  1. Yeah I took it slow. But it didn't cut the line until it was in the boat ??? I marked the point if I ever go back again.
  2. Yep...I just looked it up. To be honest I didn't know what I had until it was in the boat. But the state says 14" is the legal minimum so a 19" isn't bad. First time I've seen one of the pike family. Cool. So the title is "1st Chain Pickerel" It really hated getting near the boat ??.
  3. Really thanks. Then it's my first ?
  4. Hey I have a little Garmin GPS that got it display cracked and now seems about a 1/4 mile off. I learned a long time ago Google maps won't work without a cell signal. About 50% of the places I go only has rural service at best so I have to rely on it (it saved my butt on Guntersville a few years back). Since it's impossible to see one before you buy now any recommendations? Only criteria is that it's Water Proof. I have a TomTom car GPS that's a pure P.O. junk from 2011.
  5. Just an oops caught fish. Deep Creek gave me a 19" baby pike on 6lb line Tuesday. Oh Tuesday was PERFECT fishing weather, overcast and rainy. One bummer my best lure is now long long gone, I'll have to wait until next spring to replace it if I can.
  6. Caught this by accident at Deep Creek. A 19" Garrett County Gold fish ? Little baby pike but man was that fun.
  7. I caught it using my "fish finder rig". I put a trout hook with a worm weight and bobber and troll about 40 feet back. I had just switched over to it as I haven't got my one handed baitcaster casts any good at all. Put the large inline spinner (watermelon and red with a silver spinner) on. Man that pike went ballistic as soon as you got it near the boat. Like trying to hold on to a ticked off Rottweiler. Of course I had no net. I'm amazed something so light had that much power. It was pulling that 17' around like a toy. 80 lb thrust motor on 70% to tow it out into more open water. Made my whole trip...so far the year.
  8. I went to a cold water lake Monday and Tuesday. I knew there were pike in there and I'd heard they'll attack anything when hungry. I bought some hemostats just in case. Yep...a baby pike 19"long hit my spinning rig with 6lb monofilament. At first I thought I snaged a log with the large inline spinner. Then it moved. It had that medium rod bent in half a few times. Took a half hour to get in the boat. At which time she sliced the line. It didn't register any weight on my expensive $5.00 scale. I dropped it into the livewell until I could figure out what to do. That took another 30 min (mountains, very very bad internet). I never found the lure. I guess I'll have to get steel leaders if I go out to that lake again. It was great fighting it. Had to use the trolling motor to keep him/her out of the parked boats and docks. I have a pic but it's to big maybe. I'll try a screen shot.
  9. Deep Creek lake. It's about 3 hrs west. Always had the rep of being cold and the mountain vacation spot for any good Baltimorian and DC politician. If you're from the city It's wide open wilderness. If you're from a farm It's buildings cramed in every nook. Saw millions dollar boats just sitting on the water already wrapped up (why it's wrapped in the water I have no clue, it will be ice by Dec 15th. My legs won't let me drive that long then do anything. Most go out for a day.
  10. Far western MD on a cold platue. The lake is at 2500 ft. 60°water, wicked wind that changes every five min. Everyone knows where the fish are,.... under the three thousand private docks.
  11. Well learned Sunday through Tuesday night hotel people have canned lies for fisherman. So I'm stuck and in a class 0.1 hotel with mean, really obnoxious people. A lake at 65°. Every inch of the shore line has a rental on it. All the major rich folks come here and they act it too. This place is so packed tight two trailers will hit if they try and pass each other.
  12. Just looked all three I have are class 3. I'll have to look over the class 2, particularly because many times I'm the only one out there(reason I have a sealed up phone, marine radio, airborne whistle, and flares)
  13. Thanks to all. You've brought up many good points. For me it would be comfort and at least a class 2. They way I have things stowed it would get punctured. I have a massive stow area in the front that isn't used at all due to you have to crawl into it for stuff. Maybe some cut down milk crates and velcro will help. My neighbors 2 kids crawled in and closed to door to it I was going to stow bumbers in it.
  14. Since I go out by myself and try new places most of the time I have one on all the time. I got flipped off fishing when the trolling motor hit a log and I was in the wrong position. Slowest speed. I was just on the edge backwards to the hit. Oh I can swim, now maybe 10 feet. After my alge ice slip in July it's even on loading the boat.
  15. I was down at the redneck "Toys R Us" (BPS). I got what I needed and a new coat after 30 years. Anyway I was considering buying a auto inflate class 3 life vest as I go out alone almost always(and I've been flipped out once). They aren't cheap. They had, if I recall right, a bounacy pressure or weight that ranged from 25lbs to 80 lbs. I weigh around 170. Do these things really flip you over and keep you up. Also how to you choose the right one. I don't want to spend $180.00 on something I'm putting my life into only to find it can only hold up a 80 lb person. At that point it's to late.
  16. Trash it and get a 30 year old minn kota....it's still better. My MG was a pos. Shook apart, couldn't steer, didn't have enough umph to get out of it's own way.
  17. Just watched a few... man I was doing everything wrong. I mean everything. I'll have to learn to use my left hand to pivot for the flip and keep the right hand steady and brake with my thumb. I was casting one handed, no line out, using a backhand swing...... Well I'm a newbie ?
  18. Thanks, so thats what is meant by a roll cast. I don't have issues with birdnests the reel I have tuned in works great, although I'm still tweaking the brake. I'm in the late 50s and my shoulder is toast, got a shot today so it should be ready in a few days. I'm used to casting with a fast flip of the wrist with my elbow at my side. Oh the balance of the set up seems real good. Underhanded? Like rotating the rod so the eyelets are pointed down?
  19. I just got my first baitcaster. I love it but I can only do overhand casts right now. I used a spinning reel before and it was all in the wrist. I've heard suggestions but don't understand them. Can you just use your arm below the elbow then a fast flip of the wrist? Or do you need to get your shoulder moving a lot? We're getting Ida for a few more days then I can practice some more. Too much rain, fishing is out for at least two weeks due to flooding and such( they tend to hide super deep in high water around here, plus I don't want to hit a car, log, or house)
  20. I drove I 10 from Mobile to Tallahassee. Every single tree was either broken off 20 feet up on all laid on the ground like a meteor hit. Big I beam signs were twisted into unimaginable pretzels . Semi's wrapped up in signs and trees. People at the rest stops said it was due to a hurricane 2 to 3 years ago. This was spring of 2019.... you all can keep that crappie. First and last time in western FL. I hate this sites drunk leprechaun doing spell check.
  21. There are many YouTube videos on setting up the reel. It seems to get the best out of it with the least birdnests it's seems critical that you "tweak" the setting for each lureafter a few casts. I bought a expensive Dawia Tatula 103 HS L. 7.1 ratio left hand crank(holdover from spinning reels). It's made for braid but I have monofilament on it(I've tried braid and was shut out for a year). A forum member @Junger let me use one once and I was astounded and the ease, accuracy, and control. I'm still learning side casting but I can whip that thing with two hands hard and land the lure with barely a drop in the water on a high arc. the weather here has been very difficult, high humidity, rain from clear skies, squals popping up in 3 min the gone as fast. I hoping to get out more in Oct. Oh I getting a lot of smallmouth off of small and medium inline spiners for crappie, yellow blade kinda bright green body. @Junger showed me the basics and they work good. Lastly, he used super light swim bait top water lures on 30.lb braid and it cast like 2 lb line. He did pretty good, I got a few hits but set the hook to fast. I put in another post on what I've learned and one video from Jimmy houston really helped. Oh yeah so far 3 minor birdnests, having 2 feet out of the tip of the rod and you can feel when to realease So far I love it, if I can get my side casts good for shade tree fishing I'm set. Oh. Cheap 9.99 Wal-Mart rod. 12 lb Berkeley green monofilament. It also casts my shallow dive repalas perfect.
  22. I have one now. I'd never really used one until junger handed me one to use. It took about 10 minutes to learn. I was hitting areas 6 feet in diameter real fast then down to three into the wind. I haven't learned how to side cast yet but I love the control that reel has when you set it up right. The tension should be set so if you release it and you lure/bait hits the ground the reel should stop. The magnetic is generally set at 50% and I adjust mine depending on circumstances. Not getting far enough range reduce it. Getting a but of a bird nest on hard casts increase it. I'm still.learming that one.
  23. You shouldn't have a problem at all. The dı/dț (change of current over change of time) is glacier slow for sonar. =long wavelength=5 mile long antenna to radiate. Even if it does, you move the wire six inches away. Sorry did electronic noise suppression before I retired, it comes out here and there.
  24. Generally two types of shielding together works best. Braid as shown in the picture and a heavy foil under it then the insulation. If there is noise(pass an AM radio over the entire length of the power leads if the noise goes up you may need shielding) you have to rely on the total thickness and area coverage. Good luck.
