  1. Told my wife I was just going in to get 1 Mepps comet minnow to fish for trout and I ended up buying a few Rapala lipless crankbaits, Some terminator football jigs, crawfish trailers, and a big musky spinner. Then I broke the tip off my St Croix Bass X medium power spinning rod so I sent it off to St Croix and have a medium/heavy casting rod coming back. So of course I had to order a Daiwa Tatula CT to go with it right away. If I don’t post for a while after my wife sees it all you know what happened ?
  2. Where I live 95% of the places to fish are pure mud bottom. That’s why I never bothered trying to fish a jig until a week ago then I broke 2 off. I just stay away from jigs in the mud. Just starting to try them on the little bit of rock available
  3. Some crankbaits and more poppers
  4. If it’s warming up you want to look for secondary spots. Anywhere they might hold up between deep water and spawning areas. And structure, humps in the water will hold fish. If they aren’t there then they are still deep. If you get a good rain go straight to spawning areas
  5. There was a pond I went to when I was a kid and I would find anything that would float laying around like a stick, flower, weed and throw it in the water and the second anything touched the water a bass would hit it. If they’re hungry they literally will go after anything that fits in their mouth
  6. I would tell you the percentage of times I catch 0 fish but honestly it would be embarrassing. It can be discouraging but when there’s ice on the water bass might not have hardly fed in those 4 days. Just keep at it and keep trying different things.
  7. So I decided I wanted to learn to fish jigs and went out and bought a couple football jigs 1/2 oz. on my first cast I got snagged and lost the lure. I have no clue how. I was fishing on solid rock dragging bottom and it went snug so I tried shaking it loose a little and then walked almost 180 degrees around it to the other side and nothing would get it loose. Tried another jig and a few casts later same thing different spot. My understanding was football jigs were made for fishing on rock and were supposed to be very hard to get snagged. Is there something I may have done wrong or any other ideas?
  8. Love my veritas 2.0 but I don’t have the micro guide model. I wouldn’t worry about the reports if you already bought it. All you can do is try it out for yourself.
  9. It has both largemouth and smallmouth. As well as musky, catfish, and sturgeon. Lot of diversity as it’s one of 3 big lakes that connect a river system to a huge lake. I will check out Navionics

I know a few people that don’t like snaps and say they can tie faster. I might not be the fastest at tieing but with a snap it take a second to pop the lure off and a second to put a lure on. Not sure how it’s possible to tie faster.

I use as small of one as I can usually. No special way to match them as the purpose is to easily switch to different lures. A really big lure will need a bigger one while a small lure will look silly with a big. The ones I use most are 20lb test and work with almost all my cranks, spoons, spinners, and topwaters (usually tie my topwaters though). I have bigger ones for pike/musky setups and some smaller for using small inline spinners. If your fishing heavy weed beds probably want one with more than 20lb test
  13. I haven’t found anything other than a basic topo map of it. It is a natural lake I have some but I haven’t tried them yet. I will try them sometime this year. From what I’ve heard it gets heavily weeded. I planned on trying topwaters. I’ll have to give jigs a try to but never fished a jig yet. Is there anything in particular you look for where different vegetation meet?
  14. So where I live in Wisconsin I have 2 kinds of lakes nearby. The bowl lakes that have a shallow rim and quickly drop to 40-50ft in the middle and only 20-30 acres. And then Lake Michigan. The little lakes I fish are fairly straightforward fishing the weed lines along the outside of the lake with little to no discernible structure in the rest of the lake. I’ve been intrigued for a while by a lake about 40 min away from me that is quite different than anything I have fished. It’s a 8,800 acre lake with a max depth of 10 ft and seems most of the lake is a consistent 6 ft. What would your approach be to finding fish In a lake like that? side note: I fish from a kayak.
  15. I have never fished a jig. Don’t even know how to.

I use snapswivels on half my rods. Used them my whole life. Only issue I ever had is with the snaps that are straight. Always use ones with a bend in the end or they can pull apart
  17. I haven’t seen any clearance here in WI either but I know what you mean. I bought a 100 dollar rod and felt like I mortgaged my house for it lol. I get a little jealous at everyone’s gear
  18. I think it definitely matters if the fish are at all fussy but as far as which color there is no way to know but to try. There’s also a factor in having confidence in what your using. I always had luck with fire tiger designs so I tend to use them more and have more confidence in them
  19. Growing up my dad always bit lead split shots to crimp them to his line. There is almost 0 harm in handling them. It consistent exposure (primarily ingestion and especially for children) that causes problems. Back in the really old days they actually made cups and plates out of lead which caused problems.
  20. You can get a small digital thermometer for an aquarium on eBay for 5 dollars. That’s what I use
  21. If your fishing less than 15ft my favorite is the Rat-L-Trap. if I want a diving lure my favorite is the Rapala x-rap suspending in hot head color
  22. I know the feeling. I have my 2 best rods I bought last fall and only took out once and haven’t caught a fish on them yet. And probably 15 new lures just waiting till may to try them out.
  23. I know what you mean. 1 bass exploding on a topwater makes my day.
  24. Definitely do not recommend backing it down a boat ramp.
