  1. Oldschoolbasser, That's boss. Those plates- daaayum! I've 100% quit facebook for a while now, mostly to avoid my past. I guess now it's time to make an exception and bust open a new account. Those plates got me thinking. I do have a hawgtech on the right reel, but only went that route since the drag settings are much more sensitive on that gear set. After seeing that swept star, I plan on buying one for the middle one. I normally use the starless knobs exclusively for the ct conversions.
  2. Oldschool, I'm still new to the Abu world of 15-2500 class reels and I know you've got some nice gear too, but so far these are mine from this class. These are the 2500 c triplets. Left is a ct ( blakdogtackle dumbell) conversion, stock spool/brake assembly, bigger blocks, and 4.7. I plan on pairing it with an 8'6" medium light to medium just for giggles. I'd love the chance to cast a weightless fluke 40 yards when it gets warmer. Middle is a 4.7, avail idler/worm housing/4 brake/big blocks/stock spool. This will be paired with a medium 6'6" moderate fast; crank and frogging. Last one is an avail 6.0/idler/worm housing/4 brake/big blocks/2520 spool/mag assembly. I kid you not, with no tension on the mechanical knob, you can whip 1/8 on a 7' UL rod 40+ ft and then hear the mag slowing down everything to a pause when eventually the bait just stops at its tracks and drops straight down. The only way you can backlash is if you slap the water in front of you! Btw, you're right about the 5.3 pinion, it's a no go with purefishing. They did have the main gear though.
  3. Oldschoolbasser, have you messed around with the avail 1520 spools? Is the 4 point brake block on a 1500 with a 1520 spool better at casting 1/8 or less than the 2500 on a 2520 spool with the mag assembly and no brake blocks? I'm assuming there's not enough width on a 1500 spool to accomodate the magnet assembly seen in the 2500 series of the avail shallow spools.
  4. If you really want to cast 1/8th 30+ ft without feathering the spool, first off at least a medium light or even a medium (roll casted) in moderate action rod is necessary for accuracy. Reel, light line, preferrably 6 lb or less. Spool, ideally shallow and spool bearings are recommended to be flushed and lightly oiled. Braking systems- magnet based is smoothest, but dual braking will have more stopping force added on the first half of the cast as well.
  5. I know the rocks heat, especially today with clear skies for me, but it was still a dry cold. No baitfish whatsoever.
  6. I like fishing the banks against the wind. I slow crawl jigs, slow roll colorado spinnerbaits, and (occasionally) cast out blade baits with a medium paced retrieve.
  7. If you do your own servicing, go for a used one and stretch that bill. Someone out there is always willing to part with their diamond for a pearl. That being said, look at some Lew's. Also the older JM signature series (clean handle look) are built like tanks and have little flex on their frame. I serviced a pair this past winter, and was thoroughly impressed by the build and I own a handful of reels in the three century mark.
  8. Basshole banker here. When I'm not lazy, then it's yak attack. Any body of water I don't know when yakking, I'll bring the sonarphone (budget fishfinder, but better depth and water temp. gadget). As far as casting and fishing style, that changes by season. Sloooow pig n jig in colder times. Ripping cranks in spring and fall. Mid spring to early summer-frog time. Summer heat brings the mosquito repellant and topwater action. Casting, I've become a little more ambidextrous, still touching up on the left handedness for pitching.
  9. I regret not jumping on the Penn LPs when they clearanced. It's almost a sure bet that some of the internals are shared with its Pure Fishing cousins. Anyways, with Revos, the Inshore has the same pitch centrifugal system as the Revo S. For about $20-30 more, it can be upgraded to the STX's infini brake (dual brake system). Checkout PBSboatstore.com or inventorycheap.com; great prices and no worries if you're the type to do your own reel work. Now let's talk revo brakes; I find all the braking systems to be the same to dial into when roll casting or overhead casting, but when it comes to pitching, the magnet only system, magtrax, gets more distance. When I dail in, I zero out the brakes, including centrifugal off, crank down on the mechanical tension knob until the lure/bait drops about 1 foot/sec to 3 foot/sec (the latter when you get use to it), then set the dial to about 5. I adjust the dial accordingly afterwards for more or less. Pitch centrifugal in particular, I just adjust the mechanical knob and follow the rate of lure drop rule from above. Setting the brake blocks for it, I pretty much don't use it until I get to the 1/4 oz range when doing any type of casting. The magtrax, seen the sx, braking is wild unless you get an aftermarket shallow spool. It does get the most distance 1/2 oz and above, but I usually have that bad boy dialed in at 5 or above. Anything aerodynamic and greater than 1/2 oz, I'll have it dialed at 3 to zero brake force. Of course the mechanical brake rule setting, aforementioned, is followed. The biggest difference though are the hpcr bearings seen in the Inshore, Premier, maybe the stx, and above models. When I cleaned mine out, they get more spin time the comparable stock spol bearings in the SX. I loves me my ABUs.
  10. I have the Revo Inshore 3, it's main gear housing for the drag stack is slightly wider. By the way, how would you compare the ivcb-vi to the ivcb-iv brakes? I'd assume there's more stopping power but with the dial set to zero, I'd assume the premier would outcast for distance since its spool is heaver. Your elite though should pitch better with the shallower spool, but it does have more brake arms. Meh, I'm rambling. Thanks for the reply.
  11. I'm glad here some good reviews on here about the Komodo. I believe tackletour did one on the bigger model and that it has stainless steel main and pinion gears (plus some of the clutch components). But does it feel grindier than brass gearing? I got my eyes on this reel as my designated striper low pro.
  12. As I'm waiting on parts orders to complete my final two ambassadeur 2500c's, I started looking into maybe converting my revo 3 premier and stx into the elite 7 and 8 gear sets, respectively. It wasn't until the elite 7/8 became available on USDM that I finally got my hands on the schematics and noticed that like the revo 3 inshore, the main gear can hold the two metal click washers. It's all personal preference, but I love the way my revo 3 inshore's drag clicks like the old school ambassadeur c's and 1-3600c's. I know the yoke holder is the same across all the revos and that the mgx/ltx/mgxtreme/alt gearboxes are different than that of the s,sx,stx, and premier. All I'd really have to do for my premier (7.1) and stx (8.0) is just order the elite7/inshore 7.1 main gear, elite8 main gear, and the clicker washers involved. I could also dremel or mill my current gears to hold the clicker washers, but that's way too bold. Just wanted to share my thoughts with anyone else on here that has played around with upgrading and parts swapping their revos. I haven't stepped into JDM custom parts for my revo3's, but have done parts swapping with same gen models and lew's speed spool parts. I could talk all day about ambassadeurs and revos. Anyways, please share your thoughts, questions, revo/ambassadeur pics, or just chime in. I'll also share my revo/ambassadeur recipes as well. This MD rain and projected 60 degree weather should open some pockets soon enough. This fool is going to find some storm water ponds tomorrow. Haha.
  13. Meh, I called up Purefishing- no go on the pinion gear. Dang.
  14. It kind of sucks to have the feeling, be right about it, and then to find someone else on that same spot the next day. It also happens to be that someone fishing 50 yards down the bank from you the day before.
  15. Alright, so ereplacement parts has the drive gear, but not 21759. Guess who I'll be calling tomorrow, haha. Thanks oldschool.
  16. Alright, so to bump my own thread since I think I have a nice collective Ambassadeur mind-sets feeding it, do you guys know why the current ambassadeur records have side bearing plates when its on an ultra cast spool design. I can see reason for it like in the older c reels; shoot, most low pros, are designed that way (bearings riding inside the sideplates). It just doesn't make sense to me because as soon as you start reeling, the pinion gear snags the clutch washer (brake block) and then spins the spool which rotates on the bearings on the axle. I would think that if the spool tension knob was cranked all the way down, then maybe the axel will start spinning justifying the use of the side plate bearings. I just wished there was a low pro with the ultra cast spool design. I think that the oldschool promax and black max were like that.
  17. My first 2500c has all the fixins from Japantackle including the gear set, but the recommended drag setting on the 6:1 conversion is worrysome. So for the new (to me-fleabay) 2500c, I'd like the 5.3 set, but I can't confirm if the new brass replacement gear and pinion is 5.3 as seen on ereplacementparts. The parts order sales reps at Spirit Lake have no idea what the part it is. All their terminal tells them, is that the parts description says, "Main gear" or something really generic. Funny thing though, is that when my face lights up when the fedex truck pulls up, the package slip then has a more accurate description (ex: record 5600-main gear cog milled 6.8:1). It's frustrating not being able to get a reel tech to give me details like Lew's customer service; they'll take your number and call you back in a few.
  18. I'll take you up on that. I gotta pick your brain on abu know-how also on other spool designs, particularly the types seen in the Lew's Bbxlm. Thanks.
  19. Haha. Add a 100mm+ power handle= uber slow tuna winching for bass.
  20. That reminds me of my conventionals like my Grandwave. It's 6.1:1 which would actually probably hang with the revo rocket or the new zillion, but it weighs a rocket ton. Which reminds me, I gotta pair that baby with a 9' or 10' surf rod for the summer.
  21. This past winter was bad for me; caught the bug- Ambassadeur bug. Anyways, I'll finally cut off Ambassadeur fleabay buys to tonight's 2500c bid. My question is this, which reel foot stamps offer which gear ratio. I've got one 76, a 77, and now a 75. Now am I led to believe that the 2500c iar chrome schematic and parts order page on ereplacementparts provides the 5.+ gear ratio? Thanks in advance for any replies.
  22. Old, snapped rods can take it for the team, especially fiberglass rods. Jun from Japantackle even mentions that. I've even toyed with the idea of wandering around the arts and crafts section at your typical big box store; some of those beads might work. As far as magnets, I've played around with some cork knobs from Lowe's that I can trim down to shape with my dremel. I plan on creating an earth magnet retainer that should snuggly fit around the brake plate or left plate assembly on a 15/2500c (too impatient to wait for imports).
  23. Second that. You gotta work harder upstream to start, then 8 hours later, relax and drift back. Shoot, if it's fast enough, do a little trolling with no effort.
