  1. One of the best weapons a fisherman can have is confidence in what youre doing. A huge mistake that many tournament fisherman make is second guessing themselves and their game plan. Like what has been said before, fish what you know and are confident in. If you hear that there's a chatterbait bite but you've never fished em. Toss a normal jig.
  2. Hey guys, looking to visit Leech lake this year around mid June. Wondering if there are any other waters in Northern Minn that anyone would care to recommend. I respect the idea of not giving me your favorite spots and lakes. Also really enjoy pond fishing too!
  3. This is the diagram in my owners manual. The part that confuses me is the switch, because I don't have one and it didn't come with one. Do I need it?
  4. Not sure Preytorien if you're still following this topic but I'm curious. For wiring your trolling motor, did you just run the TM cable straight to the battery, and if so did you also have a circuit breaker attached?
  5. So I'm having trouble finding wiring diagrams for my Minn Kota Endura C2 which is the transom mount 55. I'm trying to wire it to a simple marine battery but now I see that I also needed a circuit breaker. This is all mentioned as a requirement but I Need to know if I'm going to need an additional set of wiring going from the battery to the circuit breaker. I'm purchasing the Minn Kota MKR-19 60 amp breaker as recomended by Minn Kota. So confused by all of this when I'm sure it's pretty simple.
  6. I love catching river smallies. They get so strong swimming in that current. You reel set a drop shot fish and a 1 pounder feels like a kicker until you get it to the surface
  7. I find that your feedback and opinions will vary depending on the area. Out here a lot more fisherman swear by sticks baits when talking about topwater. This doesn't mean that they won't work, just means less people have taken the time to zero-in on the correct presentation for them. I bet you can find a way to fish any bait in any season with success. Ask Doug Stange or Al Lindner. Those guys could catch fish with cement on a hook if they had to.
  8. Up in Montana the smallies will suspend on deep jagged rock ledges and we usually target them with Jigs and drop shot in the winter. And reiterating that fishing slow is crucial. The cool part about winter fishing is you will find yourself catching less fish, but they will be significantly larger on average than in any other season. Once the water starts warming up I'll toss lipless cranks in a brown or dark red and slay em.
  9. Those pros wail on those reels when a smallie hooks up. I thought Brent Ehrler was going to break off every single fish when they were on Long Pond. At least they don't need to worry about making their gear last like we do.
  10. I bought the BPS xps in blue it seems to fit the bill for shore fishing. I could imagine that you'd want a nicer pack if wanting to endure long hikes hauling a decent amount of tackle though as they have no support other than from the boxes you store in them. Fits your price range just fine though.
  11. Looks like it would either make a Palomar a little easier or waaaaaayyyy harder to tie . Would like to see a demonstration of multiple knots before buying. The idea however is great and I'm surprised this wasn't made 20-30 years ago.
  12. Starting out with basic techniques that are forgiving such as wacky rigging Senkos so definitely a pack or two of Gamakatsu (or other preferred brand) octopus hooks. You can fish this anywhere at anytime and it will produce fish. Would probably go great with a cheap spinning combo (try Pfeiffer/Fenwick) spooled with some midline copolymer or monofiliment line in the 8-12lb test range. Power fishing with crankbaits and spinners usually does one good as well but can prove less rewarding as they are fairly dependent on specific conditions. Where are you fishing?
  13. I'm neutral about this because around here we always tournaments on lakes that everyone seems to live on so fishing planted brush piles is a given and most fisherman will gladly show you them, therefore evening the playing field. It's a grey area subject but seems less viable when done by a professional fisherman, though I guess I can't say I wouldn't do the same if I had the chance to win a classic and solidify my position as a full-time pro fisherman.
  14. I guess if topwater fishing for Pike it would be best used as a leader. Go try it out in Canada and let us know.
  15. There's so many different ways to go about a limit. Lots of tournament fisherman who are worried about cashing a check would rather catch 3 huge fish than have to cull five 1 lbers. Personally I fish more confidently with 5 fish in the boat no matter how it's done and usually can catch 5 fish any day by beating the banks finesse fishing. I'm not a confident power fisherman and rarely will I switch to a crankbait or spinner bait unless either the boater is slammin' em or I'm on a lake that I know I can catch fish by power fishing consistently.
  16. He's an awesome deep fisherman and all around lake conqueror. He destroyed one of the qualifying rounds in one of the MLF episodes I was watching when they were in Maine. Caught 37 pounds of smallmouth in 2 hours.
  17. Aaron needs to find the leader boards within the next day or my first pick is torched. Casey Ashley and Andy Montgomery are doing just fine. Anyone else watching their picks so far?
  18. Yeah I'm sick of them cutting to boat feed and talking over the anglers while their talking. Only heard half of Howell's schpeal. ticked me off
  19. I'm really interested to see who will dominate the first day. Seems like most of the fisherman are getting completely thrown by that freeze. Any think a strong pattern is gonna emerge before day two or three? I'm also certainly nervous about my tie breaker weight now. Just hope Casey Ashley or Andy Montgomery finds a decent bite.
  20. My girlfriend already sees what I do as a sickness of obscure and incurable sorts so no excuse needed as long as I keep her spoiled too.
  21. Ordered a Fenwick HMX MF 7' to pair with my newly acquired Pflueger President!
  22. The walleye fisherman always seem to find those giant structural irregularities that Walleye share with Smallmouth and catch them constantly on accident! Then you try and replicate those results but get nothing when intentionally seeking for bass. Smallies are so crazy to pattern in Montana! Especially in all of the reservoirs where conditions change not only daily but hourly. Kudos to this guy. Seems like out-of-staters always catch the state record, wonder if he's a native.
  23. Depends on cover, water temperature, clarity, forage, and weather. What are the anticipated conditions? If that water hits a certain point pre spawn you can catch em on just about anything but considering there was ice I'd say fish slow. I'd recommend if you're power fishing use a slow gear ratio reel and crawl a rattle trap over depth transitions and ledges. If finessing I always start with a Texas rigged Zman lizard or move to a drop shot. Considering I'm in the Northwest spring conditions are slightly muddy and very cold initially so fishing is tough until that gets closer to 55°. Also depends on species. The smallmouth bite starts before the the largemouth because they are more active in colder waters. Biggest thing is to fish slow unless you know the bite is on. Enjoy!
  24. Yeah I've got the research down to a point where I can usually key in on patterns which allows me to predict which tackle to bring. I usually have rods for the following techniques; topwater (shimano curado e w/berkely lightning MH,) drop shot/shakey head (pflueger president w/fenwick hmx m,) crankbait/spinner bait (Abu Garcia Revo s w/ okuma reflexions mh,) worming/jigging (pflueger patriarch w/kistler pro series M,) and my misc extra set up which I usually take for SC Rigs and other setups (quantum kinetic pti w/ pinnacle perfecta DHC5 MH.) Luckily my inefficiency at local tournaments doesn't bother me because the boaters are all really laid back. My worry is when I start fishing as a coangler on the larger tournament trails where serious money is on the line and boaters can be a little less tolerant of coanglers. The nice thing is that we have established a certain etiquette that I follow to the tee and eventually I'm sure I'll get the hang of, just with more experience.
