Catching/Trapping Green Sunfish
get some super small hooks, like #24 and dice a hot dog into tiny tiny pieces and use that. Im assuming you want a small one to watch grow plus it will be easier to feed at first.. If you use a #8 or 10 hook and a half a nightcrawler or a whole redworm you will catch the full-grown ones.

Sandies.....And Whopper Plopper???????
They'll probably even hit the 190 if they are in a feeding frenzy. I've seen guys catch 2 on 1 big pencil lure when the white bass run in the spring. Yes white and yellow bass are very good eating, stripers are too. Never tried a wiper but I'm sure they are too. Crappie, perch, white bass, and bluegill through the ice is my favorite way to harvest them. Something about the cold water makes the texture better, especially with crappie and perch imo

that's crazy, they do hit little walleye jigs hard as hell. And I sometimes get em on tubes. When I was a teen I murdered every drum I caught to get the stones

Who targets wiper (hybrids) in Kansas?
oh wow, that thing is a tank! Maybe the wipers here PA Fish and game stock are different genetics, I've seen many double digit 10+pounders and none look like that. You get som fat ones but not like that. That fish looks like the greediest fish in the lake

Who targets wiper (hybrids) in Kansas?
The guy I saw on youtube is Kansas Angling Experience. On one of his vids he catches one that has to be near 15, fattest wiper I've ever seen.

Other Species Latest Catch Pics Thread
Got a nice 36" muskie tonight while casting a bone whopper plopper 110 hoping to catch a nice wiper or smallmouth after a little rain rolled through. I ended up having to get in water, grab the fish, and slide the fish up the bank to keep my lure and the fish, She broke me off right as I was landing her. Not real proud of how I handled her, but better than swimming off with a whopper plopper treble sealing her mouth shut. She swam away strong, I got in river with her for the release, tried to take debris off her without her losing too much of her slime. Definitely wish my line didn't break, I would of done my best to keep her from touching dry ground.

Who targets wiper (hybrids) in Kansas?
I want to take a trip there, seems like Kansas grow em just a little bigger. Biggest wipers I have ever seen were Kansas caught on youtube. Olathe? Lake Arthur here in PA has a ton of big ones, they eat alewife all day, maybe it's a genetics thing but they seem to top out at 12 pounds, never seen one get much heavier than that. It's super easy to catch a 5-8 pounder. I really enjoy fishing them in rivers, they seem to be just a bit stronger than lake fatties

Wiper tips
Easiest way on a local lake I fish is wait for dark and the feeding frenzy usually starts around 11pm(they make a lot of noise), once the show starts we throw topwater stuff mostly. Jitterbugs, torpedos, spooks, anything with a hook, etc. Bucktails, jig+fluke, and the same topwater lures is what I use the most on the rivers. I've caught a lot on whopper plopper 110 and 130s the last 2 years(the 110 only this year) but I only throw them in daylight usually, they cost too much to be chucking in the dark towards land. A good way to learn what kind of lures work is watch the striper guys on youtube and just adjust to freshwater conditions. (for ex, you will only need 1/2 or 3/4 oz bucktails usually not 1-2oz). I like John Skinner. You can also just use the same stuff you use to catch white bass, just bigger. In spring and fall when temps are below 60, spoons, bladebaits, and heddon sonars/silver buddy work great. No idea why but they dont work in summer as well. They are voracious eaters, find a big school of shad or alewife, you probably found the wipers. Here they are stocked in lakes to deal with over-growing shad populations. Good Luck, my favorite fish to go after, nothing like fighting a 25-28 inch wiper in current, I've had a couple ultralight reels completely ruined by accidentally hooking a wiper while fishing for crappie.

Some micro-fish minnows are definitely missing, I fished tiny creeks that were basically puddles with #24-#26 hooks as a kid. I've hooked a paddlefish in mouth in Missouri but I know I snagged it. Im sure It wasnt interested in a bare treble hook, they are filter-feeders. Got a lot of my trout, salmon, and odd lake fish in Manitoba and New York. Caught mudpuppies in Ohio River but dont think that is a fish, few types of turtles. Snagged only(7)-gizzard shad, round goby, emerald shiner, threadfin shad, paddlefish, lamprey, alligator gar

Braid for Panfish?
I've seen guys using 20lb braid while trolling spoons and crankbaits for slab crappie, but they used some sort of mono/fluoro for leaders
- That was easy!

How often do you target another species?
I love ice fishing, last year we didn't really have an ice fishing season because it never got cold enough. Hope it's different this year, got a bunch of new gear I never got to use.

How often do you target another species?
all the time, especially if you consider stripers and wipers other species(they are). I'm pretty much usually targeting hybrid stripers and smallmouth are a by-catch. Sure that's a bass lure but I knew the pike were there, super shallow water where pike and musky were attacking baitfish. That was the biggest topwater plug I had with me.

Football Jigs
you ever try adding flash to those? Just something I was thinking about the other day when looking in my box trying to decide between a hair jig or swimjig. Dont think I've ever seen a rubber skirt with flash tied in.

Help! I'm wondering about what happens when you take a big bass away from his bedded area
Im gonna start calling my backlashes "professonal overruns" haha. "Hey looch, whatcha doing over there? Got another backlash dont ya?" Looch: no sir, this here is what they call a professional overrun.

Help! I'm wondering about what happens when you take a big bass away from his bedded area
It's August, in general, bass arent married to a certain spot like in the spring and even then it's really only the males hell bent on guarding the spot. They gotta eat. Fish chase food. Bed means the spawning nests the male builds, brings his lady in, she lays her eggs, she leaves, and he guards the nest. Dragging a bait through a bed in August definitely isnt gonna be the same success rate as in the spring, you dont got an angry male in there fighting off panfish all day that are wanting to eat his kids ready to strike at anything that comes through there. If that dont help, sorry. Maybe ask someone that understands your "slang"

Help! I'm wondering about what happens when you take a big bass away from his bedded area
I was thinking he caught it back when it was on a bed during the spawn and has only caught little guys since then and was wondering where the big ones went. I think we can all agree that male bass dont guard the beds 365 days a year
-
Help! I'm wondering about what happens when you take a big bass away from his bedded area
Spawn has been over for 2 months, at least 6 weeks in the cooler northern areas. They arent on the beds. I doubt both of those fish died, but keeping 2 average sized fish on a stringer just to get a weight seems pointless.

River fishing after a flood
your flood affected the Ohio River which also affected the tail end of the Beaver River below the last dam, the water got so high in the Ohio it backwashed the "wrong way" into the Beaver up to the last dam, yesterday it got back close to normal and let me tell you I enjoyed some of the best fishing since Spring, cant help but think that water pushed some Ohio River fish into the Beaver and up to the dam for easy food. Not really for smallmouth but the hybrid striper(aka wiper) bite was on fire, I caught 11 wipers yesterday in 2 hours, nothing huge for me but I did see a guy get a 10lb+ wiper. Over 30 fish of all sorts of species(sauger, walleye, drum, crappie, and a lone smallmouth) in 2 hours. It took me a couple hours to figure out why the boat ramp was flooded 2 days ago, I check the water level online and it said the gauge read at 5.89 ft(waterdata website), which is basically right at normal, the gauge is above 2nd dam in Beaver Falls where the Ohio River cant affect it. So then I got down below the last dam in New Brighton , the water was super high but rocks below the dam were showing which is not normal if the high water comes from over the dam like usual. So I was like what the heck is going on, until I heard about the Mon being flooded and figured it out. On Sunday, I fished the upper Beaver River and Shenango River because of how high the Ohio and tail end of the Beaver was. The storm didn't really hit us that hard like it did south of PGH. I saw the California Boat Club came loose and was floating down river. Always kind of wondered why schools like Southmoreland's new football field are located so close to creeks/rivers that flood every year. I have fished the Mon a lot in the past and at normal height, I know some pools can be almost like a lake. I use to troll one section for muskies all the time. Just be aware there are going to be new snags and be careful in your boat. Fishing should be fine after it gets close to normal. It's a river, fish are always coming and going. Rivers are always changing, big rain events will ruin and create new hotspots all the time. Always had good luck in dirty water with dark colors, black/blue jigs, black, the color "bama bug" is my favorite after a storm and water looks like chocolate milk.

ID Needed
need a better photo, my guess is redbreast. I'm positive it's not a longear, no white trace around the black spot on operculum flap, Maine is also about 800 miles from it's native range, unless you are fishing in some guy's private stocked pond, very minute chance it's a longear. More likely to find an orangespotted sunfish in Maine but again, no white trace on spot. The thing that is tricking me about your fish is the marks on cheek like a greenie, pumpkinseed, or longear. May be a hybrid like was mentioned imo, Pumpkinseeds are the prettiest sunfish in the north, longears are the pretty fish of the South, Im also partial to fliers with their little teardrop

Yes, There are Bull Sharks in rivers
Im aware of that

Yes, There are Bull Sharks in rivers
I found a dead goat and more than a few dead deer in the Ohio River, doesnt mean they live in it. Someone brought that dead bull shark back from vacation and dropped it onto the boat ramp as a prank, same with the one found in the Tennessee . No access to the ocean = no sharks, sharks are bad dudes but they aren't jumping 60-75ft high locks and dams that is if you mean this one: http://www.fox19.com/story/12476977/shark-found-washed-up-on-ohio-river-boat-ramp if you mean the fake clickbait ones you see on Facebook, those are usually Australian bull shark miscaptioned(on purpose)

Circle Hook Size for Bluegill
gulp maggots, will stay on that little hook better than real ones and work just as good. I use #12 hooks(not circle) when I want to catch smaller bluegill(4-6 inch size) and suckers for flathead catfish
