a jon, 14 ft. sears with a 9 1/2 johnson and both took a beatin big time and caught more fish, killed more ducks, ran over more stumps and water mocs and as rough as it was and homely...walking back from shooting ducks and finding barbed wire with a wader boot made that the prettiest lil jon on the water. upgraded it to an 18 evinrude when the bond movie came out with the new evinrudes on all the boats and it would scat. gave the 9 1/2 and $600 for the 18. do that today and someone is drunk! hanover...that's just showin off. i don't blame you either that is an awesome ride. somewhere a video shows one with one man and he's tied to a two man kayak with paddles and he drags em wherever he wants to. they can't stop him. i'm modifying my pelican to more adapt to my fishing and creating things for me to do. i started with a dash last year and have it almost complete except for painting. it contains a plate for magnetic antenna and ground wire, a belt loop for the clip on my handheld cobra cb, a gun holder, a spotlight holder a mount for my depth finder and a hole for the wires to go through, a cell holder, rod and drink holder, a magnetic strip for clippers etc. to cling to, ashtray, and is 36 inches across and marked to measure and underneath is a 4 port plug is for lights, depth finder, cell charger etc., and also a glove box...actually a large fanny pack attached under side. the dash is removable. i made new winds for anchor lines which are 50 ft. as to the others i had only held 25 ft. and smaller line. i made a new transom from slotted angle and is lighter and looks better to replace the ugly 2x4 i was using. i also am mounting a bow light and using the port under the dash to light it. the 4 ports btw run on a smaller battery. also to stable it and maybe stand or not worry about my 80 lb. hound getting excited, i am adding pontoons made from pvc. i was bringing them off the dash until i found the middle seat has a rod holder on each side and i don't use them and...perfect fit for the pvc to sit in, it's 1 1/4 sched 40 and stiff. i'll put a strap on the side so where the arm rests on the boat it will cinch down and keep the arm from going up and down. the pontoons are 4 in. and caps alone for the ends were right at $10...that was $40 right there and i thought about the spray foam. it filled the ends and just needs to be sculpted to a point and painted. now i looked at kevlar skids because mine showed wear after one summer. i thought...$100? then i saw the slotted angle in home depot and hmmm. yes i made a brush guard i guess, cutting grooves in the iron to allow it to bend i rubber coated it and put weather stripping between it and the canoe. i had dog chain...i ran from the front handle down through the angle up to the other side to help hold it up and thought once it's rubberized and painted it will look tough plus help stop wear on the front of the boat. also my seat broke out. bad news, they sent me a new one and i didn't see throwing the seat away so i put it with the front seat with a 1x6 underneath on each side holding them together for my brother's wide "bass". makes a good work bench also! i'll show pics of it all once they're all painted.

Weirdest Things You Ever Caught (Non-Fish)?
i went once with a friend and though i hadn't been in ages it still made my then wife mad i went. when i got home i was asked the same but in a cold voice, "catch anything?" i simply replied "i hope not!" (not recommended) and that was how the fight started.

4 X 4 Necessary For Bass Boat?
i don't trailer or go off roading, but i just prefer to have a 4x4. i can't justify having it and would love better mileage, but 4x4 does a lot when it's need. even some dirt roads when wet pulling a trailer can be bad. there's some snow and ice here and it helps with it, also if i just happen to slide off enough and lose traction it keeps me from looking like an idiot if i stop on the shoulder to pee and wind up with flashers on spinning.

Canoe Loading/unloading/paddling Solo
i have a pickup and found this and it is a heckava rack for the money and easy to install for those with trucks. it's easy to slide my pelican 15.5 on and off. i have considered the trailer at harbor freight as mentioned also, but don't want to deal with the tags and registration and all yet. i'm in the process of adding onto my canoe, i already had the dash board made and works ok. i have rebuilt my transom and went from a 2x4 to using steel slotted angle iron with a block of 2x4 on the mount side. made line reels for anchor lines using pvc to make like a wagon wheel and just reel in the rope with. now i have almost completed building my pontoons from pvc. i originally planned to mount them off the dash but just noticed the middle seat rod holders, one on each side are a just right fit for the mounting on each side. i did a test run on them but they weren't secured as i knew adjustments would come. i found to hold the pvc arms down on the side of the boat made it very stable. where the arms go out a strap will go over them and tighten to serve that purpose. also they slide in when moving if i want or need to keep from hitting them. i'll post pics soon, also mounted a stern light to run off the depth finder battery with a cig lighter plug in that plugs in the 4 terminal unit under the dash, which also is graduated across the top to 36 in. for a ruler, drink holder, rod holder, spotlight holder, 6' magnetic strip handy for clippers etc, a plate for magnetic antenna and copper ground that goes into the water, a section of strap on the edge for the hand held cb belt clip, shotgun/rifle rack for 1, bolt for my depth finder which i remove since i haul on the rack upside down. also am adding to it a sliding glove box underneath or a camo fanny pack for items. http://www.amazon.com/PICK-UP-RACK-650-Pound-Adjustable-Universal-Utility-Ladder/dp/B009VOQ05U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360303511&sr=8-1&keywords=pick+up+racks

Cabin Fever Sucks.
here on the arkansas-texas line we get so use to 70 degree weather in the fall that when december hits and usually brings winter here, it easily becomes way too cold. since Christmas eve it started to rain, then sleet, then snowed 5 inches Christmas day, then cloudy and cold and last night and today hard rain and 30 degree temps. not to mention last friday the fuel pump on my pickup goes out. still haven't been able to get it fixed. i have stole my son's car, walked to the store and am just about ready...i better not say. where i fish is 80 miles away, but even one lake closer at only 25 miles is alligator filled and in a canoe...i'd rather not. plus even going it's dang cold. this was my first summer to own my canoe and fish the way i use to. now i'm spoiled. i've even considered selling out and buying a large camper or small motor home and staying at the lake.

Does Rub Line Slime By Wild Game Innovations Work?
here's a trick i use and effectively...be ready! when the rut is about to start or has i start spraying doe estrus on the bottom of my boots about 100 yards from where i hunt. also about every 50 feet or so i'll spray it on top of a sappling so any breeze grabs it and sometimes a spray on the ground. when in the stand i spray a few shots around me to mask me, do a few doe bleats and grunts and rattle then stop and sit. i repeat in about 10 minutes. watch the direction you came because chances are you'll see a deer walking from that direction with his head down...following your boot tracks smelling the good stuff and hearing my calls his curiosity has him wanting it.

Post Your Carry Weapon!
i go loaded for bear! i don't have a permit yet, but will after the first of the year. here's mine...yes all 4 at the same time. just kiddin...i only own the .45 and the .22 now. the s&w 629 classic .44 mag was my first real pistol and had sentimental value but had to sell it while waiting for disability. the taurus .44 mag i just sold to buy the 1911. i don't carry but do usually have it in my vehicle.
-
New Auto...
i have owned a pistol since...actually i think i was born with one in hand and i've had several both good and bad. i have always loved six shooters and had two revolvers over the years a s&w 629 classic stainless .44 mag and recently sold a taurus tracker .44 mag. when i sold the taurus i had one thing in mind...a 1911. i've always wanted one and see them as american as the six shooter. just looking at academy sport's guns in store and online i looked at 1911's which get very pricey starting with the first one you see. they had a few that were less and then i saw the Citadel model they had and almost fell over at the price...$499.00. they had 3 models all M-1911 in full size, compact and a Wounded Warrior Project which was same as the others but had the WWP logo of a soldier engraved on it. after holding it and doing research on it, while it is an import from the phillipines, it is an american based company and i was impressed by the feel of it and the reviews (not by owners alone but mostly by critics who did thorough studies on it at the range) enough that i bought one and got the full size M-1911 model .45 ACP and i love it. i don't have a permit yet to carry but i will and though this gun is full grown it still hides easily and isn't too big. it has a parkerized finish which i agree with critics on and the novak sights as both leave a little to be desired, but other than that as i said i love the gun. going to try and go to the range this morning and will post results if so. the gun shoots like a gun is suppose to. it comes apart in seconds. i am looking to start reloading to save money because this dude is fun to shoot. others owning more expensive and true, probably better made guns may look down on it but i say again i love the gun and it is a very good quality firearm.

Lure Painters/builders
ok i'm not a seasoned lure maker by any means and haven't actually made lures other than buying unpainted jigs and being creative. i tried several paints and didn't have much luck. i found something that does if you can get to walmart late when no one is there. nail polish. i know...but it gives a variety of paint colors that are made for fishing lures. i started with a candy apple red with a curled or split tail grub and caught a few and bought more including the bright greens and limes. the glitter filled are good also and in the water have a nice scale look. i carry several in my tackle box and even touch up or add to other lures. it goes on easy, comes with a brush and dries in a flash.

Any Other Fishers Who Prefer Canoes?
last spring i purchased a pelican 15.5. it's my first canoe and i grew up in a 14' flat bottom with a 9 1/2 johnson, then an 18 evinrude. my dad had a ouachita stick steer bass boat and a roughneck which both i used as my own. i started paddling the canoe but soon bought a minn kota motor and added a home made transom. i added front and rear anchor line locks to control them from my seat. i added a cgi sitbacker seat, i made a dash boars that slides in and locks in place and slides out. my rod holder is mounted so they stick out the back of the boat out of the way. this winter i have designed and am adding stabilizers i'm making from pvc. i have learned that in a canoe standing isn't done, if you cut the motor sharp from a start make sure you are positioned in the seat at to why adding the stabilizers. i'm making them so they attach to my dash and slide out to fish then retract to the sides when moving and serve as anti tip devices. i say all of this because i have enjoyed the canoe so much and learned as i go things to do to make fishing easier, safer and more productive. it's not the best canoe, i bought it at academy sporting goods for $279. that is a heck of a price for almost any boat and other sites are as high as $500+. i love fishing from this boat and it gives me something to do adding to it and so on. i was loading up to leave and it's a mess and changes have been made.

Favorite Deer Calibre
i've owned .243, .270, .308, .30-30, 30.06 and i hunt in central arkansas which is wooded, some open clearcuts but most shots have been within 100 yards and here is how i'd rate these... 1. .270, flat, hard, fast and if i get a long shot it can drill a deer with enough kill at long distances. plus in brushy parts it has enough speed and power to clip a twig and stay on target. 2. 30.06. in brush it has enough to cut through if it hit something, knockdown is unbeatable. long shots are very make able if you know your gun. 3. .308 - 30-30, to me is a toss up at which you want to shoot. .308 has a little more distance than the 30-30 but that many deer hunters and cowboys can't be wrong. i think 30-30 and that's a lever action, usually short, quick to handle and is best for short range and in cover. 4. .243, 4th on my list is not fair. i had a single shot .243 with a 3x9 on it and i loved the gun. i may own another soon and that's because of the trust i have in it. dead on for accuracy and speed is just unreal. shoot a stop sign and it looks like you used a drill (no i haven't but have seen one's shot by others). the range i'm not sure it has one...very far. my only thing is where i hunt i don't get many long shots. .243 is not a woods round as is easily deflected. the man who taught me about hunting/fishing most of all besides my dad told me the best deer cartridge ever was the lr .22. .243 isn't much more lead wise. 5. 12 gauge, last and again just because i usually have a rifle to use, but a 12 ga. slug is hard to beat within 100 yards. unbelievable power.

Strapping Your Phone In On Bumpy Rides On Windy Days
might want an app that gives lake conditions so if it's that rough you know to stay home! otherwise the otterbox or defender case with velcro or the box shown or bag. mine is in a defender case and inside a dry bag.

Winter Fishing
i unloaded my canoe from it's rack above my truck last week sadly. i deer hunt also and will be spending time with that but after that when the temps hit the low 70's here i'll be putting it back and going. on the ar.-tx. line here some of the best bass fishing is when temps hit the upper 60's and 70's here, which in december isn't much if at all, but mid-late january and february we do see several days with it up. of course here, you never know, a foot of snow or ice one day and low 70's 4 days later. i didn't get my canoe until late spring this year and i will be hitting it earlier this spring.

Kayak Or Canoe??
i have this pelican 15.5 and usually am alone and have had my brother go and i love it. i also have an 80 pound hound so he can go too. the canoe is not top of the line or one of the best. it is well made, a few things came up but nothing major. i added a transom and a minn kota, it came with a kayak paddle and it will scoot. i'm in the process of adding a dash now that is removable. it weighs about 70 lbs. and i load mine on a rack on my pickup. i don't know how academy sells it at this price, look else where and it's at least $400 plus. http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_242901_-1?N=670789616

Power For A Hummingbird 150
i have a fuse, i've been using it off my trolling motor battery which has a box i made with external posts and in the end a cig lighter plug which is where i have been plugging it in. i've been going at times when it was still dark and used the plug for a flood light. i bought two 6v lantern batteries and have a port that was in my truck. i'm wanting to mount the port and fish finder on a dash i built for my canoe. i got it to come on once and my hand held cb was plugged in and worked. i wondered about the 8 AA, how do they connect?
