  1. First training ride today- After getting my bike ready to ride after a year long hiatus which included replacing tubes, tires, cleaning and lubing the chain and cleaning the bike itself I was ready to go on a ride. I was planning on doing a ride i have done a lot that is a pretty easy ride of around 15 miles or so. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your perspective i missed my turn and added on around 2 extra miles. Ended up being a 17 mile ride that I finished in a shade over an hour so not to bad. I could have probably gone another 5-10 miles if i ate the GU pack in my jersey but I decided against it, especially considering the headwind i had for the last 8 miles. All in all it was a good ride and it felt good to get back on the bike. And if you want to donate, every little bit helps. http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/VARBikeEvents?px=4544103&pg=personal&fr_id=22247
  2. depends on the state some states require it others you have the option
  3. Sorry but union non union or whatever this guy has issues that haven't impacted those at his workplace until now. I don't care if he walks to work 8 miles, it is because of choices he has made and until the situation you mentioned it didn't impact others than himself. You need to report it and report it now. I wouldn't care if he lost his job because he is the one losing his job, not you for caring about everyone else. Maybe that will be the wake up call he needs but i doubt it but at least nobody else at your job will get hurt.
  4. Well in my years of being an instructor I always found the faster action rods easier for a newbie to learn on. I do agree that slower rods teach you to feel the rod load but most people starting out have problems with that so i always taught them to watch the rod load and that would help to begin the muscle memory needed to cast whichever rod they were using at the time.
  5. I agree with the faster action rods being easier for a newbie to learn on because most, including myself after over 10 years of fly fishing, tends to move to quickly and the faster action rods are more forgiving in that aspect. With bass you usually aren't protecting lighter tippets either but with trout i prefer a more medium action myself for most cases. As far as playing a fish from the reel i guess it depends on how big of a fish. I have landed 20" largemouth and 25"+ rainbows and browns and never touched the reel unless i already had the line pretty much at the spool or i was using lighter tippet and had to chase a big fish around. I have seen many people try and hold the fish while reeling in the rest of the slack lose more fish than i can count so I prefer to use the strip the fish in method for the most part. There is so much shock absorption in a fly fishing set up that it makes it easier than in a conventional set up. I have used the reel on a few of the larger carp i have caught. The one problem with a beginner set up is to get a reel with a decent drag bumps you up in price point. I will completely agree that most pre made combos are pretty much worthless unless it is one that is put together by the shop. I know Sage use to put together combos and they were pretty good, including the lines, which i am pretty sure they were Rio since they are both the same company (I think anyways).
  6. I use pegged texas rigs and flukes/stickbaits mostly. You either have to get through the top layer of pads or fish on top of them really. Weightless flukes tend to come through the pads a little better if you can get them down through an opening though. Many times i wil lswitch from a stick bait to a fluke becasue the stickbait keeps getting hung on the pad stalks.
  7. To bad they don't have the st croix deal they ahd going on last year...buy 2 get one free pretty much. I have been using the rage rods for over a year and have been pleased with their performance and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking in that price range. To me, they don't fish nay different than the avid that i own and since i prefer a split grip style that helps too.
  8. Notice i said like the look not to own I had a dark green Jeep and that was bad enough so my current Jeep is silver....hides the dirt real well
  9. This is a great time to get someone involved in fly fishing. Last year i went out while they were spawning and on one stretch I caught 45 sunnies on consecutive casts and many were the same fish multiple times.
  10. It's a little different in a sports franchise though as when you buy the team you assume the rules that come along with team ownership. I equate it to an HOA. You buy a house with an HOA and they can tell you what kind of mailbox you have or color to paint your door. If you don't like it then you shouldn't buy a house there. The same goes with the NBA, in essence you are a sub contractor to the league and if 3/4 of the owners say you shouldn't be there then you are forced to sell. THe NBA also has the authority to take over control of a team in extreme circumstances like they did with New Orleans. The guy is a sleezeball confirmed racist and paid the highest judgement ever in a housing discrimination case but this is the first time anything involved the league directly and was proven by their research. I fully expect this to get to the point of litigation and will eb lengthy as he has a history of long drawn out court battles. He should sell the franchise that he bought for about 12M in the 80s and sell it for what it is worth according to Forbes at 500M and go buy an island somewhere.....
  11. I always liked the black on black look....nice looking truck.
  12. I speak English and am planning on learning Spanish, especially since I will hopefully be teaching next year and even though around here the ELL population is pretty low, it will still help.
  13. I fish shaky heads very often and they have repalced a good bit of what used to be my texas rig times. The shaky head is easier, for me, to keep contact with the bottom and my hook up percentage seems a little better. I also find it easier to maintain contact with the bottom on a shaky head because the bait and weight are connected. A texas rig is way better in cover such as grass or wood though and won't get hung up as often, especially if you peg the weight. I also rig pretty much any plastic on a shaky head with some of my best fish being caught on a baby brush hog or 4' & 6" stick worms in lakes and on the river i'll use a football head style and use craws and the smallmouth seem to like them.
  14. Wow, i cannot believe she is being held liable in some people's minds. Doesn't matter what she was there doing or what her motive was/is, dude is a moron plain and simple, just so happens he is a rich moron.
  15. depends on where you get hooked. A nice meaty area will be more sore in my experience than in a finger. IF the area is swollen, warm to the touch or abnormally red, go to the doctor and have it necked out. It may be getting infected and the doc will tell you that and give you some antibiotics or something if needed.
  16. I disagree with this one completely. College athletes, and i am assuming Division I here, get paid in the form of a scholarship and promote themselves in high school just get a scholarship. I think we are confusing begin a pro, aka getting paid enough that it is all you do, with competing at the highest level. I would also argue that just because you get paid to do something you love and enjoy doesn't mean it automatically turns into not being a sport anymore. Now back to the original question....I know Alton Jones is a day trader and even does classes and clinics on how to do it and be successful.
  17. How did she not know before you got married how into it you were? and also, the whole asking her to sit down because of bright colors thing was a completely bad move as you basically were telling her she was a nuisance for being out there, even if that wasn't your intent that is how she took it. On a side note, that whole bright colors thing is just an excuse. I had a bright red jacket that i wore fishing many days and it never changed my fish caught.. if she doesn't want to go she isn't going to go....have you offered to go do any of her hobbies or interests?
  18. In most academic classes Wikipedia is not even considered a source. Now i have used wikipedia and then looked at the sources for their articles and used them and found some good info.
  19. Looks good and i have yet to hear a complaint about them. Also, am i not seeing your picture right in that you have the cross straps only through the blocks and around the boat so in essence the only thing holding your boat on the roof is the bow and stern tie downs?
  20. Yeah, that is probably true but i don't really have that problem too often here in VA
  21. If he crashes he will just blame it on something else anyways....
  22. they work for me on any day that ends in Y, regardless of the month
  23. Nightcrawlers are always good. You can also get some beetle spins. they seem to catch a bunch of fish and keep them actively casting and reeling.
  24. Also having a well balanced set up is way more important in fly fishing than it is conventional in my opinion. A few ounces more for a reel may not sound like much but depending on how that weight counterbalances your rod it could make all the difference in the world, especially in the heavier weights.
  25. Hmmm there are a lot of good rods out there. What I recommend is finding your local fly shop and talk to them. They will know what weight works best in your area. They will also be able to give you a heads up on flies too. As far as budget goes, spend 70% rod,20% line and 10% reel. The reel will pretty much be used to hold line.
