Is there any disadvantage to having a rod that is overpowered or “too stiff” for throwing 1-3 oz swimbaits?
Moderate-fast as stated above, right?

I’m not referring to the lure rating but to the ability of the rod to keep fish pinned and not rip trebles out.

Is moderate too much and mod-fast ideal?

Yeah I just thumbed through my previous threads, I saw your explanation of the action. I think I need the power rating 1-3 oz + mod-fast action, can’t seem to find this in a rod under 7’6” though.

Then what would you want?

At the advice of those here I recently purchased this rod: 7’4” XH Falcon Expert Amistad Casting Rod On paper it looked perfect to me, lure rating of 1-3 oz which most of the swimbaits I throw fall into. However, I’ve heard people advise against getting a swimbait rod that is “too heavy” and that you don’t want a broomstick. What problems could this pose? I upgraded to this from a 7’4” HF Mojo as I wanted a little more backbone for throwing heavy swimbaits like the Bull Shad, Chad and Deps. Most of the baits I will be throwing on this rod fall right in the 1-3 oz rating, are these always accurate and is it important to stay inside of those limits? I believe the mojo only went up to 1.5 oz.

Would most here advise against throwing heavier, treble hooked baits like the whopper plopper on a Dobyn’s Champion XP 734C?
Would you put the super spook in the same category as WP90?

Fuji on Champ, Sierra uses a different guide I believe.

Well I’m trying to keep the number of rods I bring at 4 lol, finesse, versatile spinning, versatile casting, swimbait. Yeah, I gotcha.....although isn’t the quality of the blank/components quite a bit better in the Champion, and wouldn’t the Sierra be somewhat of a lateral move if not possibly a downgrade from the Mojo?

Man I really want that champion ?

I was really excited to get this rod as I have heard rave reviews on its versatility and balance, but I was recently told it was not ideal to throw larger treble hooked baits. I will be using this as my “do everything” casting setup, but will primarily be throwing the Whopper Plopper 90, 1/2 oz spinnerbaits/Chatterbaits, jerkbaits, buzz baits, crank baits and occasionally a medium/large sized walking bait like a spook or a popper (Rio Ricos.) Currently using a 7’ MHMF Mojo Bass for these applications, pleased with it but ready for an upgrade. Is the fast action of the Champion XP not ideal for these (esp plopper) due to ripping treble hooks out or will it work as long as I use mono? If not, what would you recommend that would be an upgrade from the Mojo and a more moderate tip than the Champ? I know they make a crank bait rod (706CB) in this line but I am pretty dead set on split grip and these are only available full cork. Thanks and sorry so many questions, trying to prepare my arsenal for spring! ??

Last question - what line do I want for 1-3 oz swimbaits/glide baits, and do I need a new reel or can my Curado 200XGK handle it just fine?
Makes sense, thanks!

So the narrative that abrasion resistance directly correlates to diameter is incorrect?

Sorry I was just unclear as to what the exact material Armilo was, description on TW seems vague did not know if “nylon” was synonymous with mono, or if it was some other hybrid. Yeah, good point. I really don’t need or want it to sink, the 2 oz bait will stay down just fine by itself. Isn’t Armilo mono and not copoly?

And I suppose the disadvantage would be tensile strength/abrasion resistance? So is that Armilo you recommended mono?

Gotcha, thx. Why exactly do a lot of people recommend fluro, do you really need that sensitivity? Seems mono/nylon would be less likely to break.

Would the loss in IPT through the thicker diameter (P-Line) offset the reel’s natural IPT (8.5:1?) Also what about fluro?

So the 8.5:1 ratio will make it more difficult to work a glide bait properly?

So 19 or less?

Do you have to buy a dedicated swimbait rod even for smaller (1-2.5 oz) baits?
Word So what would you recommend with what I’m throwing, 20 lb Armilo?

Will that work with my Curado K?

Sorry all the questions, trying to do this right as I don’t want to lose any $75 baits! Currently running 15 lb seaguar red but had bad experiences with fluro breaking off. Will this Curado work once adjusted properly or is it going to be difficult casting these heavy baits? Thanks!

What line do you recommend? I’ve heard P-line CXX recommended, I am currently running 15 lb seaguar red, but I really don’t want to cast/break off a $75 bait and have had bad luck with fluro fraying/snapping.

Yes for sure, and thanks! I was worried about those broomstick handles.
