  1. Does anyone else fly fish for bluegill/crappie/small bass? I've been fishing some dry flies intended for trout recently and had a lot of luck using those.
  2. Keep it simple. This technique is how I've caught most of my bass. Texas rig a plastic worm (or crawfish/creature bait if you prefer) with a 1/8 - 1/4 ounce tungsten weight. (tungsten is more expensive, but worth it) Look for vegetation/trees/rocks and aim for those spots. Just hop it along the bottom and wait for the "tick" when they bite.
  3. Trying out a zoom ribbontail worm for the first time today. Any tips on fishing them? I use 3/16 ounce tungsten weights, and 30 pound braid. Edit: Just went out and got a couple bites on it, missed them on the hookset though. Also, I fished a booyah pad crasher frog for a little while, but I just could not get it to walk. Does anybody have any idea why? I try to do it exactly like the pros do, but it just doesn't work.
  4. Ok, thanks. Would a vile craw be a good choice, or would something else be better?
  5. I'm fishing a new pond today, (very small) and the whole shoreline is covered in weeds, trees, etc. (a lot of vertical weed cover in the water by the shorelines in some places) How should I fish this type of cover? Would a texas rig be a good choice? Also, should I flip and pitch, or cast?
  6. Thanks for the help. I've never caught one that had been previously eye-hooked, but I've eye-hooked 2 of them. Unfortunate, but it's good to know that they can still survive.
  7. So recently I caught a pretty good sized bass, (the one in my profile picture) but it was hooked about a half-inch below the eye with a 2/0 round bend worm hook, and the eye looked pretty weird. (kind of red or something - a lot different from the other normal looking one) Does anybody know if it can survive like that? It was at least 4 pounds so I'd hate to see it starve or something...

Ok, thanks. Do they tend to swallow the whopper plopper like a frog, or is it usually in the lip?

What's your go to topwater in the spring? I've fished a lot of frogs, prop baits, etc. and never caught anything on one. I'm considering buying a whopper plopper, but I've noticed that frogs get taken pretty deep a lot of the time and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get those two trebles on the whopper plopper out if that happened with it. What's your opinion on that? Edit: Does anyone know how to move a topic to a different forum? I just realized this is more of a fishing tackle forum topic, but I'm not sure how to move it to there.
  10. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely check it out. And I meant hung up on grass/leaves/weeds/etc. I've never had to break one off.
  11. Those look pretty nice. How do you usually rig swimbaits like that? I bought a chatterbait the other day and literally watched a bass swim up behind it and bite it on my first day with it. Missed him on the hookset though.
  12. I decided to try out lipless crankbaits recently so I bought the strike king red eye shad. (2-tap version) On my first cast I caught a 2 - 3 pound bass. They seem to work really well in my pond, but I hate fishing them because I have to just burn them as fast as I can to keep them from getting snagged on the bottom. Does anybody have any recommendations for a shallow water lipless? I've been looking at the Rat-l-trap, but I don't know if it would have the same problem or not.
  13. Well, I guess I answered my own question. I caught my PB today on a black/blue lizard.
  14. Thanks for the tips! Also, would a six inch zoom lizard in black/blue tail be a good choice?
  15. Where I live it's cloudy and about 55 - 65 degrees for the high most days. (65 today) What kind of lure would be best for these conditions? (I fish a small pond with pretty murky water) I just haven't had much luck recently using spinnerbaits, texas rigs, etc.
  16. Just fly a helicopter in. (just kidding) I would invest in some waders or hunting boots.
  17. Ok, I tried monofilament yesterday but I couldn't stand it after getting used to the sensitivity of braid. Would flourocarbon be a good choice?
  18. A golf course pond. My uncle fishes on one and catches about 10 per hour on average.
  19. Try loosening the tension spool on your reel. That really helped me when I was first starting. Also, try pulling on the bait until the rod bends a little before releasing it. You can get better power and distance by doing that.
  20. Wow. Never seen anything like that. That looks like a big one too.
  21. Thanks for all these replies. I don't have time to answer every comment on this topic, but I appreciate all of them. You guys have been really helpful.
  22. Rocks, wood, grass, etc. I was fishing it near the bottom so I probably did hit some cover a few times, but for the most part the strikes felt like something was actually trying to yank the bait away, not like the bait was just hitting a twig and stopping or something. There aren't any gar where I fish, but there are bluegill, crappie, and catfish. It's possible that it was a bluegill biting at it or something. I was using an Abu Garcia blackmax rod and reel combo, and 30lb PowerPro braid.
  23. I never thought of that. I did change my retrieve speed up a lot, so I doubt that was it, but it definitely could have been the skirt or blades. And I agree with you on trailer hooks, I hate using them. I just trim the skirts on mine and that seems to help. And thanks for those tips! I'll keep them in mind.
