Crappie Fizzing?
It's not a bass question, but I would like to know this as it can come up time to time fishing for bass. today the water temp was 56-58. I was fishing 30-40 ft of water. I got a good size crappie on my jigging spoon. When I try to let him go, he almost looked like he was dead. He was non-responsive. He didn't look like he was blown up. He didn't want to swim and when he finally left, he came up belly up 30 sec later. I scoped him with my net. Then he started swimming down like crazy in my net. I put him out of the net and he dashed down to the deep. I am guessing this was swim bladder issue and went into almost like shock state(?). Can crappie be fizzed the same way as bass?

Roaches In Boat
Have you thought about using those roach traps with bait and glue in a paper container? Less dramatic and can be used for longer term maintenance purpose too. Edit: nm, didn't see retiredbosn had already mentioned.

Shimano Saraha Size?
I have Sahara 2500. Only time I felt need for deeper spool of 3000 was when I let my nephew use my set up and he constantly tangled the line when we went night fishing. Either one should be fine normally. I might personally consider 3000 the next time as having extra backing won't hurt.

Furthest Casting Low Profile Reel?
I'm on the market for another reel and you got my attention. Are you referring to the Type-R? Does your comparison include any Shimanos?

Furthest Casting Low Profile Reel?
I guess I was other way around. I thought I was casting around 40-50 yard range, until I run out of the line with Citica fully spooled with 65 braid in ideal set up. It should hold 80 yards, so I must be casting 80+. Anyhow, I don't like I run of the line and considering if I can get by with 50lbs. I fish very different type of water with limited number of gear, so the balancing and getting by with what I have is the way of my fishing life.

Shimano Reels Personal Reviews
I have Saros and Sahara. Both of them are one model back by the way, but they are from the same model year. When I bought Saros, I went "wow what a nice reel". Then I picked up Sahara on sale as spare. Guess what, I didn't feel that much difference to justify the price difference between the two. The next time I would just get Sahara. It's good enough for my spinning needs.

Is Side Scan Worth It?
Totally! I just got 998 and today was the test drive. I went to this lake I fished 4 times in the past. While I thought I had a good understanding about the lake with a map and sonar before, I found much more about the lake in short amount of time today. I'm still learning. Next outing my goal is to spy at least one fish on SI image (it wasn't able to today).

Winter Clothing - Outerwear
Thanks Mytoyzfishing. I called the company who makes them(?) this afternoon. They said do not get the Arctic Armor, it would be too warm. He recommended to get their light version.

Winter Clothing - Outerwear
Sorry to wake up one month old thread, but I would like to ask those of you who own Artic Armor suit. What would be the highest air temperature that you would wear it without getting too warm? I'm thinking about getting them, however I am afraid it might be too warm for our climate. In the winter months, the temp around here is from high 30's to high 50's,

Getting Up For Fishing
I thought this thread was to ask if people having difficult time waking up...I do! And for some reason I wanted to hear others to say the same. Anyhow, like ww2farmer, getting more hours is the motivation for starting early for me from this time of the year.

Upgrades On Reels
The cheapest upgrade is to flush out the factory grease from the spool bearings and put a drop of reel oil. It increased a casting distance a little bit for all of my reels that I have done so far, but what I appreciate more is the smoother and lighter feel of the spool spin when I cast.

Creature Baits ?
I have the same question as yours, so I just rotate my plastics and let fish tell me. Some days, slim profile of stick bait works better, and other day bulky profile of creature works better. I go by the bulk more than length of the bait. Also I've noticed I have better luck with creature baits on certain waters than others for the reason I don't know. As long as I catch fish, I'm good.

Bass Fishing With A Bad Back.
I have bad back. For me, fishing itself never gives me pain, actually it gives me relief cause I am standing more than usual. Only things I need to be careful is lifting things before and after fishing. Like iabass, I vote for exercise and stretch. The exercise I am talking about is light exercise and the boarder between stretch and exercise becomes blur. Doing daily yoga, even when you are feeling well, religiously helped me tremendously.

Hard Wiring Hds To Battery
KevO, I don't know much about boat wiring, but I too feel something is wrong. Do you have a volt meter? If you don't have one, then you can probably find a cheep analog one at Radio Shack kind of place. I would give a quick check before spending time doing the work. Check the voltage changes at the battery when you crank it and compare that with voltage change at the fuse box. If those two reading looks the same and your unit is still going crazy, then changing the wiring between the battery to the unit doesn't solve the problem.

My Three New Lews Spinning Rods Arrived
ww2farmer, you know the Shimano's life time warranty is not limited to the store you bought, right? I even broke one I bought off of eBay and they didn't care. I went to BPS first and was surprised that they don't honor Shimano's warranty. I was really really surprised. They actually told me to go other small time local fishing store.

Academy Black Friday Sale
I have an item that I would like to get from Academy. Do they usually have Black Friday deal like all fishing item XX% off kind of sale, or only selected teaser items?

My Pfd Testimonial.
Andrew, I am so glad you are okay. I am glad we are hearing your story from you! Hannover_Yakker, very nice system. I have to think about good system for myself. Here temp changes a lot through out the day. I used to be a die-hard advanced windsurfer. In my area, the sea water is so cold even in the middle of the summer. I thought about safety all the time and think through the escape plan. Now I have to admit that I am way too relaxed about the safety. I wear PFD 100%, but I am not as prepared as you are for cold water. I wear synthetic pants and shirts mostly when I fish, but still wear cotton socks, cotton underwear and sometimes cotton outershirts. BTW: do you wear nylon underwear. Hopefully that does not resemble nylon stocking or anything

Cheap Options To Get Off The Bank
Fishing Daddy, Have you considered frameless pontoons? Sea Eagle has nice little thing which can be set up very quickly. That would have been the route if I didn't care about being able to take co-angler. Last season, I got myself an 11 ft. inflatable raft. I needed something, I can bring without trailer, not needing garage to store, something I can fish standing and something I can use in rather rough (not very rough) conditions. I looked at the different options, tube, pontoon, kayak, canoe. The raft basically met all of my requirements, plus I can take other person, it stays dry and pretty stable even with lots of wake by wakeboarders. I dismissed canoe because I was worry about stability with wake/wave in the water I fish, but maybe with set up like yours it would have been okay.

Road Trip 2014?
Thanks, Jeff. I hope I ended up going there! BTW: The Member Map section is not working, at least for me. I didn't see myself, so I tried the Add Your Location button, but I got an error message saying something about google location problem. I tried entering my city, nearest major city, full street address...all go the same error.

Road Trip 2014?
I had no idea what the road trip was, I thought it was some sort of trade show Never been to that part of the country. This might be perfect way to use my airline mileage (I had a tread about that). How much of advanced notice do you usually give?

Cheap Options To Get Off The Bank
Nice! Do you disassemble this and car top? If so, how long does it take you to put them together?

How Long Should A Bass Rod Be
I agree it is all personal preferences. Mines are.. If I were to get only one rod, or first rod and it can be baitcaster, then it will be 7'3"-7'4" MH, fast action for all around performance. If I were to get only one rod, or first rod and it has to be spinning, then it will be 7'3"-7'4" M, fast action for all around performance on the light side of the spectrum. If I can get more than one, then I'll start with above two and the next one would be 7' H fast action for heavy cover. Again, it is all personal preferences. skelotor is right about what's common preferences. I'm on longer rod side (for most applications.) Hope this helps.

How Do Bass Eat Spinnerbait?
Thanks, speed craw. His video is awesome! There were several footage of bass eating spinnerbaits. A couple of them they attacked only the jig/skirt part and other couple of times they inhaled the whole thing in their mouths. It didn't appeared to be dependent on the size of the fish. One of them were attacked from the front of the spinnerbait and put the whole thing in his mouth! Also it is amazing how fast fish moves compared to the speed of spinnerbait. After watching these, I would think shorter blade arm or longer jig head arm might be beneficial for increased hook up rate. Something I will experiment with.

How To Remove The Spool Pin Of Abu Garcia Sliver Max
Thanks TiNuts. My eyes weren't good enough to notice those. I just finished clean out of two more reels. I'll try this on the next one (which is soon). BTW, one of the reel I cleaned out was 70's Shimano BM-1 (Japanese market version of Lews' BB-1). I was surprised to see the bearing used looked the same as the bearing used today on Shimano's. One thing I noticed was the clip to hold the bearing in place was something looked like what they might use in automobile, not the octagon looking ones I find in today's reels.
