Portable Fish/Depth Finders
JT, how long could you go on the 8 D Cells? Have you ever used rechargeables? I think the cup would be fine for the kayak...I'm slow. On the other boat, Im thinking I would use the Hummingbird on the dash to get where I want then attach the cup for the Garmin so I would have a finder on the bow to use with the trolling motor. What do you think?

New spin "Bassmaster, a day on the lake with
I'm guessing that all of have read "a day on the lake with..." in Bassmaster mag. The Pro brings all his gear to a strange lake etc etc. What would you think of this idea. The Pro comes, empty handed to your house or lake to use only your gear, tackle, boat, electronics etc. How would they use our gear? What techniques would be different than ours with the same "stuff"? How would they fare on our lakes? Would it be an eye opener for us? What would we learn? Curious

If you were to buy a new boat - same brand or not?
Mainer, I'm like you I guess. but I just started bassin 1 1/2 yr ago. I fish reservoir lakes in AZ. So, I bought a completely reconstructed Alum.1982 Sea Nymph 16' deep V with a 90hp Evinrude. It has a beam of about 84" (former Great Lakes boat) and it carries my kayak too.

Hypothetical fishing trip Input
Nick The water is greenish but fairly clear to 2 to 3 ft. It is a 36 acre lake with a max depth of 8' with very little cover or structure. The food I have seen near the shoreline is mostly 1 to 3 inch minnows. Have had luck with 3 to 5 inch grubs and dropshotting Robo Worms. Chris gave me enough tips on jerkbaits that I caught a few on one last week. Looking for stratagies. Ric

Favorite fishing Location
Mainer, I also fish from a kayak in a 36 acre lake across the street from home. Quick and easy to fish before or after work. Max depth 8'. Largest catch 4-8 Largemouth. Bartlett Lake AZ is a great place to take the other boat when I have more time. It's 51 miles away

Scent or no scent
I just started using Kickin Bass. No noticable change so far. Seems to wash off quickly. Has anyone ever stored a hard bait in a scented plastic bait bag, after or while using the soft plastics? Any results?

Hypothetical fishing trip Input
OK Guys, In Mesa, AZ for the past week it has been overcast, partly cloudy and sometimes rainy with highs in the upper 50's. This Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun it should be in the high 60's to low 70's. Solunar calander says its a good weekend to fish too. If you were here how would you plan your day on the lake? Water level low, temp unknown, clear to stained. Bright sunny days forcast.

Fish Finder under 150 dollars
Does anyone have experience with the Garmin 120 Portable? I am considering one for my kayak and as a second for my boat.

Are you loyal to a brand?
Glenn, I thought that was wierd too. But he is catching bass...right

Are you loyal to a brand?
Opps, hey Warrior, I dropshot using Robo Worms' straight tail and 4" sculpin shad with great success if I am patient enough to dropshot. If I hit a hot spot I cannot keep up. With a bass on the hook another will be following. I also use a RED EWG hook. They are a little soft and easy to tear though. I'm thinking of using the leach on a spinner or buzzbait. ><((((o> ~~~

where do you come from
Originally from Wis. lived in Mich. UP on Superior for awhile as a kid. Moved to Mesa, Arizona 30 yr ago. Just started bass fishing 1 1/2 yr ago...a blast. We have many resevoeur/canyon lakes in the area with small and largemouth, walleye, trout in the mountains. For more info on AZ go to azgfd.com for fishing reports, stocking schedules etc. I think PHISH, From Vegas and I must be the Southwestern members. I fished four days since being on the forum and heve caught fish in two new ways...already cheers Ric

Portable Fish/Depth Finders
PS Anyone have any experience with the portable Hummingbird? Not the pole or wrist mounted.

Portable Fish/Depth Finders
JT, I saw that unit in a Bass Pro Catalog last night. Do you use regular batteries in it or did you buy a special battery I heard is available? Are you confident with the suction cup? Could the transducer be permanently mounted to a piece of plastic and hung overboard on a line, and still be effective?

Fiberglass & Aluminum boat tournaments
In the year I have been fishing Arizona I notice that Bass tournaments are split between those for Fiberglass Boats and those for Aluminum. Why does it make a difference? ???

What new technique are you going to try?
I want to practice my "hard" lures. Poppers, sticks, cranks, jerks. I always seem to do better with my soft plastics. Still trying Ric

Bass Books
Glenn, I do not have a specific book in mind, but I do prefer the articles that teach techniques and methods. 8)

Newbie needs tips
Thanks Sam, Do you fish sickle tail worms? If so, how do you rig and fish them? I have my best luck with a 3" sickle tail Kalin grub fished slow.

Portable Fish/Depth Finders
The 36 acre lake across the street I fish in a 9 1/2' kayak. On other lakes in the area I use my deep V aluminum. The deep V has a finder near driver. I would like a portable to use in the kayak and also in the front of the V. Is anyone using one with any success? There are several models available

Casting small jerk,crank and topwaters
Trivib I also use the spinning for under the docks with good success. I have a Rick Clunn baircasting reel from Bass Pro but I am still learning to use it. I'm going to practice in my back yard soon.

Casting small jerk,crank and topwaters
Chris Thanks for the "mood and pattern" info. I rerigged my 7' rod last night and am going to tie on a small chrome rat l trap or heddon puppy for the top. What would you think of tossing a carolina or splitshot rig with a light hook and worm toward shore and hopping it toward deep water?
-
Newbie needs tips
Guys, If you fish a 7" worm do you rig Texas style, on a jighead, splitshot, carolina rig? Here in Arizona of course we have more bright sunny days than anything. The 3" Kalin Grub or Power Grub I use is a punkin brown with a yellowish tail. Any other color suggestions

swimming a jig
Chris & JT, I'm going to try this because it sounds like it will have a great fall rate. I caught my biggest bass 4 1/2 lbs on a split tail grub on a yellow 1/2 oz jighead in the middle of the lake. Have you ever thrown it towards shore and hopped it deeper? Any luck?

New Forums???
I have been on this site now 2 days and already have new ideas on how to solve fishing/catching problems as a rookie. The site is easy to navigate and so far the responses are good. Thanks

Casting small jerk,crank and topwaters
So maybe the fact that my cast is shorter with the hard lures than it is with a 1/8 jig and 3" grub is some of the problem. If you cast a 2-3" jerkbait, popper or stickbait out there near shore how do you work it back? Do you wait for the ripples to stop as some say? Do you reel, twitch, start stop, jerk or combinations till you see what works. What would you think about going out with only the hard stuff and leaving the soft plastics at home forcing me to try EVERYTHING? ???
