Favorite bass crankbait!
I've found that the Academy brand H20 Express work well enough without spending much, so I don't flinch if I have to cut it off of a snag. The trebles seem to bend a little easier than I would like, however. I regularly use, and have success with, the Ghost Shad lipless and Bluegill squarebill.

Water temp is bathwater, outside temp is armpit. This bass felt like it had a fever. And one while I was avoiding the storm:

Haven't been out much in the past 3 weeks. This bass had to have a fever, he was so warm. Can we get a weather-temp break please? Edit: a quick grab before the storm dropped:

Couple scores at Johnson. Picked up my first ever gar from the boardwalk pond on a Senko: And finally landed a good bass out of Fountains after a prolonged dry spell on a squarebill. 4.4 lbs, I absolutely love it's patterns and color, I was very happy to return this beautiful bass to the pond.

Well, my day started off rather mundane. Feeling somewhat defeated after just landing dinks, basically relegated to just using Senkos, for the quite some time. I ducked into the woods behind a public pond to a more obscure, less fished, but separate pond. Two casts into ~6" water with the green pumpkin and I had a massive hit. I was quite surprised, I thought it was some sort of carp based on the length. But no! My first gar! I didn't even hook him, he clamped on the hook and I just dragged him through the mud to where I could assess where to go from there. I stood there for a few seconds trying to figure out what to do(while also being ecstatic that I landed a gar!). Donned my pliers and pulled the hook from his viscious looking jaws. Hook's free, what now? He was flopping about slinging mud all over me. So I just kept using my feet and edging his backside to get him back to the water. It was an intense few minutes. Apparently my day wasn't over--I FINALLY, after about 2 months of landing dinks(my last 3+ was almost two months to the day), I pulled in this chunky bass. Went 4.4, but she certainly felt bigger. I was making my way back to my car and stopped to cast in this shallow corner of the pond. A lot of activity, small fish, threw my bluegill squarebill and kept pulling up with leaves/sticks/etc. Felt some dead weight, "obviously this is just a big stick". Nope!

I've definitely seen you at Neshoba before. Nice fish. Still dink city for me.

How big is your tackle bag?
I use a Spiderwire sling pack that has enough storage for two hard plastic boxes, my scales, GoPro, a spool of line, pliers, scissors, and however many packs of plastics I can shove in. I fish exclusively from the bank, so I don't care to carry anything more.

in a slump
Also in a bit of a slump. My go-to is lipless and squarebill, and they just aren't interested. We're in the high 80s and low 90s, with off and on rain storms(seems to be raining every other day). Appears that slowing way down with Senkos is about my only option lately, but they aren't bringing in any real numbers or weight. Bank ridden this time of year is really beginning to suck.

The only size of note on this little bass is the scar across his belly. I'm impressed that a wound that big didn't kill the little feller.

Johnson-fountains is rough lately(again). Hooked up on a decent 2lb yesterday only to have him spit the lure right at the bank. Front ponds are pretty much useless to me(again). They finally lifted the grate allowing passage from the front to the middle pond, by the way. I walked back into the woods behind the fountains today and found some breaks in the tree line just wide enough to toss a Senko under tree limbs. This little one hit it a couple times before he finally decided he wanted it. Small, but surpringly fat(relatively speaking). I was a bit shocked at the size of the scar on his belly considering his size, seems a scar that big would be a death wound for a fish that size. Ah well. Back to it tomorrow afternoon. Does anyone know if the pond way back past the front ponds is overgrown? I might wander down there and toss a jig around if there's still a path down to the water.

Mid/late day water here in Southwestern TN is approaching bath water temps, so I'm struggling with my usual preferred crankbaits and forced to move to Senkos. Needless to say, I'm ready for late Summer/early Fall to get these water temps back down. Caught this one Monday(plus a few others)on a watermelon Senko, and is the largest I've caught in about three weeks(previous was 3.02 on a squarebill in light rain). He was fun to bring in though, I was watching a school(3-5' in diameter) of shad/minnow moving around right in this "narrow" cut and I kept tossing the Senko all around and inside the school. Finally got that familiar bump and run and set the hook. Jumped out of the water a couple times for dramatic effect, but I had him hooked squarely in the corner of his mouth, so he had no chance of getting off. 2+, 2.5 if I'm being generous. As I alluded to earlier, I don't often fish with Senkos(or plastics in general) often, but it's been fun to catch them on my med/fast spinning setup with the drag dialed down a bit. If the size isn't there, then I might as well make it a fun fight. Thanks for reading my rambling.

I'm about ready for late Summer, early Fall to kick in and start driving these water temps back down. The bite has been rough for me lately. That's not to say I haven't been catching anything, but the size has dropped considerably. I'm being forced to slow way down off the cranks and switch over to Senkos, which I really don't prefer. I'm seeing them cruising and holding up right on the bank, but their interest level is low--almost lethargic. Caught this one Monday(plus a few others) in Gtown on a watermelon Senko, and is the largest I've caught in about three weeks. 2+ range, 2.5 if I'm being generous. He was fun to bring in though, I was watching a giant school of shad/minnows moving around right in this little "narrow" cut and I kept tossing the Senko all around and inside the school. Jumped out of the water a couple times for dramatic effect, but I had him hooked squarely in the corner of his mouth. I will say, re: Senkos, that it's a whole lot of fun landing them on my med/fast action spinning rod. It's nice to feel that bump and watch the line start to run, then getting a solid hookset. Requires a bit more patience than the trebles on my preferred cranks.

Help me estimate the weight of this fish
Going to agree with those saying in the 3ish range. It's difficult to say based on the pictures provided. Regardless, it's still a nice healthy looking LMB.

Voice activation on the Hero 5 is a great feature. It's kind of wonky at times, but I've used it quite a bit.

Felt him hit the squarebill a couple times and figured I was hitting something underwater. Eventually he caught it on the bottom lip. I think we were both a little surprised to say the least.

This one caught me totally by surprise. Kept feeling him hit it, and thought I was just hitting a branch underwater. Johnson-fountains.

The ponds behind Halley are inaccessible due to the fence, assuming private property. If that's the one I'm thinking about. Can't answer your question about Lowe's in Gtown.

low alcohol beer with flavor
Southern Prohibition(Hattiesburg, MS) Devil's Harvest Breakfast IPA(formerly an APA with a little more alcohol) is my go to session brew lately. 4.9%, hazy, and packed with hops. It recently topped a blind taste list out of 51 other session IPAs. Or Westbrook's gose, if it's available in the area. Puts Otra Vez(and myriad other American gose) to shame. Salty, tart, sour goodness.

FYI, Johnson-fountains is closed until some time Saturday for a kids fishing rodeo. Went to the Grove yesterday instead. Couple bites and a sub-pound LMB.

What made you rage the most?
Happened recently, and it wasn't even my fish. Buddy hooked up with 6.5-7lb LM, and was reeling it into the dock. I dropped my rod when I saw how big it was, and reached into the water to pull it out. One violent shake he snapped the line/knot and fell from my grip and swam away. Still kicking myself for not using two hands to help land that fish for my friend.

To All My Memphis Pond Hoppers!
Quiet around here lately. I've only had two days so far this week to get out. Caught this one yesterday. 2.5ish pounds. Swallowed the crankbait sideways and got lodged in the gills. Finally got the lure out after a hectic few minutes--he was still flopping around, snapped the quick pic and released. Much to my surprise, he had no issue re-entering the water. No circling around or going side up, swam away with vigor. Went back out today in this "great" weather. Couple bites, no fish landed. Didn't see this fish's corpse so I'm assuming he'll be good to go.
