  1. Ned rig is mostly a feel nothing technique, so pretty much any semi decent rod would work, especially with braid to leader. The limited stretch will help with light Texas Riggs as well. Ml-M powered spinning rod should be about right. I believe Ned himself uses $20 walmart rods and reels older than I am. The simplicity, frugality, and finnese style is the real idea of the midwest finesse system from my understanding. There are some very good articles that goes more into the history and origins of "the ned rig". Basically what worked then still works now, just reborn and marketed. I love the technique of ned rigging and can't wait to try the new crawz from zman. Simple, small, and highly productive.
  2. I find rods to be such a personal thing. So many variables that are unique to each rod. From length, design, guides, materials, brand preferences, etc. Added to trends in the fishing industry and advances in technology and a whole lot of marketing :). I use what feels best to me. For length 6'6-6'10" is my comfort zone. Short by today's standards.
  3. X2. Although Winn is so comfortable, time will tell if it takes the number 1 spot.
  4. Daiwa fuego ct or Shimano slx
  5. The more I think about it, this is probably wise advise. The kayak has no rod holders at the moment so I will have to find a temporary solution until I have some idea of what I am doing.
  6. I would like to avoid this but now that you mention it, can you seal the drill holes with something like silicone if you had to? That's an interesting idea about the tracks, I will look into that. Have to mease the back area but don't think a milk crate system will fit.
  7. So I was at Costco and they had a great deal on a pelican mission 100 kayak, so now I own my fist kayak. Been debating getting one for awhile now so excited to open more opportunities for fishing. This kayak does not have rod holders. So I would like to install two rod holders as well as two paddle holders, one for the paddle and another for a net. As you can imagine I am very hesitant about drilling into the kayak. I am not super handy but I can work with basic tools. What should I know before trying this? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
  8. This. Lead by example, others will follow or at least maybe think twice.
  9. Some say yes. Some say no. Personally caught them both straight braid and with a leader. Personally I still have more confidence with a leader, it might be in my head though.
  10. I have an last generation Fenwick Hmg 6'9 ml-f spinning rod and have owned a 7ft m-f hmg. They fish one power heavier than their rating. So medium is medium heavy. Pretty sensitive and strong. Well balanced as well. I also just bought a new carbonlite 2.0 6'8 m-xf spinning rod. I really like the feel of the Carbonlite 2.0 rods. So much so that I also bought their 6'9" Mh-xf casting rod. Would recommend checking them out too. The SLX is nice but seems a slower taper than I like. Hear the Dobyns rods are good as are St Croix Bass x or Mojo line. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above choices. It come down to personal feel for the rod.
  11. I have the original Tatula and the Fuego. Both great reels but to be honest the T wing system doesn't do much for me. If anything the leader knot gets hung up if using a long leader. The Tatula is built like a tank though, the Fuego is solid too but the Tatula is a solid reel. Overall I would go the Fuego route.
  12. Ned, neko, drop shot, in line spinners, light crankbaits, etc. Use braid and it will make the rod a bit more useful. No stretch line and a leader with a moderate fast rod should work for all of the above techniques. The fenwick hmg fishes about a power heavier than listed. So in reality you have a medium light in some other manufacturers lines. Depends where you are too, are you pulling 10lb bass out of the moderate cover or more 1-4lb bass out of light cover. Would also work well for trout, bluegill, sunfish, etc. I think it was very nice of your wife to do that for you. It's tricky for a spouse to buy fishing stuff unless you give a specific list. My wife buys me lures because she likes the names of them
  13. As a bank angler I try to keep it simple, light, and versatile. I use a single Plano 3601 thin box with the following plastics... Trick worms - straight tailed long thin worm, subtle action Senkos - shorter fatter worm, subtle action Curly tail grub - shorter fatter, good amount of action from the tail Beaver style bait - creature bait with subtle action or faster if retrieved at a moderate speed Creature bait - Christy critter or brush hog in both large and small size lots of action from the tail and arms. Craw - realistic and slow action.
  14. Sometimes I feel like my wife and all her purses, given how many bags / boxes I have tried :). Tried the traditional tackle box, hated it. Tried a sling bag off ebay, not bad but small. Went to a bass pro backpack, that's not bad but has a lot of stuff I don't use. Recently went to a Plano weekender 3600 bag and it's decent for what I need. The bigger sling bag sounds interesting, may have to check it out.
  15. I prefer one piece, but have two piece rods for family trips when the car is packed and a bit tight. It's not sensitivity of the one piece, it's strength and action, something that is lost to some extent with two piece rods. I also prefer to keep them rigged up and always use rod gloves to protect the blank and guides, also helps keep the lines tangle free. I hate fussing with two piece rods, harder to keep them rigged up without getting line tangled and over the day the tip can get loose or need adjustment. Time and place for both I guess, but given the choice I will always prefer one piece. Sometimes you don't have a choice though, that's why I keep two. Piece rods in my collection.
  16. Thank you to everyone who responded. I have a fuego as well and no issues at all, so I may sell the tatula and just pick up another fuego or a Shimano slx.
  17. I was wondering if it's possible to replace the twing line guide on my tatula with a standard opening line guide? I use braid to leader and the knot and the twing don't play nice.
  18. It's always interesting how the same rod can feel so much different to different people. Goes to show that there's no hard and fast rules to fishing or equipment. Some rods feel great to one person, while the next person finds it to be lacking. Good thing we have lots of choices As for the ned rig, I think it's great to explore new ideas with it. This year I am trying the TRD and crawz on a size 2 gamakatsu ewg and a 1/16oz work weight. Came across this on this site awhile back and looked perfect for not getting hung up so much.
  19. Was the power of the two rods the same? Same line? I ask because I have a previous generation hmg 6'9 ml-f and it's plenty sensitive with 10lb braid and a 6-8lb leader. I had a medium power hmg at one point but they fish a bit heavy I find. I believe dobyns is a bit lighter powered rod.
  20. Caught my first bass on a jig head with a curly tail worm. Took me four months to catch my first fish... Looking back it's amazing how little I understood about bass and how to present a bait. Thanks to the people on this site and probably thousands of hours of YouTube videos, my fishing has become far more productive
  21. Hello from Kitchener, Ontario
  22. There are some great videos on YouTube that walk through the step by step process and recommend various products.
  23. Kastking has pretty decent braid, not sure about their mono and fluorocarbon lines but good price points.
  24. Does anyone know how durable the Winn grips are? Not the tape but actual grip. Curious to see if they last, hope so.
  25. I just picked up two rods with Winn grips and have yet to fish them but they feel great. Like cork but the Winn grips are very very comfortable.
