Investing in Fishing
Hello! I am 15 years old and recently got into bass fishing. I have a good spinning combo, a good reaction bite combo (spinners, cranks, jigs, etc) and a stout MH 7'3" rod for heavy stuff, but no too heavy. If I'm fishing deep, i can switch the casting reels with each other and do fine. if I'm just messing around with lite t rigs an finesse worms, i have a 5'6" zebec that has claimed 15 bass this year. i would consider myself to have a decent array of baits. I like to texas rig and have lots of worms for that. cranks and jigs are good. i don't have lots of tw and spinnerbaits. want to get more also want to add a m power plastics rod eventually. other than occasional income, I'm not making money. I'm pretty good at getting stuff cheap (recently got a quantum smoke for 100) i am posting to see if anyone has suggestions on how to spend my money i invest into fishing. i am a recreational angler Here are a few questions I have 1. Do i need to change out hooks, have only bent trebles twice 2. if yes will cheap vmc hooks work 3. premium vs. "generic" i use non GYB seiko type baits. during the occasional tourney i will use them, is it worth it for me 4. gamakatsu vs vmc/bass pro i typically use vmc as the hooks are good and cheap, i use other brands, when i need to, like owner mosquito 5. what is a good way to break up spending like 15% plastics 15% terminal tackle 20% hard baits 50% rods reel line? thanks! and tungsten vs steel vs lead

Medium vs. Medium Heavy
You_Only_Live_Once_Fishing replied to You_Only_Live_Once_Fishing's topic in Fishing Rods, Reels, Line, and KnotsThanks for all the replies. I have the 7'0" M & 7'1" MH Tournament ZX rods. The former broke when I made a cast with a small crank bait 4in from the tip. The latter broke in the middle when I made a cast after catching a fish. I do not boat flip fish or fish in lots of cover with these rods. I am a recreational angler, so I want to enjoy the fight of the fish. In order to do this, I keep the drag low. I set my drag by taking 6 feet or so of line and handing the end to my dad. He holds the line tight and i set the drag all the way up. i give a slight bend in the rod and slowly decrease the drag pressure until line comes out.

Learning Lessons The Hard Way
so, i had broken all of my bait casting rods, and recalled an old spinster somewhere in the shed. One hour later I had the spinster spooled with 6 pound fluorocarbon for my little cousin to fish with me. i noticed the rod was similar to a bait cast reel. i decided it would me an ultra lite finesse bait aster until i got new rods. so i rigged up at split shot rig and went to the pool. the rig i had came up with seemed like it would be good for pitching to little bass near cover in a pond. so i head to the pond and catch three bass in twenty minutes. pattern set! It was nearing sundown and i wanted to crank some bass. i tied on my 17$ live target square bill which has three bass on it this year. i was so excited i just used the improved clinch knot on 10 pound cxx. I caught two 1.5 pounders. i decided to sprint as fast as i could 300 yards to another pond with out my gear. I made a cast and BAM! the lure snaps off mid cast. Darn, i forgot to retie. the lure landed near some reeds across the small pond. i decide to save 17 dollars and walk three yards out to get my lure. first step out, 8 in muck, ok, not too bad, next step, 4.5 feet of muck. UH OH! I'm only 5'7" and 15 years old. i am too young to die. and how stupid would that sound. "Breaking News: 15 Year old kid gets swallowed in muck pond trying to retrieve $17 fishing lure" lol. i learned my lesson to tie good knot.

Medium vs. Medium Heavy
I just broke my 7'1" MH rod. this is the second Tournament zx rod I've broken this month. they look and feel good, but the blanks keep breaking. I want to exchange it for another rod. I used it for senkos, 3/8 oz jigs, 1/2 oz cranks spinnerbaits, etc. i think mh is better but I'm not sure. i don't want to snap rods, but i want to have fun, also is a mf action good too? thanks
