  1. got myself a Daiwa Presso 4pc ultralight over the holidays, haven't tried it yet but it seems like a pretty nice rod. very sensitive, cant wait to use it while creek fishing.
  2. I'm more of a river rat myself but a few that I've heard good things about are Rice Lake, Lake Nipissing, Kawarthas and of course Lake St. Clair.
  3. I have the same issue with two of my Speed Spools (posted a thread on here about it) and I have not fixed the problem. I tried contacting Lews to see if they would sell me a new set of gears but I have come up empty handed. For me it started after about a year of use and is really annoying in my opinion. Thing is, I have a Tournament Pro G by Lews as well and I have zero issues with gear noise. I asked Lews if they use different alloys for their higher end reels and they told me they're all the same gears in their casting reels. I find this hard to believe since there's clear visible differences in the gears (very shiny brass in Speed Spool and more of a matte finish gear in the Tournament Pro) and my Tournament has lasted longer without wear. I have flushed all spool bearings and made sure everything is cleaned and greased well and the noise still persists. I will definitely be following this post in hopes of a fix, even though I'm sure a gear swap would fix this as my two Speed Spools were smooth when I got them. Just sucks that they have become this way, in my experience at least. I have OCD when it comes to my fishing reels.
  4. I cast with my right and reel with my right. I switch up hands while the lure is still in the air. Why do I do this? No clue really, I imagine this is how I first started casting and it's stuck with me since. I've tried using left hand reels but I just can't get the hang of it
  5. Thanks for the input guys. I will definitely take a look at the gear teeth under a bright light as this is what I think the problem may be. Most of my fishing buddies just say I'm OCD with my reels but I keep telling them they're wrong. I have also e-mailed Lews to see what they can do for me regarding a set of gears. Not sure if they use a different metal or metal alloy on their higher end reels gears or not but I just find it odd how my Tournament Pro is still like new while my cheaper Speed Spools are both experiencing this problem, I guess this could fall under the "pay for quality" category. Also are the gears supposed to feel sharp or smooth on the ends? I am asking because the main drive gear feels smooth (almost sanded flat on the top of the teeth, if i'm describing this correctly) whereas the pinion has quite sharp teeth on it.
  6. Yes, i have put them back together correctly, they are great for maybe 2 days of fishing then they go back to feeling rough. I have tried many types of grease on them hoping to fix the problem from, Abu Reel Lube, Yamaha Blue grease, marine grade grease for outboard engine gears, Molybendum grease and all have had the same results. The only thing that makes sense to me, is my gears are worn. I just find this hard to believe because my other Lews reel is silky smooth. Yes it is a different model (Tournament Pro G) but the internals are basically the same with the acception of carbon drag and different gear ratio.

  8. Hey guys, I want to start by saying I have done many of my own reels already with excellent results and right now this reel has me stumped. I bet all my Northern brethren are getting ready to do what I am doing or have already done it, but that is a deep reel cleaning. So far I have done my Shimano Citica, Daiwa Fuego and Lews TPG. I am in the process of putting my two Speed Spool LFS reels back together and have come across both reels being rough/geary. Yes I have greased the gears and No I have not over greased it, for some reason no matter what I do these two reels feel rough and all my others feel smooth as butter, same with the Lews TPG. Now I have had these reels for a little over a year now and use them quite frequently (2 or 3 times a week) when I can. Would it be possible that the gear teeth have already worn out?! After lubing one of the reels in question it feels buttery smooth for about 2 outings before the geary/rough feeling comes back. Now I know you shouldn't have to re-lube your gears every other time you go fishing. That would just get annoying and my 3 other reels do not have this problem and can go months without re-lubrication. So I am hoping you guys have some suggestions or better yet fixes that will help me out. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  9. Like most have said, you cant go wrong with the KVD 1.5 or Manns 1 Minus. I've also been having luck on Bomber Square A's, Bagley's B2, a 6th Sense bait I cant remember the name of (Crush 65?). Picked up some ima baits that were on sale that I've never seen before called a BT-a 80SR, they claim to be a super shallow runner so I cant wait to try these out on the river.

  11. Dobyns 705CB Shimano Citica 30lb 832 Bandit Squarebill in Rootbeer
  12. its definitely a nice smooth and quiet braid but in my experience it frayed quite quickly compared to 832 or regular power pro
  13. Anyone heard of an "Atlantic's Frantic Antic"? Got one of these off my grandfather and they look identical to a Jitterbug despite being made by Atlantic rather than Arbogast
  14. I have two, two tiered tackle boxes (Plano 3700 Guide Series I believe). One for hard baits and the other for jigs and plastics. I keep my most used plastics that aren't heavily scented in the box and ones that are I keep in their original bag and put them in a pouch on my tackle bag. I haven't had problems with baits drying out either
  15. I just got myself a Dobyns Fury 705CB just before we got hard water and from the little bit of testing I've put it through I can see it being a great rod. Its my first "cranking" rod but i only ever carry one baitcaster and one spinning rod when I fish so versatility is key. I'd definitely check out some of their rods if your not set on a BPS Crankin' Stick.
  16. I use Mustad Duo Locks all the time, have never had one straighten out.
