That is what they do now because of the shad. The only way I have been able to catch those is with an Alabama Rig or on the surface when the bass are chasing the shad.

There are shad in the lake and they have changed the bass behavior since introduced.

You can get that technology for under $500. I have four Humminbird Side Imaging units. Two 1198c SI Combos One ONIX 10 NT SI One Helix 12 CHIRP SI The first screen shot was from the ONIX and the other two are from a 1198. The ones that are frustrated do not put learning how to use them ahead of fishing. To be successful you learn how to use them first and then apply it to fishing. There are lots of videos on line that show how to interpret the images and operate the units. You just have to make the effort to do the learning process. I have been retired since 2005. Garmin, Lowrance, and Raymarine have units that do the side looking imaging also, they copied Humminbird which had it on the market in 2004. This is at Hunting Run which shows the main creek channel and vehicle tracks made during lake construction. The image was from my first Humminbird Side Imaging unit that I sold earlier this year--798ci SI Combo.

Good idea. Some units have a Switchfire Max default and some have a Switchfire Clear default setting.

Sonar pulses are not X-Rays so they don't "see" through weeds. Of course you will have a cluttered up display from the weed return echoes. Sonar pulses are like light and can be blocked by stuff. If you would ever see fish arches in weeds, that would be a miracle.

Lowrance and Garmin don't speak the same language.

Use Switchfire Clear unless you cannot see your vertical presentation in 20'+ depths. Then you can use Switchfire Max and adjust the Sensitivity setting to see the presentation with minimum clutter. Even if you select 83 kHz to be displayed, the unit is still broadcasting 200 kHz for the depth readout. Default factory setting is 200 kHz. Sensitivity setting is pretty good at the factory default. I don't adjust from that using Clear. I use FishID to determine if any fish present are ones I want to try to catch. With a Humminbird unit, it is a fishing tool. I don't need to adjust its Sensitivity setting.

I did the contour map of Hunting Run. It is Navionics Sonar Charts and is available with the Navionics Mobile App for IOS and Android devices. It is also available with the Sonar Charts map layer for Navionics Hotmaps Platinum East region and Navionics + map cards. The current map has been updated from the printed copy at the check-in shed. It is very easy to catch lots of bass in the summer, just concentrate on the outside edges of the submerged vegetation in the 10'-12' depth range. My best day number-wise is 184 bass. Best five bass day is about 31# There are two standing trees and the rest of the "standing timber" is just the small bush-like trees that grew up when the water was about 15' lower than it is now. Lots of brush/log piles around the lake and several "fish attractors" that are too deep for a summer pattern. If you put two 6V golf cart batteries beside a single 12V deep cycle battery, you will see the total physical size would have more AH. Anything less is just that------less. Do you use two small batteries for a diesel????

Batteries in series multiply voltage. A golf cart battery has a lot of AH.

It will give you depth and hull temperature if that is what you want.

No, The ONIX and ION are the only Humminbird units that can share map data.

Yes, the MARK button. You will get the screenshot in a Snapshot folder on the memory card, and a waypoint with a "S" prefix. The snapshot will be a .png picture file that you can view on your computer with any picture viewer. As long as you keep the card in the unit, you can view them in the Snapshot view and will get a thumbnail picture on the Chart view when at the waypoint.

A 1A power supply will handle any of the four versions of the 858 when using Simulator. Your unit should have a 3A fuse on the positive conductor regardless of the power supply.

1A will run up to 1198, but not a 1199 or large Helix. That is why I stated 2A +

The adjustments that Navionics Mobile has is close to what Lakemaster has.

I use A/C-DC converters so I do not have to use a battery, but any 12V power supply will work if it has the amp capacity. The last one I bought was from Radio Shack and has terminal posts to connect the power cord.

Get a power cord so you can run the unit in your house using Simulator. PC-10 or PC-11. Sometimes I have 4 or more units on my desk checking stuff. I do all the software updates in-house and have them handy to verify an answer I may post on sites like this. Just need a power supply that has 2A+ capacity.

You need a blank memory card in the unit and Snapshot turned on in the accessory menu. SI Range lines is in the Sonar menu.

An LSS-1 or LSS-2 setup is the data box and Structure Scan transducer. If you are just getting the box, you will have to purchase the LSS Structure Scan transducer that will give you Side Scan and Down Scan. Structure Scan does not have 2D sonar, only the latest Total Scan transducer does all three.
