So today I got out on the water for a little bit, but the fish weren't biting anything I had. I decided I would take that time to try to learn how to skip a jig. I got the motion down pretty quickly and without too many backlashes. However, no matter how much I tried, I couldn't get the jig to skip more than once (one time I got two skips). I also wasn't getting much distance on the actual skip, maybe one-two feet on average, the best being about 3-4 feet. I'm a tall guy and was using a 7'2 rod with a tatula ct reel loaded up with invizx fluro 15lb. I was wondering if there were any suggestions on how I could increase the number of skips and distance of the skip itself. What kind of gear is best for skipping? Does rod length matter? Type of line? Type of jig/trailer?
  2. How are the new wiggle warts? I have been thinking about getting some, but don't know how they preform. I like the color options they have and think I could benefit from them, if they are good baits.
  3. For $100 I would have to go with a Daiwa Tatula CT. TW has them for $129 but they can be found for $99.95 in so many trustworthy places. But like others have said a price range would help to know what types and brands to suggest.
  4. I know https://www.favoriteusa.com/ has some reels starting at 19.99 and go up to 149.99. I personally have never used them but they say they are made in the US and the YouTube guys I watch like them from what I have watched. If you were to get them I would love to see a solid review on the reel you picked and how it performed for you, I have been looking at some of their stuff since I heard the brands name from one of the YouTube guys videos, but don't know what to think since I know no where around here (or probably anywhere near me) has them in stock for me to actually hold before I buy. I don't know where most brands are being made to be honest, but I do know that Daiwa, and Shimano are making some of the better reels right now and everyone I have seen on this site love Pflueger. I totally understand wanting to buy "Made in the USA" products, but if you are looking for the best bang for your buck products, I would at least check those brands out.
  5. My deepest diving crankbaits are the StrikeKing 5XDs so 15 is the deepest I will go, and I only have like 2 of those so I dont think it is needed to have a setup dedicated only to them, I do however have a hell of alot of normal to shallow cranks and squarebills. I went and got the CT in the 7 ratio. I also fell into the trap of buying an other rod today. I ordered the Daiwa DX bass rod from TW. So now I can put that broken rod to good use, practice my rod building skills a little bit this winter.
  6. Thanks for the help. I have a good spinning setup but didn't list it because I only have one rod and reel so matching those up was fairly easy lol. But I was thinking if I should try to return the orra and get another ct. I think you just talked me into it.
  7. I have to Tat CT and I haven't had this happen ever before. I would contact Daiwa and see if they could help before I used it too much, since they could say it was your fault.
  8. Right now I have 5 casting combos that I could use some help deciding which rods to use for what purposes and what reels would match that as well. Rods Pheninx xg700 7'0 mod action crankbait rod Abu Vengeance 6'9 Med H 3/8-1 oz Abu Vengeance 6'9 Med H 3/8-1 oz (had to cut off about 3-4 in from the tip of the rod because I broke it but have put a new tip top on it) Abu Vengeance 7'0 Med H 3/8-1 oz Shimano Sellus 7'2 Med H XF Worm and Jig Rod Obviously I will be using the two technique specific rods for what they are rated for, listed them for help paring reels with it. Reels Abu Orra Winch 5.4 Lews Mach 1 7.1 Lews CarbonFire 7.1 Daiwa Tatula CT 8.1 Daiwa Tatula CT 6.3 Any and all help/advice would be appreciated.
  9. What are the features that you find most important on fishfinders? and is there a place that will explain what each feature does a little easier to understand for someone buying their first fishfinder. I dont really know what any of it means. i just know i want a gps feature or a way to set waypoints because i plan to travel a little more this summer and kayak new lakes that i dont know very well, and i would like to be able to set waypoints on my home lake for hot spots ive found
  10. Ive been looking for a good fishfinder for my kayak. I would like to stay under $200 and have a pretty good one. I don't want anything that feels and looks real cheap. I was just looking at a Garmin Striker 4cv, does anyone have any experience with these? Or any other suggestions?
  11. BPS has a backpack that I use and it is perfect. has room for 4 smaller plano boxes, to top pocket I keep all my terminal tackle and some soft plastics or whatever else I need
  12. When im going to be bank fishing and walking a little distance I like to carry 3 rods. one spinning for small baits and two baitcasters, usually my worm and jig rod and a rod for moving baits.
  13. thanks everyone for the ideas. never thought about the traction system and noise reduction. makes sense now.
  14. Caught my first ever topwater fish on a bone colored wopper plopper 90. made me go out and buy a black 130 size that might be a bit of overkill for where I usually fish but who knows. it really got me into the topwater bite before the season ended and lead to me catching my first fish walking a spook. great lures
  15. does anyone have any input on what would be some good upgrades I could make for my kayak this winter. I plan on finding a way to attach a milk crate more securely and add some rod holders to it. I also want to attach some pretty sturdy rope to the front of the boat to help get my fat butt to stand up. I would like to make a homemade anchor trolley system but would like some advice on that. The kayak I have is an ascend fs12t.
  16. I still have one of the megabass S cranks but I think I might make that into a keychain so I don't lose it as quickly lol. But like everyone has said, its a part of fishing. I don't see myself buying anymore MB stuff in the near future unless there is something magical about that crank I have. SK lures work fine for me as of now and I don't feel sick if I get it hung up.
  17. Today was up into the mid 50s so i decided i would go to a local lake and bank fish a little bit. since i had just got a new package in from TW i thought i would fish some of my new baits and see how i like them. well the one i was super excited about was the Megabass Vision 110. ive heard so many great things about it but i wasnt really expecting to catch anything because im not that good with a jerkbait. but that is the main reason i wanted to toss it out so bad is so that i could learn a little bit more about how to fish it. well after working the lure back to me with some slow twitching of the rod and even some very slow just reeling it in near a boat ramp with deep water. well about 10-15 casts into fishing it i got caught on a rock. I tried everything i know to get that thing back, i even walked around it on both sides and tried to get it loose. then i remembered i had just bought some 2 oz weight and i knew i had some paperclips in my truck. i hook up my wight to my line and throw it as hard as i can down the line to knock it loose. all i hear is a big splash a few feet to my right. i look down and see my weight sitting in the water. so i stick my hand in the freezing cold water to get the weight back and try again. this time i throw it down and it slides straight down my line into the water and rocks... and nothing. so i pull a few more times and hear a pop.. my line breaks. $25 is not enough money for me to wade out into freezing water for so i cut my losses and load back up into the truck and have a very mad/sad drive home. if you read all that you are allowed to laugh at my misfortune, but it will be awhile before i do
  18. thanks guys, alot of good advice in here. im pretty confident in my jig and texas rig fishing on a small pond i have on my property but when i go to a bigger pond i dont know as well or a lake near my house either on my kayak, brothers jon boat or just bank fishing i seem to come up empty handed or with a small number of bites. i dont know what im doing wrong or different at these new locations. im fishing laydowns and rocky points where other people are catching them hand over fist from what ive heard.
  19. I usually always have one tied on or sitting right beside me. with that said I have the most confidence in that and weightless senkos. So should I take those off and try other techniques until I have more confidence with them or would you just keep one of those on for the tough day so you don't lose confidence in the jig?
  20. I have two of the exact same squarbills. one is a little beat up and catches them all day.. got it suck in a tree and thought I lost it. so that's when I bought the other. but I went back a few days later with my kayak and spend about 20 minutes getting that thing out of that tree and that's the most ive done. I just ventured out and bought some megabass lures and im gonna be on edge the whole time im using them for awhile atleast and would probably go through some stuff to get them back if I were to lose them
  21. I've decided to try to really improve on several different techniques. Would it be better to do just jig fishing no matter the situation until I am very comfortable or should I try and pick a few techniques and try and decide which would be better for that day and then try to learn new things
  22. I switched my spinning reel over to left just to give it a shot and its not too bad but I don't see myself ever switching my baitcasting reels over to leftie. I am however experimenting with teaching myself to cast and flip leftie which is kinda annoying
  23. I have a LiveTarget crankbait, jerkbait, and walking style. Ive only ever used the crank but it worked well and I caught fish on it. However I was bouncing it off rocks in semi shallow water and a few cast latter I noticed it was running differently, and when I went to see if I needed to bend the line guide I noticed about half the bill was broken. After a few emails with LiveTarget I had a new one on the way. So are they worth it? I don't know. Ive caught fish on them and they stand behind the products well. But like others have said, I could buy two other baits that Ive been successful with for the same money. They have a spot in my box but a very small spot because of the price point.
  24. I just bought an Abu Orra Winch in 5.4:1 but my deepest diving cranks are the 5XDs that go to around 15ft and I mostly use squarebills. Do you all think I bought a reel that is too slow for what I tend to do the most? I read reviews for this reel and everyone said it was the best cranking reel for the money, now I'm thinking I should have just stuck with my good old Daiwa Tatula CT in a 6.3:1
  25. Is there a certain way to tell the hook size if you don't have anything to compare them too? I have a terminal tackle box with a few hooks that I just really don't know what size they are.
