If you really want to fish shallow find some lilly pads, but while fishing deep, find humps in the lake and throw a 1 oz. football jig and bounce it along the hump, it really pays off but you have to be patient.

I use a Owner weighted twist lock hook 1/8 oz. , seems to work pretty well.

Try throwing a 7 or 8 inch curly tail worm, it's similar but presents a bigger profile.
