Keeping soft baits in bag
I keep most plastics in plano 4700 boxes because I have had to many bagged plastics get an unnatural bend in them from being stored in a bag. Rage plastics stay in the bag, because their packaging is top notch. I have some Producto and slider worms from the mid 90s that have been boxed and they are like new. Never seen any issues with bagged or boxed baits deteriorating over time.

So after much research on this site I ended up picking up a St Croix premier MH moderate action rod from TWs BF sale. Not a big splash, but for my budget and needs spending 100 to 200 more there wasn’t enough benefit to pull the trigger. To be honest it was also difficult to find higher end rods in the moderate action I prefer as well. The big big surprise after reading horror stories of rods being broken during shipment, was how TW packaged the rod. The rod was in the original rap with bubble wrap on the tip and the tube weighed a ton and is probably darn near bulletproof;) Comparing this to how my rod from cabelas was shipped I would for sure order a rod from TW again and they included it in the free shipping.

The half heads are nice, I have a bunch, but wish the head were bigger like the Siebert morels, for use with thicker Ned baits like the Roboworms. I use both but find I gravitate to the morels more. Can’t beat the price on the Half heads though even when not on sale.

I use the original Morel jigs and they worked well with the Robo Ned which runs a little taller than a Zinkerz. I think Producto is ok, they are looking for Pro Staff on Twitter, maybe rebranding themselves? They are ridiculously cheap, the 75 buck order I planned out should last me a long time. Thanks for checking your email for me.

Sounds good. I am really looking forward to getting the 4" tourney grub to use for Ned rigging. I have some of their worms from back in the day and always thought they had a solid product.

Anyone see a cyber monday code for Producto? My father in law may be getting some baits for me and if there is a way to save him money, I always try to do it.

Through a combination of bad luck turning into good luck, I will end up with a Gen 3 Revo S (left handed, was supposed to be right), Gen 3 Revo STX, and Gen 4 Revo SX under the tree this year for under 200 bucks. Pretty sure the left handed S won’t be a problem since I use spinning reels a lot, and lets me find out if I like left handed baitcasters.

Need quick answer on Abu reel
Cool I am going with it, being a 6:6:1 gear ratio pretty much seals that it is Gen 4. Thanks, can’t wait to try it. Also have a Gen 3 S and a Gen 3 STX that I got for 100 for both under the tree. Think I did pretty good this year on reels. Thanks for your replies.

I can get an SX for under 100, so that is awesome thanks, although it may be a gen 3 not sure how to tell. The SX is on Academy, and it looks exactly like the Gen 4 on TW.

If I can get a Revo ALX for 105 should I do it? It is new, not sure if 3rd or 4th Gen.

Just a stock up purchase on Black Friday. Some Rage Manaces and some Suffix 832 line that will hopefully get me to finally change out some line on some of my reels. I think I have taken the fact that braid lasts a long time to a new level. Also so got a spool of the suffix Flo Orange performance braid for my jerkbait rod. Hoping this will speed up my learning curve on detecting the slack line strikes, so I don’t miss as many fish. We don’t do the stores, but figure tackle warehouse people work normal hours and have Thursday off. Guessing the sale kicking in on the website is just preprogrammed so hands off for them.

November 23-26 Nines sunglasses is running 20% off on their site through cyber Monday with the code NINESDAY20

Sad day for my spinning reel collection
At first I was like no way, these are some ugly reels lol, but the fish they caught were better than solid over the years. Trying not to be a hoarder, but just can’t pitch stuff that still works well. Awesome idea Now I have graduated to a couple of Presidents which I love and a couple of Daiwa Regals, and I do have spare bail springs I carry having busted them on an older Regal and on the new one too. I think what makes them special to me is I got them when we were newly married and struggling, and shelling out roughly 30 for the Cattera would be like me looking at a 300 dollar reel now. I got lucky in that some bargain gear allowed me to fish and fish well for a lot of years.

Sad day for my spinning reel collection
I have upgraded my spinning reels enough that my Shakespeare 10-15 year old excursions x 2 and Cattera are going into storage maybe to never be used again. Usually a 20 buck reel wouldn’t get much love but these reels have hundreds of fish on each of them and never had a failure between them, and they would be ready for more if I hadn’t upgraded last year. Would be curious if the excursions of today are as good, or if I just got lucky with the 2 I bought:).

Are most mid and high end rods fast or extra fast action?
This, I can’t believe that an extra fast rod gives you more feel than a moderate action of the same material. It will of course put more pressure on the fish a fraction of a second quicker on the hookset, but I don’t think it is enough time to make a difference. My one extra fast spinning rod is rod is horrible for pitching 1/4 ounce and under plastics, my accuracy and consistency goes way down with that stick. I should almost sell it, but it would be a good vertical jig rod for eyes. I just am am surprised that is what everyone wants, or as you said the manufacturers may be driving us to this conclusion even though it isn’t the right one for some of us.

Are most mid and high end rods fast or extra fast action?
I must be an oddball or creature of the cover I fish. I fish a lot of vertical cover like reeds and docks on lakes and a really rocky shallow stretch of river, and love the moderate action rods for finesse plastics. I feel they really help me put the hurt on them and pull them out of the cover before they wrap themselves up and get loose. With the extra fast St Croix spinning rod I find that I tend to baby the fish, and even though it is rated for light lures the casting accuracy really suffers on those 15 to 20 foot pitches. Being a pretty good walleye jigging stick, helps with bass fishing too, because you instinctually know when to set the hook without feeling the fish, because you can tell the bait just isn’t dropping the same. I am not perfect of course, but have had some nights where I was on fire, knowing just when to set the hook even though I felt nothing. Line watching can make a huge difference when fishing for bass. In my head I have a clock of what it should take a lure to hit bottom, if it stops before then, I set the hook, more times than not I am hooked up. In these situations even the most sensitive stick in the world wouldn’t let you feel those fish hitting. Honestly for spinning rods, ugly sticks have been really good to me over the years. The are tough as nails and very accurate when pitching light plastics. Sensitivity isn’t great, but fireline improves that to a point I am comfortable with. Sorry for the rambling response, could be the Friday night bourbon;), but I really think it is me figuring out what I need based on the cover I fish and my personal style of fishing.

Are most mid and high end rods fast or extra fast action?
Who has good composite rods? Honestly my go to cranking rod is the fiberglass baby blue wright mcgill clunn square bill rod. That thing just works great, gonna be a sad day if anything ever happens to it. The only thing it gives up is a bit of sensitivity compared to my Avid X or even my older cabela's prodigy sticks. Would love to find that action in a more sensitive stick.

Are most mid and high end rods fast or extra fast action?
I would love a moderate action 5'6" medium power rod, I would pay good money for one of those if it existed. I fish a lot of reed beds, shorter casts, and that rod length would allow me to do that underhand roll cast easily to get spinnerbaits, jigs, and cranks to land softly. I really think that sometimes the manufacturers forget about us folks fishing out of small boats or kayaks and instead create products for the few that run bass boats. As for loading the rod properly I agree with you. Folks that use baitcasters should work with a fly rod for a while, and the would learn how much line speed you lose by not allowing the rod to properly load. I feel that with my setups I can easily cast 1/4 ounce and under cranks and the 3/16 ounce spinnerbaits I prefer without backlashing because of my flycasting background and properly loading the rod during the cast and not overpowering the rod.

Are most mid and high end rods fast or extra fast action?
The bummer for me is that I fish out of a 16 ft deep V. My wife already complains I almost catch her on the backcast all the time (Father in law doesn't complain, so guessing it isn't as close as she thinks;) )and it has the high sides to boot. I try to keep the rods 7 foot and under because the boat:)

Does anyone know if Academy does a percent off deal for Black Friday, or just what is in the flyers? Also curious about the Producto site? My father in law is getting me an order big enough to keep me fishing plastics for a long time, so saving a bit would be awesome.

Are most mid and high end rods fast or extra fast action?
A while back when I was compiling a list of brands of mid and high end rods that I could upgrade to, I found that 90% of them were fast or extra fast action. This for me was a no go because of the way I like to fish, I have gravitated to moderate action rods even in spinning gear for plastics. I have found that for me a moderate action rod I can cast further, more accurately, and it is easier to keep a fish buttoned on, I also use either braid or fireline on all my reels with a flouro leader on most. The one extra fast action St. Croix Eyecon spinning rod I have, I pretty much hate it, but do use it when pitching plastics in the 10 to 30 foot range. So are these rods fast/extra fast due to the better composites used to make them? Knowing a little bit about carbon fiber, guessing that as the graphite grades out better it means it is lighter and stiffer?

Academy promo code question. I got a promo code when there was an issue with my order. I have no clue what it gives me, but wonder if anyone knows if the promo code would work with the BF sale?

Your Favorite Rod and Reel Brands
My struggle to upgrade baitcasting rods forced me to give up, because I use braid on all my baitcasters and like a more moderate action. I really feel this allows me to keep fish locked on even with lipless baits. What I found is the majority of rods 150 and up were fast action sticks that while more sensitive, won’t have the forgiveness I need with braid. Starting to to wonder if it is more difficult to get a moderate action out of the graphite used to craft the higher end rods.
