Bad Frog Experience Please Help
Use braid, 50-65lb. Also, wait until you can feel the wait of the fish. Much like setting the hook on a t-rig or jig, you set the hook when you feel the fish. When they blow up on it they might not necessarily have a hold of it. They can miss or grab just a corner or edge of the frog and bring it down in the water before gulping in. DO NOT be discouraged. It is hard for everybody to wait for a hook set on a frog, the blow is exhilarating and it gets the blood pumping. Braid and wait for the weight. TC

Summer Jerkbait
Where I live up north we have clear water pretty much all year. If there is wind, I will probably have a jerk bait tied on. In the summer I tend to lean towards floating jerk baits and jerk baits that dive deep. Give it a try, it won't hurt anything and you will have learned something either way.

Do You Fish Alone Or With A Buddy?
I do both. I have some restrictions though. I will always go with my old man, no exceptions. If it is somebody else, we have to go out in my boat. I got tired of being drug around to areas that I knew the fish weren't in. So now I make sure that I am in control.

Do You Throw Lures In A Specific Order?
Usually I start with a crank-bait or jerk-bait until I get some kind of strike. From there I start throwing something I can fish slow and something I can fish fast. Once I figure out the speed I throw similar lures until i find the specific one they want and what presentation they want. Then hope I can find a pattern. TC

Decline In Fishing?
I think it is all how you start them. I didn't get into fishing until I was 16. My dad was a big tournament angler but when he took me out as a kid we would go bluegill fishing. I remember being so bored. I was 5, with a lot of energy. Watching a bobber for 4 hours was not my idea of fun. I wanted to run, jump, scream. I just needed to move. I kept all of this in mind when I took my girlfriend out for her first time fishing, 2 1/2 years into our relationship. We went swimming and stuff when we first got there because she enjoys tanning and all that girly stuff. When we finally went fishing I set her up with a spinning rod and a wacky-rigged senko. She out fished me. The week after that we went again. This time I set her up with a spinning combo and a t-rigged brush hog. I explained to her that she was going to have to work a little bit harder for the fish this time and it was going to take more patience. She did just that, she didn't out fish me but she sure kept up with me. Three weeks later she had her all-year fishing license and completed her hunter ed course. Again, don't underestimate the importance of how you introduce the sport. TC

If You Could Tell A Company To Make Your Custom Bait..
A formula that would turn my tears after a day of no fish into a plastic scent that would bring the bass into the boat for me.

New Texas Rig Setup
I will be going to BPS on wednesday to get a new reel for my Texas Rig rod and a new rod to go with my silver max reel for jerk baits. I have been doing some online shopping so that I kind of know what I am looking for when I get there. For the jerk bait rod I am thinking of a Quantum Smoke, 6'6 or 6'9 medium power. For the reel I am not sure what to look for. I was thinking a 7.1:1 ratio but most of those are looking out of my price range ($300 for both rod and reel) besides the Pflueger Supreme and the BPS reel. So I suppose my question is; I'm looking for a reel that has a decent line pick up for texas rigs within the 100-130 price range. Any suggestions? EDIT: The title is wrong. Should read "New TEXAS RIG setup"

Magnetic Brakes Not Working Properly
Took the side plates off. The magnets move and the race is still intact. When I touch the spool to the magnets when they are all the way up I don't feel an attraction between the magnets and the spool. If the spool were aluminum, which I'm not sure it is or isn't, what would the magnets be attracting to? Also, this has only been a problem recently, I'll say at the beginning of June I noticed it was a bit off but thought my thumb was just being too confident. But now I am really starting to notice the magnets are causing an issue.

I Need Chatterbait Help!
1. Let the fish tell you what they want. I like to bump it on cover or reel it in slowly while jerking it around. It's not always what they want though. 2. My favorite trailer is a Zoom Swimmin Super Fluke. The tail on that fluke gives it a nice extra subtle action. 3. Nope. TC

Should One Automatically Change Out The Stock Treble Hooks On All Of Your Lures?

Cecil The Lion
It doesn't sound like it was ethical but really, who the h*** cares? I can tell you surely people in Zimbabwe don't care. They have one of the most corrupt governments on the planet, most people don't know what clean water is, most of you third-world problems. A dead lion is the least of their problems. Here's the synopsis; the lion is cute, it looks cuddly, therefore we shouldn't kill it. Why don't people fuss over the hundreds of thousands of fish that are filleted every year? Because they're not cute. The conspiracy theorist in me has another thought as to why this is such a big deal, but that's a conversation to have over a beer.

Pitching- What Is A Good Distance?
To me, pitching in the yard and pitching in the water are two completely different animals. Pitching softly into a container and pitching into water without a splash or sound are very different. I am blessed to have a pond at my house. When I was teaching myself I would take one of our marker buoys and throw it 10 feet out and pitch to it to where if someone had their eyes closed they couldn't tell I was dropping a jig in the water, and as I got better i kept moving it out a foot until now where I am about 17 feet. For me, there is no need for a pitch farther than 20 feet. at that point I will just skip it to the destination. I will add one more thing. Pitching is about accuracy AND silence. If you can pitch accurately for 40 feet but make a big splash and crash when it hits the water, then the pitch is pointless.

Magnetic Brakes Not Working Properly
Thanks! That would make sense then because it doesn't matter how much I turn up or down the magnets there doesn't seem to be a difference. Thank you papajoe22!

Lure Diversity!
JERKBAITS! You can get them in both deep and shallow versions, and in clear water you almost can't beat them!

Writing Articles?
I've been interested in writing articles for a while now. Something I have always loved to do is teach. I coached boxing for 2 years after I was done fighting myself and I have been coaching track and field (discus) for 3 years now. But now that my time in sports is almost done (1 more track season) I am looking for something else I can contribute to, and I have always been fairly decent at writing and great at giving speeches, so writing articles interests me. Only thing is, I'm not sure how/where to start!

Magnetic Brakes Not Working Properly
The magnetic brakes on my Abu Garcia Silver Max are not working properly. No matter where I have them set the spool still spins out of control when the bait reaches the water. I have had this real for about 4-6 years, can't exactly remember. Are there any suggestions for remedying this?

Small Streak
PMA! Me and my old man fish a lot of tournaments together. If a day is tough we are constantly boosting each other up by saying "PMA" which stands for 'Positive Mental Attitude'. I believe, and it usually proves true, a positive mental attitude is the best and most important tool to have on the boat.

What's Your Problem?
Lately, it's been fishing with somebody new. My buddy and I have always fished, not always together but we would always exchange stories. He just got a new bass boat and he is all about going out all the time, which I have to say isn't a bad thing. What I struggle with is the frustration that he has always been a bank fisherman so he still is only fishing in 3-5 feet of water even if he is in the boat. It's July, the water temps are 85+ degrees, THEY AINT HERE Also, he tends to see a spot and say "that looks like a good spot for bass" instead of listening to me talk about "patterns", "seasons", "baitfish". Not trying to be a know it all. It's just when you go out 2 weeks in a row, nobody is listening and you're not catching anything. It gets old quick!
