Chickahomany River
Where can you fish the Chick in this area? Isn't it just a tiny stream up there?

Gillies Creek Dam In Henrico Va?
Bigbass, let me know if you'd like to meet up to check the place out. I've only kayaked it once but was able to explore the whole thing fairly quickly. I'd love to get out there with someone else more experienced. Freud, Ive tried some deep cranks, drop shots, and jigs. I guess deep water is just guess work without decent electronics? I did do a little more bank fishing the other day and was at least able to prove there are crappy in the lake:

Richmond Area Ponds?
Thank you both for the responses. WdyCrankbait, are you referring to Robious Landing Park behind James River High School? I had wanted to check that part of the river out but I heard the fishing wasnt too great. Do you normally go upstream or downstream from there? Is Tuckahoe Creek downstream worth checking out or is it too small to navigate? Sam, I cant seem to find the pond on Route 1 south of Hanover you are referring to. Any other landmarks around to help me locate it on a map?

Gillies Creek Dam In Henrico Va?
Alright, took the kayak out along with my new spinning setup and got skunked again. The lake is very deep in the center, and very quickly gets shallow (one foot at most) at the shore and towards the back of the lake. Houses with yards mostly surround the lake, so little structure/trees. I have very little experience fishing water deeper than 8 or 10 feet, so Im going to need to learn some new techniques. The whole lake has very little apparent structure and I dont have a fish/depth finder. I fished the points that were there and the two fallen trees I found. Got one good solid hit at one of those trees but that was it. Lots of bream were hitting the surface in some areas so I tried to fish around those as well. If anyone has any suggestions for a clear-ish, deep (>20 feet), small (19 acre) lake with no structure and steep banks, I am all ears. I want to figure this lake out because it so convenient and there is little fishing pressure.

Richmond Area Ponds?
I'm on the lookout for the same thing. I work in the West End and have been to Rooty a few times and got nothing. Only thing I saw were a couple carp near the shore. I've also tried the two little ponds at Deep Run Park. They are really small and I didnt get any bites. I dead see a dead bream at the dock though, so I guess something is (was) alive in there. Every other body of water I can find on a map out here is surrounded by houses/apartments. What are these small "rivers" you have fished?

Gillies Creek Dam In Henrico Va?
Well, went out today for an hour or so just to fish from the bank which is also the road you drive in on and the top of the dam. Water was clear and cool. Bottom appears to drop off quickly from the dam. There were tons of very sharp briars everywhere on the shore, which made moving and casting a challenge in some places. Threw a ton of stuff including spinners and cranks, couple jigs, a tube, senko, and a lizard. Got a few hits on the soft plastic lizard but didnt land anything. Ill probably head out later in the week with the kayak and explore if the weather agrees. If anyone wants to join me, let me know.

Gillies Creek Dam In Henrico Va?
Just in case anyone read this and was wondering, I found the name of the body of water is Lake Eastborn. Stopped by today and people were bank fishing off a dirt road that connected to the main road. I also found some pics of some guys launching kayaks and fishing on Kayak Bass Forum. Looks like I will be heading out there with the kayak ASAP to see whats up. Ill post a report if anyone is interested. Peace

Gillies Creek Dam In Henrico Va?
I see this body of water on the map in eastern Henrico. The creek looks like its called Stony Run or Gillies Creek. Looks like a nice little spot close to where I live. Just wondering if anyone has been there before or knows anything about it. Thanks

Pony Pasture On The James
Oh wow. I had no idea about Lake Rooty. I had read some posts about it but those were all a few years old, I was wondering why no one had posted about it recently. Know of anywhere else in that area that is publicicly accessible and has decent fishing? I was hoping Lake Rooty could be my new go to spot after work...

Pony Pasture On The James
Well, went out to Pony Pasture yesterday on foot and got skunked. I was out there from about 5 - 7pm wading around; throwing a crawfish crankbait and a jig. Last weekend I was on the James in my kayak around Maidens Landing and then Huegonot Flatwater and had two great days fighting smallies. I figured I need to find more places to fish that dont require hauling the boat around, so I thought Pony Pasture was a good place to start and I could at least catch some smaller fish. I read a few posts on here from years ago about places to fish at Pony Pasture, but I just didnt have any luck. The river was at about 4 feet and I stayed on rocks that were above water, didnt wade in anything past my knees really. I certainly didnt make it across the river to the Island, not even sure how thats possible. Anyone else have any luck there recently? Any tips on where to go at Pony Pasture? Does anyone know any other good small mouth spots on the James that can be accessed without a boat? I was thinking about heading to the Texas Beach area sometime next week. Today, I think Im going to hit Lake Rooty, try my hand at a pond instead of the river (and its nearby my work).

Powhatan Lakes Any Good?
Tartan that is crazy to hear about that catfish, sorry to hear you didnt catch anything either. Sam, thanks for the heads up about the cold front, thats really good to know. Sometimes it seems like their are too many variables in bass fishing: current weather, previous weather, sky conditions, temperature, time of day, time of year, body of water, structure/cover, fishing pressure, water turbidity and quality, top water lures, bottom water lures, lure size, lure color, lure noise, line weight, technique, etc etc. And even if you get everything perfect, this fish still might just be in a bad mood! Haha

Powhatan Lakes Any Good?
Well that works, I'll blame the lack of fish on the VGDIF haha Tartan, what's the news with powhatan lake? How was it and what's the story about the new structure? I actually have never been on a bass boat either haha, wish I knew someone in town with one. I go out on my kayak, I do have a second one though, although it's only 9 feet long and doesn't track too great...

Powhatan Lakes Any Good?
This thread seems to have meandered around a good deal, so I dont feel too bad going "off topic"... I went out to Chesdin today. Diascund is the same distance away so I basically flipped a coin. When I got to Chesdin (Dinwiddie side) I headed left out of the ramp and hugged the shore and fished every branch and arm of the river I came across. I went about a mile down following the shore, to where houses start becoming prevalent. Unfortunately, I got nothing all day. Spotted a couple nice looking bass (relatively low turbidity) but had no luck snaggen em. I threw mostly a senko and a Baby Boo jig. Im really new to soft plastics though, so it was probably mostly my own shortcomings that left me empty handed. Switched to a KVD Sexy Frog and an old trusty spinner bait for the last couple hours but still had no luck. There is grass every where on the shore, not too much structure, wasnt quite sure where to look for the bass. Disappointed to come back empty handed, but for not knowing the lake at all and not having any skill with soft plastics, it was kind of expected. Still a good 5 hours on the water though. Maybe next weekend I cant get to Disacund.

Powhatan Lakes Any Good?
I had heard about Lake Chesdin, probably from reading stuff on here. Didnt know about the marina letting you put in for free, so thats a great heads up (thats also only about 45 minutes from my place). I think I did some googling on Chesdin and there were mixed reactions as to how good people though it was, but I wont doubt you if you say its fun. I think I grabbed a copy of that publication you are talking about last time I was at Walmart, but just the list of places there or on the VDGIF is overwhelming without any context. My plan for tomorrow was to take the kayak out on one of the lakes or reservoirs around here. I went down to the James a few times recently (below the fall line), but without a proper anchor set up I found myself fighting the current all the time and that is exhausting. Hoping one of these lakes/reservoirs I can spend less time fighting currents and more time just fishing. I guess now I just have to decide where to go tomorrow, all these places sound like a blast.
