  1. happened on my 4th of 5th cast ever with a top water frog. it was still early and i was half asleep. then i realized i couldn't see my frog any more and i as im thinking "whats going on here?", this fat old bass just takes off with it. he ended up throwing the hook just as i got a look at him. kind of frustrating.
  2. hey guys. been having a lot of fun fishing for largemouths since i started 2 months ago but im thinking i wanna try and diversify a bit. ive seen a few big trout swimming around in my lake and i could use some tips. what kinds of rigs/baits should i use and what kind of areas should i look to find them in? are they going to be in the same areas as bass? id also like to try for some rockfish (aka striped bass). i used to go with my dad when i was a little kid but its been years and i dont really remember much. just remember that he had 2 hooks on the line and a weight at the bottom and we used peelers (papershell crabs) for bait. any other suggestions for bait? what size hooks and how heavy a weight? also will the rod im using for bass work? i think the rods me and my dad used were a bit more heavy duty. im using a shakespeare ugly stick. medium/heavy action i think with a 10lb line. any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
  3. so i was planning on heading out in the morning but then it ended up raining all afternoon today. ive heard that fishing after rain isn't always the best because the rain washes all kinds of stuff into the water that the fish feed on and then there isn't much of a bite afterwards. any oppions? do you think fishing after rain is worth a shot or just a waste of time? if you think its worth it, are there some baits that would work better than others in this situation?
  4. sam - sounds like you've seen a lot of cool stuff. im sure ill see more once ive spent some more time on the water. kyle - definitly wasn't expecting to hear that when i posted this but i think 'dead deer floating by' takes the cake when it comes to crazy bassin' gal - ive seen a bald eagle before but not while fishing. i was walking my dog on these trails by the gunpowder river in MD and it kinda swooped in front of us. it was awesome. i almost didn't believe it.
  5. i have pliers but i should probably invest in a gripper. and as far as the pickerel goes, im still kinda new to fishing so i haven't caught one yet. going fishing with my brother at loch raven resovoir in a couple weeks though and im pretty sure hes caught some there so we'll see what happens.
  6. i know some of you guys are from some pretty rugged parts of the country. i was just curious about some of the other wildlife you've come upon (or has come upon you) while out fishing. ive seen a few beaver swimming by and a turtle that had to be the size of a trash can lid but nothing too uncommon or dangerous. here in MD we've got like 3 poisonous snake species but i haven't seen any. i know my story is kind of ho-hum but im sure some of you have had some interesting expieriences.
  7. gottcha....had a feeling it might be something like that. thanks for the speedy reply.
  8. sounds shady to me...go with your gut instinct. like others said, id definilty distance myself from that guy and dont leave anything valuable in your truck. its sucks that you have to worry about that kind of stuff when your just out trying have a relaxing day on the lake. whats the world coming to? cant we all just get along and fish?
  9. i work for dominos too and since i always close, they let me take a pizza home every night. usually a buffalo chicken with bacon instead of onions. i like the thin crust or the brooklyn style better than the hand tossed crust. the chicken carbonara artisan pizza is good too. i like papa johns too but the closest one is too far to delivery. theres also this good place down the road called pizza empire. they have a surf and turf pizza with steak, shrimp and old bay. for frozen i like red baron or digiorno. also like those wal mart pizzas someone mentioned.
  10. so i was typing a reply to someones topic and when i went to post it, i got an error message saying i didn't have permission to reply to a hidden topic. then when i went back the topic was gone. just wondering what the deal was.
  11. thanks roadwarrior. i actually found your calculator right after i posted that. gonna use it next nice size fish i catch.
  12. everything ive seen come out of my lake so far has been been about 1.5 - 2 ponds. seen a couple probably a little closer to 3lbs but its not a real big lake (only 20 acres and about 5-7 ft deep). thinking i might try some new spots if i get a day or 2 off of work.
  13. i was thinking the gills but it seemed to me that it would end up hurtuing the fish and i definitly dont want to do that so im glad you said not to. getting the weight from the measurements sounds like a better plan. so is it just 'LENGTH x GIRTH = WEIGHT'? or what are the calculations?
  14. hey guys. sorry for the dumb question but i was wondering how to use a fish scale. the one i got is kinda cheap (it came with a fish cleaning kit i got at walmart for like 5 bucks). its made by berkley and its not digital. its got a hook at the bottom and pulls down on a spring which lines up with the weights printed on it. anyway, i wanted to how to get the fish on the scale. where on the fish should i hook it?
  15. tried a frog for the first time the other day and got a lot of strikes. gonna keep at it and work on my technique.
  16. thanks for the advice TourPT. ill keep that in mind. i usually get to the lake about 45 minutes before sunrise and its still pretty dark. hopefully next time i land a couple.
  17. for me i'd have to say a senko texas rigged/weightless. seems like the slower i fish it the better. think im gonna have to give jigs a try though after hearing so many people rave about them
  18. thats an awesome fish. i gotta start bring someone with me to take pictures. i suppose i could try taking one with my phone but id probably just end up dropping either it of the fish into the lake
  19. lol! that story was too great! welcome to the forum
  20. welcome to the forum. im from maryland too over here on the eastern shore. dont think there are any snakeheads around here but thats probabaly a good thing since they mess up the food chain and all that. plus being kinda inexpierienced im not sure i wanna be trying to get a hook out of something with that many teeth.

im new here too and i love it. its nice to have somewhere where you can get multiple opinions/answers to your questions. im learning a lot
  22. nice fish. i lost one about that size the other day. good job!
  23. this will be my first winter since i started fishing and i was actually wondering whether or not id be able to catch anything in the cold or not. glad to hear that its still possible because 3 or 4 months without fishing would have been excruciating.
  24. hi everyone. im joe from ridgely down here on the eastern shore. i just started fishing and ive been hitting lake tuckahoe a lot. im a closing driver for dominos and i dont get off til like midnight so i usually just stay up and hit the lake at sunrise for 2 or 3 hours a couple times a week. i like it cuz its really close to my house but the weeds around the shore are so thick that theres only a handful of spots where you can get to the water. anyone know any other good spots close to me?
  25. geeze...some of you guys have more extra stuff than i have actual tackle. aside from lures and hooks and stuff i got my line clipper, needle nose pliers, a good sharp knife and a stringer. i also have the fishing guide pamphlet they gave me when i bought my liscense. it lists all the local lakes and rivers and has pictures of fish for easy identification and the size and catch limits. but then again im new. all you expieriencd fisherman probably dont need something like that.
